MARISA SALAS EPPO RESISTANT PANEL 2011
Control recommendations example Conyza - Studies on
C. bonariensis from University of Cordoba
Optimum stage for treatment: Rosette Stage or seedling or flowering (at
higher rates) but not stem extension

Best with low water volume < 200 l/ha

Best results from rosette applications in early
spring
Conyza germinates from autumn to spring
so mix of growth stages is often the case

4TH Workshop the EWRS Working group Herbicide
Resistance Ghent (BE) 12-13th April 2011

Understanding metabolic resistance /target site resistance

Resistance risk analysis during herbicide authorization EU-wide

challenges and actions taken in Germany

zRMS will be responsible for the analysis of resistance risk on behalf of all MS
within the respective zone

Resistance management strategies highly dependent on local conditions

Expert Committees on Pesticide Resistance should be established on regional

level
Expert Committee will be able to provide relevant information and support to
the respective RMS in order to facilitate an appropriate resistance risk
analysis of herbicides.

Resistance Ghent (BE) 12-13th April 2011

Herbicide resistance management

How successful has this been in your country?

Is their a good balance between pure and applied herbicide

resistance research?

How is herbicide-resistance management advice relayed to

farmers?

What improvements could be made?

Ring test ALOMY. Formal publication planned.

APESV monitoring project (Gerhards)

Total of 265 populations collected 2007-2009 (suspected resistance). 2/3 with
confirmed resistance. 1/3 with proven ALS target site resistance.
Key factors identified to promote resistance: only winter crops in rotation (by far
the most important factor), early seeding, high grass population, tillage.
PCR: 69 populations with a mutation at the position 197 -> Thr: 2 pop. with
Pro197 -> Asn. New mutation with confirmed target site resistance: Arg377 ->
His.
Status grass weeds Germany (Petersen)
80% of ALOMY samples with ACCase resistance. About 20% + DIM (ACCase
target site) and + Atlantis.
Few Lolium pops resistant to Axial (pinoxadem), to Atlantis, to Husar, to
Broadway (pyrsxulam+florasulam).
No findings in AVEFA
APESV: about 40% with ALS resistance (from > 200 samples); first cases
against pinoxaden. Different resistant profiles: cross-resistance between SU
triazolpyrimidine Accase (pinoxaden).

Clearfield: consequences for resistance management (Schnhammer)

In order to use the advantages of imazamox in OSR, the use of ALS-inhibitors in cereals needs to be
adapted. This will be implied anyway then, when volunteer OSR needs to be controlled with non-ALS
chemistry in other crops.

Clearfield: activity of SUs against volunteer Clearfield OSR (Petersen)

Reduced activity of sulfonylureas
Significant differences on activity between ALS-inhibitors: Florasulam quite good, flupyrsulfuron,
tribenunron, tritosulfuron, propoxycarbazone, metsulfuron medium; iodosulfuron, thifensulfuron
almost no activity.
Cereal field: Quite good control with DFF or Picolinafen combinations in autumn or phenoxies in
spring,
Sugar beets field: full control with standard (Goltix+Betanal+Ethofumesate) + Debut + Venzar.

Clearfield Technology (Wolber)

Main advantage: control of crucifers without clomazone
Main disadvantage: control of volunteer OSR, seed dispersal into neighbouring/other fields
Higher cost to control volunteers
Not yet clear if and what impact on resistance selection will be exerted
Need for field tests to control volunteers: are non-ALS solutions good enough to control the
other weeds?

Conclusions CPRH 2011 Madrid

a) Methodology to produce the susceptibility baseline for Lolium to Glyphosate

was set up.

b) It was agreed to send to the Minister of Agriculture the following paragraph

that will be included in the label of herbicides base on glyphosate:
Biotypes of the weed species Conyza and Lolium have been
identified as resistant to the recommended doses of
Glyphopsate. The fields where those weed biotypes will be
present should be managed by using authorized herbicides with
different MOA and by including agronomical practices

c) The CPRH will published a bulleting for Lolium and Conyza resistant weeds
to Glyphosate with the recommendations and management practices to
control them. Special attention will be done in relation to the application
time of the recommended practices.

Herbicide Resistance
3rd NORBARAG meeting
Ski, Norway November 17th 2010
Action Groups

a) Results from a study of ACC-tolerance in

Nordic/Baltic wild oat populations was presented. None
of the populations turned out to be resistant
b) presented a protocol for performing a ring test with
ALOMY during next year. Four countries has accepted
to participate.
c) Compilation of a resistance list for the Nordic/Baltic
region was discussed. We agreed to start with an
internal list and discuss the results on the next meeting.

Brief country reports on resistance 2010

a) Finland ALS- resistance in STEME. A questioner to farmers showed there were no problems with
herbicide resistance.
b) Denmark STEME and PAPRH are main resistant weeds. Increasing number of cases of ALOMY have
been recorded.
c) Sweden ALOMY are the most common resistant species. Investigations on integrated black grass
control, including mechanical and chemical control, autumn v.s. spring, seed rates drilling date
(including stale seedbed), soil cultivation and crop rotation.
d) Lithuania only APESV was reported being a problem.
e) Norway resistance in STEME. A twin pack of tribenuron and mecoprop have been approved for the next
season. 12

Herbicide
Resistance
AFPP Commission : herbicides resistance France Action
Three working groups identified:
G1 : Current status of weed resistance in France Groups
G2 : resistance methodology
G3 : Communication to farmers

Group 3 objective: to make aware farmers, distributors, adviser, etc. About the issues
related to the occurrence of resistant populations to the herbicides. The group will be
responsible to:
Collect and summarize the information available.
Produce bulletins, boards, as support documents
Communicate the information

Resistant evaluation scheme/grid

The resistance evaluation scheme was produced on 2010 and communicate on
several technical Herbicide Meetings and weed control Conferences
The group want to complete and modify the scheme to get it adapted to 2 different
type of audiences (farmers and technical advisor)

Produce a document about the recommendation to prevent the development of

resistance to herbicides, with concrete examples for the regions cases with an economic
evaluation of the resistance cost. 13
