Introduction
!1
This personal project has been something that I have been looking forward to since I heard
about it from my seniors in Grade 8. This task will provide me complete freedom to create and
something that I am passionate about in the best way possible.
My project product is to create a short film that helps create awareness about depression and
possible solutions to address the issue. I have always been fascinated by the idea on how a movie is
able to make a difference in a persons day, their personality or even their mindset. For example, if
you are having a bad day and then coincidentally, your friend is playing a comedy movie, such as
Dumb and Dumber, you will most probably end up laughing to the hilarious acts of Jim Carrey and
Jeff Daniels, which will eventually brighten up your mood and day. Besides that, I like how certain
messages can be conveyed via a movie in an effective way. A good example will be the Pursuit of
Happiness, where the final message is that no matter how hard life gets, you must not give up and
you must keeping fighting your way back up. Films educate us. They are the mirrors of the society.
They inspire us. People tend to relate the incidents on reel life with their real life. Hence this fact
could be exploited for peoples self- realization. Films form an effective audio visual medium of
communication, and it is a general finding that audio-visual modes of communication have deep
and profound impact on human beings. They enable us to address serious issues [like depression] in
a light hearted yet compelling way. Addressing to the issue of depression, a good short film can be
helpful for a person suffering from depression. Watching a good movie will help in bringing out the
angst, sorrow, disappointment, pain, loneliness and other emotions that a depressed person is
feeling within him, which otherwise he would not have been able to release and express to the
society. It addresses the root cause of depression. The movies give a glimpse of the undying zest
and zeal for life. They induce hope in a person. The movies depict the real life accounts of people
who emerged victorious by overcoming all their hardships and struggles. I wanted to explore this
medium which can make a massive impact on the society; a medium which could inculcate a
positive outlook towards life. So, this was the motivation / driving force behind choosing SHORT
FILM as my final product. It is my way to give back / help to the society in which I live.
The reason I chose Depression as the topic of my short film is because I have realized that
many people around me are suffering from depression. A good example will be my grandmother.
My grandmother has been suffering from depression ever since my late grandfather passed away.
Besides that, I know few friends of mine who are suffering from depression because of events that
has taken place in their lives. Hence, I feel that this topic would be a good option as it would benefit
!2
the people around me as well. I also dont want any of my friends or loved ones to go through this
problem and to those whom are suffering, I would like to bring some changes in their lives.
According to a fact sheet by World Health Organisation (2012), Depression is a common
mental disorder. Globally, more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. The
figure and information shows us that depression is a growing problem which involves all age
groups. It is not a surprise to know that the number has and is still increasing as days pass by. My
personal project focuses on a persons belief, a persons relationship with their friends and family, a
persons personal, physical, social, spiritual and mental health. Besides that, my personal project is
about a persons identity and what it means to be human. Hence, I have chosen Identities and
Relationship as my global context.
I hope that, via my personal project, people will gain some understanding on what
depression is and what they can do to avoid it. The reason why I want my targeted audience to be
within age group 8-18 is because I believe that if a person is educated from a very young age, then
it would be possible for the person to successfully tackle the issue. This short film, hopefully, will
be able to make a difference in ones life. Most people who are suffering from depression often feel
hopeless, useless and have given up in life. However, via this short film, I hope that I will be able
to give them some hope and make them feel worthy of themselves. This is why Identities and
Relationship is the most suitable global context for my personal project.
Goal
My main goal is to make a short film, creating awareness about depression. In the end, I
would like to see a short film that has been done in a professional manner. I hope that this small
step would hopefully make a difference in peoples lives. With a wide scope of access to a film
courtesy diversified mass media, I hope that my short film will be able to reach huge number of
people and help them resolve the issue of depression.
Subject Specific
The subjects that I have chosen specifically for my personal project are ICT [Information &
Communication Technology] and Science. To be more specific: ICT - film making, and Science -
psychology. The reason I chose these 2 subjects is because my short film requires me to have proper
knowledge on the whole film-making process and film-making is an evolving technology. Hence,
ICT is the most appropriate subject which is related to my personal project. Secondly, I can relate
!3
the research and study about depression as a Science. Psychology is the field dealing with
processing and analyzing human behavioral patterns and human mind, and coming out with some
inferences which will help understand and resolve the issue. Arguably, psychology is a branch of
science and studying the causes and effects of depression is a part of psychological study. This
justifies why I chose science as the second subject.
!4
Investigation
!5
For me to further understand my topic, I have decided to use the Big 6 models to explore my
curiosity in an organized manner. I have created 2 models, as my research will be divided into 2
parts. The first part will be for film-making process and the second part will be for depression. Each
part will be further subdivided into primary and secondary research. (Refer to Appendix 19).
Evaluation of Sources
I started my research by finding out about depression first so that I could proceed further
writing the script for short film. The knowledge that I gain from the research will allow me as a
film-maker to direct my actors to emote the right feelings, to set the right locations/setting, the way
I can grade my short film, etc. The knowledge will help me depict the depressed feeling implicitly
and explicitly onscreen. As a film-maker, it is important for me to understand the theme of
depression. (Refer to Appendix 17)
!8
Before I could start filming my short film, I have intended to use the information that I have
gathered to create an organized, detailed and specific plan. After the plan has been created, I will be
able to make my short film without procrastination. Hence, I have decided to create a S.M.A.R.T
Goal, Design Specification, Product Specification and Product Criteria. I will be able to create the
final product in a very good way, provided I follow the plan above. It is during the planning phase
that I start brainstorming sessions for plotting the storyline as well.
