Tools Needed:
Drill
Drill Bits 1/8 and
1 Needle Nose Pliers
Screw driver to slide thru the eye of the eye bolt to help screw it in
4 level (optional, but preferred)

Instructions:

Find an area in your basement where you have an opening large enough to work, ideally, at least a 5 x 5 area. Look
up and check the floor joists above you. Which way are they running? They should run 16 on center so find 3 that are
running perpendicular to the face (48 or long dimension) of the plant shelf and drill two hole thru each of the two
outer joists, 20 apart and about 1 up into the joist. Make sure these 4 holes make a true rectangle as that will help
keep the shelves and chains aligned nicely in the end. Screw an eye bolt thru each of the holes in the joists. A screw
driver can help by inserting the metal part thru the eye and grabbing each end; turn. Screw on the nut and tighten.
Insert a 1- 5/8 S hook thru the eye of the eye bolt and attach a 10 length of chain hanging down from the S hook. (You
will trim the chain at ground level later). See Picture 1.

Find the center point in the top wall plate between the holes in floor joists you just drilled, which should be around 24
from each hole as measured towards the center of the eventual shelving unit. (This will hold a support chain that runs
behind the shelving unit and is approximately 8 off the ground). Drill a hole and screw the hook into the center hole
drilled in the top plate. See Picture #2. The chain that hangs from this screw will be assembled from trimmed chain
pieces later.

Take your metal conduit or PVC and make sure it is cut into 2 @ 19-1/2 pieces. Drill a 1/8 hole about a from each
end of each piece of the conduit/PVC. These holes need to be in the same orientation to each other. You will be putting
a 1-5/8 S hook thru these. So make sure your drill bit is larger than the diameter of the S hook you are using. Next you
will need to drill two more holes into the conduit/PVC using the same drill bit. These should be placed 5-1/2 from each
end approximately 60 rotation from the previous holes you drilled. These holes should face in toward the shelving
when assembled and will hold the chains to hang the light fixtures. See Picture #3. Attach the metal conduit/PVC to the
chains using the 1-5/8 S hooks through the holes at the ends of the conduit. Hang the conduit approximately 18 above
where you would like the shelf to hang. Merely slip one side of the S hook thru the hole in the conduit/PVC and the
other side thru each of the 4 chains that are hanging down from the ceiling. If you have a 4 level check for levelness of
the four S hooks. The S hooks you buy may need to be slightly crimped for stability. Use the needle nose pliers to
accomplish this.

Now attach your shelf. Using four 1 S hooks insert one end into each of the four chains equa-distance vertically from
the floor, and then the other side of the S hook onto the corner of the shelving. You havent put a chain yet onto the
back center hook, so trim the excess chain off the four corners above floor level and combine (using small S hooks) what
you cut to make a length of chain long enough to hang from the center hook to the shelf. You may want to do this
before you attach the two front hooks onto the shelf. You wont have to reach so far. See picture 4 for how the S hook
attaches to the shelf.

Pic #5 Attaching the chains to the light fixtures. (Dont pay attention to the cable ties; not needed)

Now you just need to add the lights! Put one low spectrum bulb and one high spectrum bulb into each of the light
fixtures. Set them light side down on the shelving. Cut 4 pieces of chain 14 long. Put a S hook on each end of each
chain. One by one, put one S hook into the hole you made in the metal conduit/PVC and the other S hook into hole/slot
of the light housing/fixture. Now set the light fixtures at the height you need for what you are growing by merely
shortening the chain that goes thru the S hook. Make sure they are level. Plug them in!! A timer is beneficial to ensure
your seedlings are getting 16 hours of light.

If you have dry wall behind your shelving you may want to put plastic behind your unit to protect the drywall. Staple or
use push pins to attach the plastic. You can easily add more shelves/light fixtures if your interest grows.

And dont worry about deviating. There are many ways to construct a growing environment.
