Snake Island
By: Javon Ferguson

Illha da Queimada Grande, also known as Snake Island, is off the coast of Brazil and is uninhabita-
ble by humans and for good reason.

This island is home to the most dangerous and venomous snake, the Golden Lancehead. This
snake is known to grow anywhere from 26 - 46 inches long.

Its diet consists mostly of birds using the island as a migration point. However, the snake is
known to eat other reptiles and is even known to cannibalize on other snakes. Fortunately this
snake only lives on this one island and nowhere else in the world.

Its venomous bite can melt through human skin. This snake is responsible for 90 percent of Bra-
zilian snakebite related deaths. For this reason, the Brazilian Navy has forbidden anyone from
landing on the island.

Scientists say there are between one and five snakes per square meter. In the last 15 years the
population of the Golden Lancehead has decreased by 15 percent due to vegetation removal and
disease.

Interestingly, this is the only snake on the island; no other species of snake live on this island.
Apparently, this snake is so fierce it is believed to have scared off every other snake from the
island.

It is not recommended to go visit this island.

Dont bark to conclusions
By Unique Mattison

Pit Bulls make up 6.6 percent of the total dog population and made up 91 percent of total record-
ed deaths from canine attacks in 2016.

This is the same combination of 76 percent of all fatal attacks during the 10-year period of 2005-
2015. Through that time period the Pit Bull killed 232 Americans; that's one citizen every 17 days.
From the annual data from DogsBite.org, in 2015 41 percent of all family victims were from the
ages of nine years old and younger, while 59 percent were adults ages 22 and older.

This percentage is because children are more frightened to approach a large dog that is barking at
them and lunging toward them. An adult is more experienced and does not fear a dog like a child
will and when an adult doesn't respond to its warnings it gets territorial and snaps at the adult, as
opposed to a small child who will run to mom and make her hold them.

MercuryNews.com says that Pit Bull bites were on the rise over Christmas and New Years. This is
because people want their families to be present for the holidays and crowd around in their
house, which is a difficult situation for a Pit Bull. Since Pit Bulls are very cautious and territorial,
they don't like to be in a place full of unknown people or children.

Since children like dogs that seem friendly, theyre unsure of the signs to back off and not touch
when a dog gives the signal. Only the dog owner knows the tell-tale signs of when their dog is
scared or overwhelmed, says St. Gregory, a spokeswoman for the city of San Joses Animal Care
Center on Monterey Road. Kids and adults should always stay aware of a Pit Bull, whether or not
the owner tells them it's nice and friendly.

Dylann Roof faces the death penalty for committing a hate crime.

On January 11, 2017, a jury found Roof, 23, guilty of all 33 charges pending against him. He was
found guilty of the 2015 Charleston Church Massacre, leaving a total of nine dead and one non-
fatal injury. Once apprehended, Roof confessed to committing the shooting under the motive
that it would ignite a race war against African Americans.

The Mother Emanuel Church is one of the oldest churches in the U.S., and especially know for its
community organization in the Civil Right Movement. After his testimony, it is clear under the
motives that this was indeed a hate crime meant to deliver a cold strike against the black com-
munity.

During phases of the trial, Roof dismissed his attorneys and insisted to represent himself in court.
In statements, he acknowledged, with confessions, that he was not psychologically motivated to
proceed with his attack.

During his trial prosecutors presented a two-paged piece of evidence from his journal during his
time in incarceration stating the following, I would like to make it crystal clear, I do not regret
what I did. I am not sorry. I have not shed a tear for the innocent people I killed."

Roof was finally sentenced to death after 12 jurors unanimously came to the death penalty deci-
sion after around two hours.

Wrestling has ALWAYS been cool

By Dawon Smith

Wrestling is a very tough and rough sport. Its origin comes from the Sumerians, about 5000 years ago. To the Greeks wrestling was
science and art. Back in their time wrestlers wrestled naked with olive oil and sand on their body to protect their skin from sunlight and
during winter while it was cold. The wrestling was similar to the modern freestyle wrestling.