Smart Goal
In order to fully achieve success with my goals in Personal Project, I must be certain of
what I would want to achieve and have the goals in a organized format. Hence, I have created a
S.M.A.R.T. goal to help me understand, justify and clarify my goals. My specific goal is to shoot
and produce a short film and the total time frame for me to complete the product successfully will
be 2 months. Also, doing the S.M.A.R.T goals has really helped me to specify how realistic my
goals can be. This is so because I have to reflect on whether my goal is specific, measurable, how
relevant is it and can I achieve my goal within the time bound given. (Refer to Appendix 3)
Design Specification
In order to make sure that my product is unique and is able to serve its purpose, I have
created a design specification. This will help to compile and enlist the products basic requirements
and a general idea on how will the final product be made. Also, it will help me understand how will
it serve its purpose. (Refer to Appendix 4)
Product Specification
My final product is going to be a short film. Hence, before creating my product, I need an
idea of how the product is going to look like. Therefore, I will need the product specification. Also,
the product specification will tell me what the product will need. (Refer to Appendix 5
Product Criteria
The product criteria will be what I will be referring to while I am doing my product. I
believe that this will guide me to create a very good and efficient product. It will also help me
evaluate my product in terms of context, organization and presentation. (Refer to Appendix 6)
!9
Story Board and Scripts
To create my final product, which is the short film, I will need to create a complete script
and a complete story board. The reason is because this will serve as the basis for my short film
hence it is very important. However, to write a good script, motivation is essential and because of
that, I will be travelling to a few places to get ideas and to be inspired. To convey my thoughts
through a short film, it has to be detailed and has to have a good storyline & script. After creating
the script, I will have to create a storyboard. The storyboard will help me visualize what my final
work will be. It is important for me to visualize my final product as it will help forecast all
necessary frames, type of shots etc. The storyboard will be of great help in terms of visualizing how
the final outcome will be. I have written 2 scripts in total. The first story is titled Pasta With Red
Sauce and the second story is titled 125 Days. I will briefly explain and summarize the 2 stories
below.
After successfully writing these 2 scripts, I will have to choose on one final script as it is
impossible to shoot 2 short films at once. Hence, I have decided to choose the second script [125
hours]. I have decided to go with this script as I felt that storyline is much better and is very much
relevant to the theme, which is depression. Also, I believe that in terms of the actual shoot, it would
be much easier. The reason is because I would need to get extra actors for the first story. Hence, it
!10
would be easier if I shoot the story based on the second script. Due to this decision, I have decided
to create a story board based on this script. (Refer to Appendix 9)
Timeline
I have created a specific timeline to be on track in terms of set deadline. Also, I will be
having weekly meetings with my supervisor. This will serve as a guideline for me to follow and my
supervisor can be in track with my work as well. This will help me organize my time and work
simultaneously. Also, I have decided to complete my product a few days earlier. The reason is
because I believe that if I finish shooting the film before the final deadline, I will be able to make
some changes based on opinions from my friends and my own reflection about the product. Hence,
the changes and modifications that I am able to make will help me improve my final product. (Refer
to Appendix 10)
!11
Taking Action
!12
After creating the detailed plan in my plan stage, storyboards, the expansion of my scripts
and the timeline which were mentioned earlier, I have managed to completely shoot and produce
my short film. This has helped me to efficiently keep the production of my short film on track and
also keep account of the characters, motive and other important details. The next stage in PP is
implementing the plan into action. The implementation should be time bound. The success of the
project depends on how efficiently one manages the sources and puts the proposed plan into action
within the given time frame, with the right product output. As mentioned earlier, in the planning
stage I was ready with the i) storyboard ii) technical requirements and specifications and iii) a set
timeline for my project. The resulting outcome is that I am ready with my product within the set
deadline. All the filming of scenes, compilation followed by editing has been done.
Finalization of Product
Before I finalized my product, I questioned myself to 3 vital questions; Do I have passion
for the product and the problem that I am tackling?, Does it allow me to express my creativity? and
Have I done it before?
In order for me to accomplish my goal for my personal project, self-motivation is very
important. I believe that if I am self-motivated, I will be able to focus on what I need to do and will
give my best in doing it. The journey that I went through making the product was a challenging one
as I have to fulfill other commitments simultaneously. However, as film-making is my passion, I
have overcome all challenges and was able to express my creativity and passion. During this stage,
I have been much more organized than I previously was. This is so as I wanted to give a work of
good quality in the short period of time. So, I collaborated well with other crew members and
properly managed time with the work I had.
Process of Project
Pre-Production
Before going on shooting the film, as mentioned earlier, I will have to plan how will the
complete production and how will the outcome be. The first thing that I will have to do is to
come up with a complete script. However, it isnt that simple as I have no idea on a story.
