B.ARCH. Examination November-2016

A-215: Structure-III

Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 50 Min. Pass Marks: 20

Note: Attempt all five questions. Use of IS: 800 is permitted. Missing data (if any) may be
suitably assumed. Draw neat sketches wherever required.

1 a. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of welded connections. 3

. b. Two plates 10 mm and 18 mm thick are to be joined by double cover butt joint. 7
Design the joint for the given data. Factored design load 750 kN, bolt diameter 20
mm. Grade of steel Fe 410, grade of bolts is 4.6. Use 2 cover plates (one on each
side) of 8 mm thick.
Or, 7
Design a lap joint between the two plates each of width 120 mm, if the thickness
of one plate is 16 mm and the other is 12 mm. The joint has to transfer a design
load of 160 kN. The plates are of Fe 410 grade. Use bearing type bolts.

a. Explain different modes of failure for members in tension. 3

b. Design a double angle tension member connected on each side of a 10 mm thick 7
2 gusset plate, to carry an axial factored load of 375 kN. Use 20 mm black bolts.
.
Assume shop connection.
Or,
7
A tension member of 0.95 m long to resist a service dead load of 20 kN and a
service live load of 60 kN. Design a rectangular bar of standard structural steel of
grade Fe 410. Assume that the member is connected by one line of 16 mm
diameter bolts of grade 4.6.

a. Define: i) buckling of column, ii) slenderness ratio of column 3

b. Design a stanchion 3.5 m long in a building, subjected to a factored load of 550 7
kN. Both the end of the stanchion are effectively restrained in direction and
3 position. Use steel of grade Fe 410.
Or,
. 7
Determine the design axial load capacity of the column ISHB 300@577 N/m if
the length of column is 3 m and its both ends pinned.

a. What are the various elements of plate girder? Explain with neat sketches. 3
b. A simply supported steel joist of 4.0 m effective span is laterally supported 7
throughout. It carries a total uniformly distributed load of 40 kN (inclusive of self

weight). Design an appropriate section using steel of grade Fe 410.
4 Or,
. Design a laterally unsupported beam for the following data: 7
Effective span: 4 m
Maximum bending moment: 550 kN-m
Maximum shear force: 200 kN
Steel of grade: Fe 410

a. Draw neat sketches of various types of roof trusses. 3

b. Discuss various loads and load combinations for design of roof trusses. 7
Or,
Determine the design loads on the purlins of an industrial building near
Visakhapatnam, given:
7
Class of building: General with life of 50 years and Medium
5 Permeability
. Terrain: Category 2 Pitch: 1/5
Maximum dimension: 40 m Sheeting: A.C.
sheets
Width of building: 15 m Spacing of
purlins: 1.35 m
Height at eye level: 8 m Spacing of trusses: 4 m
Topography: less than 3o Span of truss: 15 m