Professional wrestling started in France around 1830. France influenced many other countries to begin a new type of wrestling called
Greco-Roman wrestling.

Meadowdale has a wrestling program in the school. The head coach, Mr. Fails Jr., and assistant coach, Mr. U, who has been coaching for
49 years, coach the team of 11 wrestlers. The team has wrestled a total of ten meets this year. The goal of the coaches for the wrestlers
is simply to win some matches, have fun, to win city title and someday make it to state. As a team, they would like them to win the city
title.

In Mr. Us eyes, he sees Dennis Locklin as the best wrestler on the team. He believes this is because he has more experience than most
of the wrestlers and believes he has a chance to make it to state. Mr. U believes many kids do not come out for the wrestling team,
Because they dont want to wear the uniform, dont want to touch other boys, and last of all, its a lot of time and effort.

When asked if wrestling is a difficult sport, Mr. U responded, It is because its very easy to quit after you have lost because its a sport
not having to do with a team.
Teen hearing loss
By Noelle Freeman

Do your parents constantly tell you to turn down your music, remove your headphones, or do you have the feeling that you cant hear
as well? If so, please read.

Today studies show that 1 in 5 teens has some form of hearing loss. This rate has increased 30 percent since the 1980s and 1990s. Many
experts believe that this is partially due to increased headphone use. Dr. James E. Foy, DO, an osteopathic pediatrician from Vallejo,
California, explains what to do to minimize hearing loss.

Listening through headphones at a high volume for extended periods of time can result in lifelong hearing loss for children and teens,
says Dr. Foy. Even a mild hearing loss due to excessive noise could lead to developmental delays in speech and language. I stress to my
patients and the parents of my patients that if you cant hear anything going on around you when listening to headphones, the decibel
is too high.

Dr. Foy warns that most MP3 players today can produce sounds up to 129 decibels, equivalent to a sound level at a rock concert. At that
level, hearing loss can happen after only about an hour and 15 minutes. He advises that people should not exceed the maximum volume
of 60 percent when listening on headphones.

Signs of hearing loss are:

Ringing, roaring, hissing, or buzzing in the ear

Difficulty understanding speech in noisy places or places with poor acoustics

Muffled sounds and a feeling that your ear is plugged

Listening to the tv or radio at a higher volume than in the past.

Tricks to try to protect your hearing when listening to music are:

Wear earmuff- style headphones. Your best bet is noise- cancelling headphones, which reduce or eliminate background noise.
This lessens the need to turn up the volume above 50 percent. You can listen to music at a softer volume, for a long time.

Follow the 60/60 rule when wearing earbuds. Keep your volume below 60 percent, and limit your listening to under your listening
to under 60 minutes per day.

Buy the newer ear buds that offer a tighter fit to block out more background noise, allowing you to whisper at a lower volume.

Invest in custom made according to an impression taken of your ear canal. These block out the most noise, letting you listen at
the very low levels. They also provide the best sound quality.

Educate children and teenagers. Most have no idea that hearing doesnt come back once its gone.

Ear buds commonly used with iPods or MP3 players usually sit within the ear canal can damage hearing when boosted high than nine
decibels.
Black is beautiful
By Precious Brown

The history of our unique appearance and structure is black hair and beauty. Our hair texture is different and beautiful, often hard to
manage at times. African-American hair is fragile and prone to injury and damage. There are many ways to take care of the hair texture.
Various techniques have evolved over time. We braid our hair, we twist our hair, we straighten, perm and lock up our hair.

Sources have said that blacks have embraced hairstyles and beauty methods that reflect popular European standards of beau-
ty. Around 1441, when slaves were brought over, they were stripped of their only identification, which was their hair. They were only
allowed to have fair skin, straight hair and thin features, features of a white person. Other slaves attempted to stay with their traditional
African hair customs, like braiding hair using African patterns and using natural herbs from trees for their hair and skin care.