So, I decided to travel around Johor Bahru and Singapore. Why? This is so because going to
new places will help me to be inspired and open up my mind. After going to many places for
around 2 weeks, I have come up with 2 ideas. The first idea got inspired when I saw a
!13
couple arguing in an Italian restaurant. I got inspired for the second idea when I was
standing on the edge at a roof on top of a very tall building. However, I will be producing
only one short film. Hence, I will have to choose one script and produce it into a short film.
However, to help me decide, I compared the script to set criterion. After comparing, chose
the second script to be produced in the short film. The reason is because the second script
had more content that was more relevant to depression compared to the first script and I
could relate to the second script more. After producing the script, I created a storyboard. I
created a final storyboard which consisted of the 6 sketches to represent the 6 main scenes in
the short film. This storyboard will be used to visualise the final work. (Refer to Appendix
9)
Production
At this stage, I shot all the scenes. However, it is impossible to shoot within one day. So, I
decided to finish the shooting within 3 days. So on the first day, I have decided to shoot in
various town locations. These scenes were used to build the characters premise of a sad and
depressed person. Also, it is to show the strong bond between the 2 friends. After this, we
were supposed to shoot at my friends condominium. The scene that will be shot there will
be the one where were the protagonists friend commits suicide, the most important scene in
the whole short film. However, it started raining very heavily. So, we couldnt shoot
anymore on that day. Then, on the second day, we shot the scenes in the graveyard, at home
and a restaurant. The grave yard scene is another important scene in the short film. It serves
as the backbone of the whole short film. The scene at home is for the ending. Finally, the
scene at the restaurant will be used for fillers. Then, its a wrap for the second day. On the
third day, we shot the scenes in the condominium. After shooting this scene, I have
completed shooting the whole short film. (Refer to Appendix 11)
Another major setback was that I couldnt record every scene that I needed to. For
example, I couldnt record the scenes in the bedroom and bathroom. This is because the
location for shoot was not vacant; hence I decided to change the storyline a bit. I will
explain the changes and details of the final shooting below. (Refer to Appendix 12)
!14
Post - Production
In my opinion, this is the toughest part of the creative stage. It is so because it requires a lot
of editing. Editing requires me to be very accurate and detailed. Also, it requires great focus
to edit the parts (Refer to Appendix 13). The toughest part will be to grade the shots to be
more cinematic. The grading has to be the same for all the scenes. If it is not the same, the
short film will look very inconsistent which will eventually look bad. Besides that, to make
the short film good, the background music has to be relevant and royalty free (Refer to
Appendix 14). Hence, I have decided to search the web for royalty free music and use it for
my short film. For all spoken dialogues I will re-record it via professional microphones in a
proper recording booth. (Refer to Appendix 15). The re-recording will be done to ensure
clarity in the voice.
Product Amendments
I have got a lot of amendments for my product. The reason is because my cameraman
accidentally lost my recorded files. The actual reason is that while transferring the videos to his
laptop, his laptop crashed, and he had no back-up. Due to this, I had to come up with a whole new
storyline. I decided to do this instead of re-recording the whole thing because I didnt have enough
time to do so. Hence, I decided to use the footage that I had and improvised it. Luckily, the main
part of the video was still safe, which is the part where I would be narrating / reading out the letter.
Hence, I made that my ending. I, then, shot a few extra short scenes to make the improvised idea
better. However, even though it is different, the video has managed to demonstrate the effects of
depression and eventually helping me into achieving my ultimate aim which is to create awareness
about depression.
!15
Reflection
!16
Reflection of product
In my plan stage, I had created product criteria, design specification, product specification
and S.M.A.R.T. Goals as the basis for the creation of my product. Hence, I believe that it would be
apt to evaluate the success of my product by comparing my product with the 6 mediums that I have
used in the plan stage. However, to really understand how good my product is, I will have to ask my
audience how good is the short film and does it make an impact and other important questions.
Hence, I decided to ask my audience their opinion. So, I decided to do an interview (Refer to
Appendix 16) to find out what people actually think about my video. This allowed me to know and
understand how much of an impact my short film could make. Also, this allowed me to interact
with my audience.
In summary, I believe that the product has showcased the effects that depression has on the
people surrounding the victim. The flow of the story shows how the death of his best friend has
affected him. The letter has showed the greater effect and it is the vital aspect of the short film
which shows what a depressed person is going through.
Self Evaluation
In the whole process of creating the product, I believe that time was very insufficient,
however with the help of my friends, I managed to create a short film which serves its purpose. I
did make a timeline for the whole creation of the product. However, I was not able to follow it due
to some unexpected events. I feel that to know the quality of my work, I will have to compare it
with my product criteria. I will insert the table below.
!17
Question Justification
For my S.M.A.R.T goals, I believe that I was
successful except for the part where I state that I will
successfully produce my short film. It took a much
longer time period to shoot and produce the money.
The reason is because there were a lot of things on my
S.M.A.R.T Goal
shoulder. However, I learned to be more balanced and
ended up completely producing the movie by the 14th
of February. On the bright side, I am glad that I have
managed to maintain the relevance of the global
context to the short film.
For my design specification, I believe that I have
produced the short film in a way where I have
maintain relevance to all the questions that I have
answered in my design specification while in planning
Design Specification stage. I can safely say that I have my design
specification a 100% as my product reflects that. Also,
I have kept my design spec in my mind while shooting
and producing my product as my design spec sort of
summarizes my technical aspects.
