Lesson Summary
Students will create a board game based on a cultures beliefs, priorities, and aspects of everyday life.

Essential Question Before you began this lesson, what images came to mind
when you hear the term Native American ? Now that you've
learned about a few different tribes, what images come to
mind? What are some common misperceptions of Native
Americans?
Unit Questions What can games show about people, places, and cultures?
What are some games that might show something about
popular culture in the United States today? What do they
show about life in the United States?
Content Questions Why do you think many Native American games encouraged
children to learn adult responsibilities? How is learning such
as this beneficial? What would you enjoy learning in this
way?
Assessment Summary
Students will be evaluated on style and neatness of game, game board and design, historical highlights
and environmental information, and how well the game is played.
Lesson Timeline
Prerequisite Skills
Students should be able to already have a clear idea about board games and what materials come along
with a board game.
Instructional Procedures
1. Open monopoly board game and ask students to identify the game and its pieces.
2. Explain that games and toys are a part of many cultures past and present.
3. Introduce Native American tribes(Mascouten tribe) and tell the students what they valued and
what their lives were like.
4. Tell students they are creating a board game about the Mascouten tribe.
5. Next, divide the students into groups of 2 or 3 to create the game.
6. At the end you may have the students play each others board game.
You could challenge the student to create a different element of the board
Gifted/Talented Student game that other students dont have to do.