The hair of blacks is usually coarser in texture, tighter in curl pattern, more naturally delicate, and more vulnerable to damage from
chemical treatments. The hair texture varies between fine, medium, and coarse. It contains cuticles (the outer layer), a cortex (the mid-
dle layer, composed primarily of keratin and moisture, plus melanin, which gives our hair its color), and a medulla (the center of the hair
shaft). These parts are identical to the Caucasian hair; the difference is the wave texture. Generations of hairstyles have reflected the
history of American race relations and the way blacks wore their hair reflected the dominant white culture.

The need for blacks becoming knowledgeable in black hair care began to grow. It was then that the kitchen beauty shops began. There
has been a growing number of black shops everywhere. Beauty salons and barber shops became places not only to get your hair done,
but locations where blacks could talk about their community.

There is a natural hair revolution going on among black women in the U.S.; our hair is what symbolizes us as black women and men. Not
only is it our hair that makes us stand out, it is also our beauty and skin. Black people compelled to smoothing their hair to fit into the
society better and to camouflage almost, says exhibition producer Aaryn Lynch. In the early 2000s you would see black women using
harsh chemicals, sewing in weaves and the use of lots of heat just so that their hair can be easier to manage. And to try to fit in, because
they were told curly hair is not beautiful, they tried their best to change it.

Do we still feel that we should try to match the Caucasian culture or is it by choice that we do so? Do we do whatever's convenient or in
style? What people dont realize is how much maintenance African hair requires. Black is beautiful, and beauty is worldwide in various
colors.

At Meadowdale High School our very own Mr. Williams created a partnership with Maranatha Worship Centre, which is right next to
our high school. This partnership has been in a bond for about eight years and counting.

The centre gives Meadowdale High School OGT tutoring, as well as all sports pre-game meals. They also provide personal care items and
the mens department provides mentoring and character building.

All thanks goes to Mr. Williams for caring about the schools future and how it can improve overall.

On the behalf of the student body, thank you to Maranatha Worship Centre for caring for us and agreeing to help Meadowdales im-

Circus of doom
By Anduryn Gallimore

Circuses are places where families can go to see cool animals that are not native to the area.
They can also see amazing stunts, but circuses may not be what everyone thinks.

For 14 years, the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus faced a lawsuit where they were
accused of abusing their elephants. Back in 2000 a former worker for the circus came forward
with said allegations. But in 2009, it was found that he was paid $190,000 by animal rights
groups. They still kept the case open until 2014, when it was proven to be a wrongful lawsuit.
However, not every circus treats its animals humanely.

In 2002, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, came across the
Saurez Bros. Circus in Puerto Rico. They were brought to the attention of PETA because they had
seven polar bears imported from Canada. The fluffy bears were kept in wire cages with no air
conditioning or a pool to swim in. The average temperature in Puerto Rico year-round is 75 de-
grees Fahrenheit and polar bears are born with very heavy fur and need temperatures below
zero for survival. PETA sued two government companies for allowing the import to happen and
letting the polar bears live in those conditions.

Circuses may look fun, but they may not always be

what they seem.

Bravo Earl Lloyd

By Andrew Caldwell JR

Basketball is a sport that most people like, but its a milestone for African Americans because Earl
Lloyd was the first African American to play in the National Basketball Association.

He was first inducted into the league around the 1950s, segregation was still at large, so he was-
nt welcomed to play. Before coming to the NBA, he went to Parker Gray High School. In 1947, he
attended West Virginia State and played for the Yellow Jackets, which is where he became
known for his tremendous defense for the teams best offensive players. The result of this was
they went to two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conferences and Tournament
Championships in 1948 and 1949, where they fell short of second place. Lloyd was an all-
conference for three years and also was named an All-American. During his senior year, he aver-
aged 14 points and eight rebounds.