!18
Question Justification
I can say for sure that I have used and applied all the
technical aspects, props, etc. The biggest proof will be
that if you were to watch my short film, everything
that I will be there. The main reason would be while
doing my product specification, I was thinking of
shooting, the scenes, and the final product, and I wrote
Product Specification
each and everything in my product specification.
Hence, I can safely say that it covers my short film
from the beginning to the end. Also, I wanted to be a
100% prepared while shooting, hence planning
everything I need in product specification is very
essential.
My product criteria is one of the most important ways
for me to understand and know the value of my short
film. I referred to this after completely shooting and
Product Criteria
producing my short film and I can safely say that I can
give myself a ________ because -____________
(Refer to Appendix 6)
For my final product, I have used second script to
shoot and produce my work with. After, I created my
storyboard based on my script. The script has become
Scripts and Storyboard
the backbone for the production of my short film
while the storyboard has helped me to visualize the
short film in advance.
Timeline has helped me to plan my time in advance.
However, due to some unstoppable issues, I couldnt
Timeline follow it a 100%. However, due to my improvement to
my time-management, I have managed to properly
shoot and produce the short film.
!19
Improvements
There are multiple improvements that I could have done. First, I should improve my
technical skills by getting better equipment and by studying cinematography in further detail. This
could help me improve my product in many levels. However, I couldnt because I didnt had the
budget to do it. Secondly, I feel that I could have processed the film immediately after shooting the
footage. If I did this, I could have stayed with my original storyline. Thirdly, I feel that I should
have done the voice re-recording. This could have greatly affected my video as the narration and
voice would have been very clear, which would have made my final product more presentable and
the audience would have a much better times watching it as it will catch their audiences view as
well. Finally, I could have improved my product by using my own background music. This would
have improved my product as it gives a personal touch and could have possibly matched the video
and given a more depressed feel.

Primary Research
Summary of answers
- First of all, it is essential to understand that these answers came from a well known psychiatrist.
Also, it is important that these answers came from his opinion.
- In summary, Dr Rajah has said that depression is a mood disorder which could be caused by many
reasons, such as; genetics, any event that has taken place in their life, certain loss, their motivation,
drugs, etc. Sadly, he has said the number of cases of depression is on the rise every day and affects
both male and female. Ultimately, depression could lead on commit suicide. The most effective way
to treat depression is to visit a psychiatrist as quickly as you can. This is so that the psychiatrist is
able to advise you on what you should do based on how serious your issue is. Also, another thing
that you should do is to talk to people and try to do different activities.
Summary of answers
- I have interview Mr. Jiven Sekar, whom is a famous Malaysian Youtube. He owns and runs his
own channel on youtube, with this best friend; Mr. Caleb, called The Salad Show.
- In summary, Mr Jiven Sekar has said that the main difference between a feature film and a short
film is that in a feature film, you talk about a journey of a character from a-z and the story revolves
around the character. However, in the short film, it is particularly based on emotion and how does
the emotion work straight forward. Basically, a short film is a summary of a bigger film. Next, the
ideal time for a short film would be maximum 10-15 minutes and less than 10 minutes. The most
important aspect of a short film is the story. The reason is because you need to capture the audience
attention in a short time. He also said that you couldnt think too much when you want to start and
you just do it. Also, it is very important to know how you deliver the story. My role models are
Mani Ratnam and David Fincher. To be honest, equipments does matter, however it is more
important to know how to use your equipment. The reason there is no point of using expensive
equipment if you dont know how to use them. Finally, Mr Jiven feels that the Malaysian film
industry is slowly booming as many production companies now gives more operations to good
stories.

Secondary Research
Depression
1) What is Depression?
- Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad. But these feelings are usually short-lived and pass
within a couple of days. When you have depression, it interferes with daily life and causes pain for
both you and those who care about you. Depression is a common but serious illness. Many people
with a depressive illness never seek treatment. But the majority, even those with the most severe
!31
depression, can get better with treatment. Medications, psychotherapies, and other methods can
effectively treat people with depression. There are several forms of depressive disorders. ("NIMH
Depression)

person has several episodes. severe symptoms, but symptoms must last for 2 years.
