1. (i)A point chargeQ1=10 C is located at P(1,2,3) in free space, while charge Q2=-5 C is at
M(1,2,10).Find (a) the vector force exerted on Q2 bybQ1 and (b)the coordinates of N at
which a point charge Q3 experiences no force.
(ii) State and Explain Coulombs law for electrostatic fields in vector form.
2. (i) Determine D at(4,0,3) if there is a point charge -5 mC at (4,0,0) and a line charge 3
mC/m along the y-axis.
(ii) State and Explain Maxwells first equation for electrostatic fields.
3. (i) Planes x=2 and y=-4, respectively, carry charges 12 nC/m2 and 15 nC/m2. If the line
x=0,z=4 carries charge 10 nC/m, calculate E at (1,2,-3) due to three charge distributions.
(ii) Define (i) electric flux (ii) electric flux density (iii) electric field intensity and deduce the
relationship between all the three quantities.
4. (i) Analyse the electric field around an infinite line with uniformly charged and lying along
x-axis.Use Coulombs law.
(ii) A circular ring of radius 12 cm carries a uniform charge 10 C/m and is placed on the xy-
plane with axis the same as the z-axis. Find the electric field intensity at (0,0,6). Derive the
necessary equations.
5. (i) State and Explain Gausss law for electrostatic fields.
(ii) Find D at P(6,8,-19) caused by (a) a point charge of 30 mC at the origin (b) a uniform
line charge l=40 mC/m on the z-axis (c) a uniform surface charge density s=58.1 mC/m2
on the plane x=4.
6. (i) State and Explain Divergence theorem.
(ii) Define electric potential and obtain the formula for electric potential at any point due
to a point charge. Comment on your result.
7. (i) Deduce the relationship between E and V at appoint in the electrostatic field.
(ii)The point charges -5 nC, 6 nC and 10 nC are located at (0,0,4), (0,0,0) and (3,0,0)
respectively. Find the energy in the system. Derive the necessary equation.
8. (i) For a vector field A, show that divergence of the curl of any vector is zero.
(ii) Three concentric spherical shells r=1, r=2 and r=3 m, respectively, have charge
distributions 2, -4 and 5 C/m2. Calculate (a) the flux through r=1.5m and r=2.7m and (ii)D
at r=0.6, r=2.5 and r=3.5m.
9. (i) State Gauss law. Deduce Coulombs law thereby affirming that Gausss law is an
alternative statement of Coulombs law is implicit in Maxwells first Equation.
(ii) A spherical volume of radius R has a volume charge density of =kr c/m3 where r
=radial distance, k=constant. Find expression for E in the region 0r. Draw the
graph r vs. E.
10. ( a ) If D=(2y2+z) az+4xy ay+x az C/m2, find
( i ) The volume charge density at (1,0,3)
(ii) The flux through the cube defined by 0 x 1, 0 y 1, 0 z 1
(iii) the total charge enclosed by the cube.
( b ) Define the potential difference and absolute potential. Give the relation between
potential and field intensity.
11. Point charges 1 mC and - 2 mC are located at (3, 2, - 1 ) and (1, 1,4), respectively.
Calculate the electric force on a 10-nC charge located at (0, 3, 1) and the electric field
intensity
at that point.
12. The finite sheet 0 < x < 1, 0 < y < 1 on the z = 0 plane has a charge density
ps= xy(x2 + y2 + 25)3/2 nC/m2. Find
(a) The total charge on the sheet
(b) The electric field at (0, 0, 5)
(c) The force experienced by a 1 mC charge located at (0, 0, 5).
13. Planes x = 2 and y = 3, respectively, carry charges 10 nC/m2 and 15 nC/m2. If the line
x = 0, z = 2 carries charge lO nC/m, calculate E at (1, 1, 1) due to the three charge
distributions.
14. Determine D at (4, 0, 3) if there is a point charge 5 mC at (4, 0, 0) and a line charge
3 mC/m along the y-axis.