Racism was still at large and segregation was still enforced, but in sports, barriers were broken.
African Americans were getting noticed by NBA teams and drafters like Chuck Cooper and Nat
Clifton. Once invited to the draft, he was drafted in the ninth round to the Washington Capitols.

He played his first game on October 31, 1950, against the Rochester Royals. It was a historic
game even though they lost by eight. Lloyd scored six points and this began the acceptance of
African Americans in basketball. In his first season, he only played seven games before going into
the army for two years, but returned in 1952 to play for the Syracuse Nationals. Lloyd was well
known in his season performance in the 1954-55 season when he scored 731 points and led the
Nationals to the Eastern Division Championship. As a result, he was the first African American to
win an NBA title against the Fort Wayne Pistons in a seven game series. This was a bounce back
from the previous year since they lost to the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA Finals.

He averaged about 11 points and eight rebounds per game that year. In 1956, Lloyd was named
player of the decade for the years 1947-1956. Later he became sports leaders of the Detroit
Pistons where he stayed until retirement in 1960 at age 32. In his career, he averaged 8.4 points
and 6.4 rebounds. He was awarded to be apart of the CIAA Silver Anniversary Team and to the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Golden Anniversary Team.

He became the NBAs very first African American assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons, then a
scout, then finally became the head coach in 1971. After a season struggle with a record of 20-
50, he was fired early next season. He settled down to work as an administrator in the Detroit
public school system. Many people compare him to Jackie Robinson, but he says he's not worthy
to be in a category with a legend like Jackie.

In 1993, he was inducted to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Then, he was voted to the CIAAs 50
greatest players and finally inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2002. He even has his own day which
is on Feb. 9, but it was first introduced in 2001. Its only celebrated throughout Virginia. Its called
Earl Lloyd Day.

Grand theft auto

By Erick Dominguez

Many may not think that insurance fraud happens, but it does happen more than people think.

The most popular type of insurance fraud is reporting a stolen car. The reasoning is because
grand theft auto is one of the highest crimes committed with one happening every 42.8 seconds
according to the FBI.

Insurance companies will ask about information such as, Where did you last see your car? After
one passes this scrutiny, they will see how you are doing financially and rule it out for fraud. They
will also send an agent to follow you around to see if you do anything suspicious and check all of
your social media.

Thirty-five percent of insurance companies claim that insurance fraud cost the company 5-10
percent annually and another 31 percent say it cost them 20 percent.

If your car is located and is damaged the insurance company will determine if the car is repaira-
ble or is a total loss. If the car insurance company declares a loss youre paid the actual value of
the car minus the deductible.

If your car is found after your insurance settlement, you will not be able to receive your car un-
less you want to buy it back. This is because you sign the title of your car away to your insurance
company. Depending on the condition, your car will be sold at different events such as auctions
or sold as salvage.

If you are found guilty of a soft claim (policyholders exaggerating otherwise-legitimate claims) it
can be a misdemeanor, fines, jail time up to a year, community service and probation. If you are
found to make a hard fraud (deliberately plans or invents a loss) you can be penalized by incar-
ceration to a state prison.

Broken lives

Jason Robb got gunned down in his ex-wifes driveway while he was waiting to take his two kids to school.

Mercedes Robb was accused of killing her ex-husband. He was gunned down while waiting in his car in the driveway of his ex-wifes home outside
of Lebanon.

The fatally shooting took place on Nov. 3. He leaves behind an infant daughter in addition to the two children he has with his ex-wife. He and his
girlfriend, Amanda Palmgren, celebrated the birth of their daughter ten weeks before the fatal shooting.

On November 3 Palmgren said Robb woke up and rubbed her back as she breast fed their child. Then he went down stairs to have a cup of coffee
before he left to take his children to school. When Palmgren woke up Robb was dead.

His ex-wife had admitted to shooting him because, There was no one better for me out there than him. When the police got there Robb was
unarmed and the car was running. His ex-wife shot him many times before calling 911.