("NIMH Depression") Some forms of depression are slightly different, or they
may develop under unique circumstances. They include:
- Depression is a real illness that impacts the brain. Anyone suffering from depression will tell you,
its not imaginary or all in your head. Depression is more than just feeling down. It is a serious
illness caused by changes in brain chemistry. Research tells us that other factors contribute to the
onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions,
stress, grief or difficult life circumstances. Any of these factors alone or in combination can
!33
precipitate changes in brain chemistry that lead to depressions many symptoms.("Depression Causes,
Symptoms, and Treatments")
Depression is a serious condition. Its also, unfortunately, a common one. The World Health
Organisation characterises depression as one of the most disabling disorders in the world, affecting
roughly one in five women and one in ten men at some point in their lifetime. It is estimated that
21% of women and 12% of men in the U.S will experience an episode of depression at some point
in their lifetime.("Depression Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments")
Depression does not discriminate. Men and women of every age, educational level, and social and
economic background suffer from depression. There is no area of life that does not suffer when
depression is present. Marriage, parenting, friendships, careers, finances every aspect of daily
living is compromised by this disease. Once an episode of depression occurs, it is also quite likely
that it will recur. And the impact of depression can be even more severe when it occurs in
combination with other medical illnesses such as diabetes, stroke, or cardiovascular disease, or with
related disorders such as anxiety or substance abuse.("Depression Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments")
The problems caused by depression are made worse by the fact that most people suffering from the
disease are never diagnosed, let alone treated. The good news is that when depression is promptly
identified and treated, its symptoms are manageable and there are many effective strategies for
living with the disease. Depression and bipolar disorder are both treated most effectively in their
earliest stages when symptoms are less severe. ("Depression Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments")
Summary
Based on my research, I have found that depression isnt just a problem based on our feelings. It
is also a hormonal problem and a mental condition. There are a lot people whom are affected by
depression and the number is constantly rising. Both men and women are affected by it.
Depression also leads to many other mental illness such as bipolar disorder. Also, they are many
types of depression and each type of depression has to be treated differently as the needs are
different. Finally, often, people get confused with sadness and depression.

2) What Causes Depression?
- Although scientists agree that depression is a brain disorder, the debate continues about exact
causes. Many factors may contribute to the onset of depression, including genetic characteristics,
changes in hormone levels, certain medical illnesses, stress, grief, or substance abuse. Any of these
factors alone or in combination can bring about the specific changes in brain chemistry that lead to
the many symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder and related conditions. ("Depression Causes,
Symptoms, and Treatments)
- Most likely, depression is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and
psychological factors. Depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain. Brain-imaging technologies,
such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have shown that the brains of people who have
depression look different than those of people without depression. The parts of the brain involved in
mood, thinking, sleep, appetite, and behavior appear different. But these images do not reveal why
the depression has occurred. They also cannot be used to diagnose depression. Some types of
depression tend to run in families. However, depression can occur in people without family
histories of depression too. Scientists are studying certain genes that may make some people more
prone to depression. Some genetics research indicates that risk for depression results from the
influence of several genes acting together with environmental or other factors. In addition, trauma,
loss of a loved one, a difficult relationship, or any stressful situation may trigger a depressive
episode. Other depressive episodes may occur with or without an obvious trigger. ("NIMH

Summary
Based on my research, I have found that there are many causes of depression. However, no one
knows of sure whether is it more towards a hormonal problem or an mental issue. In most cases,
people gets depressed because of an certain event that happened in their life. Examples of
events would be a bad break-up, loss of a close friend/family members or any loved one. Such
events can caused big changes to a person perspective of things which eventually makes them
depressed. Another issue will be when someone is very ill. They then to get depressed as they
keep thinking of them dying.
!36
Depression can cause a person to isolate themselves from groups, lose or gain weight, talks
about them being worthless. However, Ultimately, depression causes a person to commit
suicide. Hence, showing that depression causes death. The reason is because the victim will
normally think that he is worthless and is before of death. Also, the victim cant handle the
pressure and stress of living. Thus, this leads them to commit suicide.

Summary
Based on my research, I have found out that they best way to help a depressed person is by
trying to make them help themselves. The reason is because, I can safely say that depression is
a mental disorder and each person will only know how much they are suffering from inside.
Similarly, they will know what they like the most. Hence, to come out from depression, it is
important to help yourself. They are many ways to do that and I have stated a few above. For
example, exercising, eating healthy, have fun, do something new, etc. Things this are to be done
to educe negativity and to boost and promote positivity.
Film-Making
1. What are the differences between a short film and a feature film?
Element Explanation
Original ideas are not easy to come-by but a good way of avoiding
clichd ideas is to watch lots of other short films, look out for any
trends and stay clear of them (See our Related Links:
Recommended Watching for places to watch shorts). Even if your
idea isn't completely original try to look at the subject matter from
An Exciting & Original Idea a different angle or using a different style/technique. If you're
struggling for ideas, you could try to find inspiration in your
experiences or those of the people that you meet or through the
stories that you read in newspapers, magazines and online.("BBC -
Film Network - FilmMaking - Guide - What Makes a Good
Short?")
A good script is key to narrative-based short films and in many
ways it's harder to write a short than a feature because you need to
condense your story and develop your characters in a very short
space of time. All too often films are let down by weak, overwritten
or underdeveloped scripts. Before investing money, time and effort
into shooting your film, it's a good idea to test your script out on
friends and strangers (as friends might fear offending you) and get
as much feedback as you can. See our Filmmaking Guide: Writing
A Strong Script
a Script for more advice & our Related Links: Writing for
scriptwriting organisations, resources and communities. If you
write and direct your own films, it's a good idea to consider where
your strengths lie. It's great if you can do both but if you think
you're stronger at direction/animation then why not consider
collaborating with a talented scriptwriter and see what results come
of it?("BBC - Film Network - FilmMaking - Guide - What Makes a
Good Short?")
!40
Element Explanation
!41
Element Explanation
As a general rule, the longer your short film is, the harder it is to
keep the viewer's attention. This is especially true of online
viewing for instance on Film Network the average time that a
viewer spends watching a film is 4 minutes. Note exceptions to
this rule is documentary, which viewers will often watch for longer.
