that postal services may become much
less impostant someday
junk mail: advertisements
By 1998, less than five years after
it came into general use, it had be-
come an integral part of life as we
know it. As soon as it was discov-
ered by the public, it grew by leaps
and bounds. Today we can't even
imagine life without it, We depend
on it for information, communica~
tion, our shopping needs, and in-
creasingly, for our entertainment as
well
It is the first communication tool
ever invented by man that has the
power to create a common global
culture with a common language,
yet it is still_in its infancy, Of
course, we're talking about the
Internet
EMAIL (electronic mail). The
most common use of the Internet is
for electronic communication, com-
monly known as email. it’s hard to
find anyone who doesn’t have an
email address. Even children have
them. People who don’t have email
addresses are considered to be odd
and somewhat out of touch with
what is happening in society today
Email commu tion has become
so pervasive in society that the fu-
ture of the postal service is in ques:
tion, The volume of letters sent
through the mail is steadily de-
creasing. According to the postal
service, about 70% of the mail now
being carried is junk mailTae INTERNET
STOREHOUSE OF INFORMA-
TION. Most people who are con-
nected to the Internet use it to find
information in the form of news,
stock quotes, weather information,
travel information, or any other type
of information anyone can think of.
The Internet has actually replaced
the public library for most people.
Many people who still do visit public
libraries go there to use the comput-
ers to connect to the Internet.
ECOMMERCE. The most rapidly
growing part of the Internet today is
ecommerce, or electronic shopping.
‘As more and more people lose their
fear of making credit card purchases
over the Internet, online shopping is
becoming one of the most popular
ways to shop. All you need to shop
online is a valid credit card and the
willingness to search for what you
want. Prices are usually lower than
what can be found in retail stores, the
selections are wider, and delivery is
quick. There is almost no limit to
what a person can buy through the
Internet.
E-ENTERTAINMENT. Faster con-
nection speeds and file-sharing tech:
nology now make it possible to
download music, video, and com-
puter software for free. This has cre-
ated big problems for the record,
movie, and software industries, since
people no longer have to pay big
bucks to buy CDs of their favorite re-
cording artists or to see the latest
movies. Even software is free.
THE FUTURE. All that’s certain
about the Internet is that it will
change in ways we cannot even
imagine today and that it, or some-
thing even better, will be around for
as far into the future as we can
dream. A marriage of TV, radio,
movies—all_of mass_media~and_the
Internet is already underway.
Storchouse ...information: There is almost no information
that cannot be found on the Internet.
shop online: buy things on the Internet
selections ...wider: more products to choose from
f
ter speeds: such as ISDN, ADSL, VDS
L or cable
file-sharing technology: computers can connect directly
with one another and exchange files
big bucks: a lot of money

A..underway: All of these media are being combined
with the Internet.