Many festivals don't accept short films that are over 30 minutes
long; a long film will really have to impress the programmers for
them to include it in their screening, as it means they will not be
able to show so many films in their short film programme. One
Make It Short
filmmaker told us about a film he made that was 26 minutes long.
He applied for festivals all over the world and was rejected by them
all. A year later he re-cut the film to 10 minutes and resubmitted it.
His 10-minute cut was shown at numerous festivals worldwide and
was broadcast on a digital channel. Very short films, especially
romance and comedies, can be popular with distributors and buyers
as they are easier to programme and can be sold to multi-platforms
e.g. online, mobile, VOD etc.("BBC - Film Network - FilmMaking

15 February 2016
Greetings,
My name is Thameal Parthiban and I am currently studying in Fairview International School Johor
Bahru. My school uses The International Baccalaureate (IB) as its main curriculum framework and
I am pursuing the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Being in the final year, the Middle Years
Programme (MYP) requires me to complete a project called the Personal Project. This project will
take about one year to complete. From a very young age, I have always loved movies; hence, I have
decided to make a short film.
I am requesting an informational interview which would take about one hour of your time. I have
prepared appropriate questions and I hope to get a sense of the whole filmmaking process. Ever
!44
since I have discovered your channels on YouTube, I have always enjoyed watching your videos
and your short films and I am a very big fan of your work.
I will be coming to Kuala Lumpur on the 20-02-16. I would appreciate the opportunity to spend one
hour with you for this interview that I am hoping to conduct. I have also attached my contact
information below.
I would like to thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hear a positive response from
you and I hope to meet you in person soon.
Sincerely yours,
Thameal Parthiban
Action Plan
Date
To - Do Explanation
(2015)
For this three days, I have decided to
brainstorm ideas for my short film.
The reason is because, honestly, I
am lacking ideas for my short film.
Initially, I have an idea. However, I
realised that my initial idea isnt
- Pre Production
3th October - 6 October exactly related to depression and
- Brainstorming ideas.
focuses on other themes such as
love. Hence, I will need to gain
ideas. For this to happen, I have
decided to take the three days to
brainstorm and to come out with a
proper plan by the 6th of October.
For the 2 days, I will be doing the
storyboard.I will be taking 2 days to
this because I already know the idea.
Hence, I just have to transform the
- Pre Production
7th October - 9th October ideas to become more visual. The
- Rough Story Board
storyboard will help me and the
crew to understand the whole story.
Also, this will help me when I am
writing the script.
!45
Date
To - Do Explanation
(2015)
I will spend 9 days in doing the
script. The reason why I will taking
9 days in because I feel that it will
- Pre Production
10th October - 19th October take 5 days for me to complete the
- Script
script. Then, I will read over it and
fix my mistakes. This is why it will
take 9 days to complete the script.
This will be my final part of my pre
production. I have decided to spend
5 days here because I will be doing 2
things within this 5 days. The first is
to complete the storyboard and make
it the final storyboard. I have made
an storyboard before this, however
- Pre Production
that is only a rough version. This
20th October - 25th October - Final Storyboard
will be the final one that will be used
- Finding Crew
in the story. After that, I will be
getting my crew together. My crew
are basically my friends whom have
decided to help me to shoot this
film. I will explain with them about
the whole process and what will be
happening.
!46
Date
To - Do Explanation
(2015)
This will be the biggest part and the
most important part of the whole
production. The reason is because I
will be collecting and recording all
the footage in this phase. All the
footage will then be used for the
short film. This will take the longest
time as there are many scenes to
record. Also, another factor that
- Production
9th November - 16th November might actually affect my shooting
- Shoot
will be weather. The reason is
because I cant control nature as it is
an un-controlable force. Hence, I
have decided to take a longer period
to shoot. Then, I will also be
recording all my voice-overs/
narrations and I will be recording the
background music for my short film
in this stage as well.
- Post Production For my post production, I am sure
that I will needing only 4 days as I
believe that I have some skill and
knowledge on editing. Hence, I will
16th November - 20th November use the skills that I already have and
use these skills that I already have,
while editing. Also, i will be
researching on what I will need to
know and other information.
Release Of Video After the editing, I will be releasing
the video on the 21st as I will be
21st November
finishing the post production phase
on the 20th.
Appendix #3
Smart Goals
!47
In, an estimated time of, 2 months. I will be able to successfully
direct and produced the short film which revolves depression
S and hopefully appropriate solutions about it. This short film
would be aimed to influence my target audience to overcome
depression.
My short film would last for , roughly more than 10-15 minutes.
M Pre-production would take roughly a week, then 2-3 weeks for
production and 2-3 weeks for post production.
I am confident that I will be able to complete my work within 2
A months. The reason is because I feel that I have the appropriate
interest, good skills and great motivation to reach this mark.
I believe that my personal project is very relevant to identities
and relationships, which is my chosen Global Context as well.
The chosen topic, depression, revolves around a persons
R personal view, feelings, their identity, etc. Basically it is all
about what makes a person special. Hence, that is why Identities
and Relationship is the most appropriate global context and
there is a 100% relevance to it.
The time frame for me to complete my short film would be 2
T
months.

Script Idea #1
One.
He'll come into your life like a hurricane, so quick and sudden, turning your life into a mess. You would get
lost in his eyes, and your heart will flutter at everything he says that concerns you, or to you. He will quickly
become a part of your life, and without realising, he has resonated himself into your mind.
Two.
He's all you can think about. You breathe him. You live for him. You think of him at 2 am in bed, and at 6 pm
when you're at work. You spend days pondering on how wonderful the future would be. The possibilities are
endless. But only if he's in it.
Three.
!55
He slips slowly from your fingertips. He's a taste of love and that was all you ever wanted. Craved, even.
You do your best to hold onto him, claw at him, as long as he stays. But he's fire, and fire does not like to be
contained. He leaves, destroying everything in his wake, including you.
Four.
You are destroyed. You spend days screaming and hurting. But only on the inside. No one knows the internal
fights going on inside you. It's like you're a shell, the outside seems normal, but inside, you're empty. You
have nothing to offer. You've given him everything. The worst part is, you don't even want anything back.
Five.
You've gotten over what he destroyed, but never tried to build it back up. It's a ghost town inside you, and
you're too patriotic to leave. It doesn't feel as bad now because you're used to the pain. You wince sometimes
at things that remind you of him, like how he never liked to eat pasta with red sauce and now you hadn't
tasted it since. You push away the pain and continue with your days, hoping to get better without actually
trying to heal yourself.
Six.
You are tired of keeping it all bottled up inside you, so you let it out. You tell anyone who'll listen to you
drone on about the boy with hazel eyes and black hair who broke your heart. You tell them how much he
seemed to care, how wild he was, and how in love you were with him. They listen, but just like him, they
only seemed to care. They really didnt.
Seven.
Your heart is still broken. So you break some others in return. The red lipstick always gets them begging for
you, for your love and affection. You taunt and flirt your way through every bar in town, and when you
finally have a man wrapped around your finger, you leave. You break a heart in every bar, and soon many
people know your name. No matter how hard you try to deny it, you hope he knows of you now. Hope he
knows what you've become. And a little bit of hope that he'll come back. So maybe you can have one piece
of your heart instead of being heartless.
Eight.
You no longer care. Not about him, or about anyone for the matter. When you think of love, you think of no
one. You have no reason to wake up, yet no reason to die either. You walk a razor's edge between life and
death.
!56
Nine.
The healing begins. Slowly, but surely. The things you used to laugh at before emits a small chuckle from
you. A laugh escaped uncontrollably from you when you watched Modern Family for the first time in ages.
You are able to cook again, without wondering which kind of sauce to make.
Ten.
Acceptance. He is the past and you don't live there anymore. You will not allow yourself to be defined by his
departure anymore. You throw on the red lipstick and wear the dress he never liked. You've met a guy, with
the most calming blue eyes. You shake out the thought of his blazing embers of hazel and as he pulls out
your seat and asks you what you want to eat, you've decided that you want pasta, pasta with red sauce.
Appendix #8
Script Idea #2
2) 125 Hours
It's been 125 hours since you left. You know the saying of how you never really appreciate
something until it's gone? I wish it could be applied here, but it can't. You were already long gone
before you killed yourself.
The only thing I can say is that I'm sorry. I'm sorry I wasn't there, I'm sorry I didn't listen, and I'm
sorry I didn't care. But sorry won't bring you back. Nothing could. You made your choice. And I
wasn't a part of it. How could you? You just upped and left. Maybe you gave it a long thought,
maybe it was impulsive, maybe you were just in the shower crying like you always do, with the
water running, thinking I couldn't hear you, and you just thought the world would be better without
you.
The world is dreadful. The world is ugly. The world is horrible. I've heard it all before. Your excuse
for leaving us was that it was too much for you. That this was a horrible place and you didn't
belong. Everyone has thought it before. You were thinking of the bombings in Syria, the shootings
in Paris, the Gaza attacks. You were thinking of the kids who hurt you at school, the ones who call
you a freak behind your back and to your face, you were thinking of your failing grades and you
!57
were thinking about your parents you were going to lose once they sign those papers from their own
respective lawyers. And you know that your parents share everything.
You weren't thinking about the couple in love next door who go for walks at the park every day,
5:00 pm sharp. You weren't thinking of the time someone paid for your mothers groceries when she
didn't have enough. You weren't thinking of the men and women uniting to make a change and to
have a positive effect on the world. You weren't thinking of me, who approached you the day those
kids threw paper balls and gum at you.
You weren't thinking of me, your best friend, who was your friend no matter what anyone else said.
You weren't thinking of me on the night you killed yourself, how I sobbed into my mother's arms,
whom I haven't spoken properly to for weeks. You weren't thinking of me when you took 15
sleeping pills. You weren't thinking of me at all.
And that's what hurts me the most. You were selfish. You never called out for help. Every time
someone asked, you pushed them away. You were a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode. You
never told anyone how much time you had until you detonated. And by that time, it was too late.
You had destroyed nearly everyone in the wake.
I can no longer see things in my own eyes. Everything is perceived differently now that you're
gone. When I see the playground, I don't see the playground anymore. I see the place we spent our
childhood years in, before we lost our innocence. When I pass the art classroom in school, I try my
best to not think that they will never showcase your work anymore. When I come home, I ignore
the fact that my mother asked about you all the time, and she tries to ignore me, so she doesn't
accidentally let it slip. It's the little things that get me every time.
I swear, I try so hard to ignore them, to pretend that maybe you never existed, that you were just a
figment of an imagination or that you just ceased to exist, so that I'll stop hurting and missing
someone who's not there anymore, but the damage is done.
It might have been painless for you, in your last hours on Earth, but it was, and still is painful for us
on the Earth without you.

2) Roses
- If you watch the short film, you can observe that I used
2 roses. The roses are white and red colour. The reason is
because white roses represents reverence, humility,
innocence and purity, while red roses represent respect,
love and courage. Also, they are normally used who
people whom had lost a friend whom had an intimate
relationship with for example a close friend, relative, etc.
Hence, this 2 colours of roses where used.
3) Imrans clothing
- If you watch the short film, you can see that Imran
wears a light blue shirt. The colour light blue
represents understanding, healing and tranquility. This
is intentionally done to show that even though some
people appear to be fine, they actually are not. Also,
the colour blue is often associated with sadness.
Finally, it is similar to the colour of the sky, this is to
show that he wants to be with God as he cant
handle living as he is very depressed.
4) Background Noise
- If you were to watch the short film, you can hear the
noise of a kids playing around while Thameal is texting.
This is intentionally done to show that Imran kills
himself on a random day. This is done so that my
audience is able to understand that people committing
suicide happens everyday in random times.
!66
Explanation
Initially, the idea was that I would show two best friends
(Imran & Thameal) having fun together and to show
their strong bond. Also, the beginning scenes show how
strong their friendship is. Then, I would show flashbacks
of Imran committing suicide, and Thameal going to his
graveyard. Suddenly, Thameal wakes up and accept the
truth, at this time, in the background, you hear Thameal
narrating a letter. You then see many events of what had
happened between Imran and Thameal. Then, you see
Thameal being sad and lost being his best friend isnt
together with him. After that, you will see Thameal
writing a letter for his late best friend, Imran. Finally,
you see Thameal reading this last lines of the letter to
Imran in front of his grave and then he leaves. It then
ends with facts and figures of Depression.

Screenshots of editing
- As mentioned earlier, I have decided to use Final Cut Pro X for my editing. The software is very
good, efficient and professional in many ways. So, once i turn on the software, this notification
comes up.
!68
- First, before editing, I have to import all the needed videos. Hence, I will be selecting the videos I
want to edit for the short film. For this short film, I will be using a lot of recorded scenes. The
reason that there is a lot of scenes because each recorded scene only last a few seconds.

In this screenshot, I am showing the edit and special effect that I have done. Also, in the preview
section, you can see a view overlooking the city. That shot is done by a GoPro and is for the suicide
scene.

Background music
- For my background music, I have decided to go with royalty free music. The reason is because if
I were to use royalty free music, Youtube will ban my video as I do not have the right license.
Hence, I have deiced to go with royalty free music. The options that I have taken are Abyss (The
Rose OST) by Daniel Veerapen and Julias Memoirs (Me, Myself and I OST) by Daniel Veerapen.
Finally, another option will be that I will ask my friend to play a piano piece for me.
- However, due to limitation of time, I am unable to get my friend to play the piano piece for me,
hence, I have decided to stick with Abyss (The Rose OST) by Daniel Veerapen and Julias
Memoirs (Me, Myself and I OST) by Daniel Veerapen. Also, I would have need to pay money for
any the extra recording.
Appendix #15
Voice Recording
- Voice recording is very essential for the short film. The reason is because the audio that was
recorded onto the camera isnt very clear and has a lot wind noises and other distractions. Hence,
re-recording the audio would be a very good option so that my audience is able understand what
the characters are saying in detail. Also, it gives a overall good impression of the short film as
quality of audio plays a very big part.
- However, due to limitation of time, I am unable to do the re-recording of the cZ

1) Hi, Please Introduce yourself
2) After watching the short film, what is your opinions of it?
3) Do you think that this short film has managed to create awareness about depression?
4) What improvements do you think that I should have made?
5) What are the pros of my video?
Summary of interview
Hi, Greetings. My Name Is Pranav Joshirao. I am a film enthusiast. After watching the short film, I
feel that the short film is quite emotional. You have showed how the death of Imran has affected the
main character. Based on my opinion, I believe that the short film has managed to create/spread
awareness about depression. This has been achieved when Thameal was narrating the letter, the
letter talks a lot about depression, the effects to it and how can a person help themselves. I feel that
that is very interesting as well. Honestly, I feel that you should change the way you present and put
it together. The reason is because it does spread awareness but it doesnt really catch the audiences
attention. The good parts is the cinematography skills used. I really liked 2 shots from the short film

Appendix #17
Evaluation of sources
The Perks Of Being A Primary Research This movie is a highly rated movie
Wallflower (Observation/Depression) and is about depression. I have
decided to use this move as my
number one reference for its
storyline, style of editing and how
they bring out the issues. My
product will be somewhat
influenced from this movie,
however my story will be a 100%
original.
