Director Registration
Band Directors - 8:00 am in Forbes Center for the Performing Arts First Floor Lobby. Band directors register by District.
Orchestra Directors - 8:00 am in the Festival Conference and Student Center. Orchestra directors register by Region.
Directors may register at either site Forbes Center or the Festival Conference Center.
NAfME membership is required. Please confirm your membership is current at the time of registration, or be prepared to pay the
non-member fee of $124.00.
Registration/Audition Fees
Directors are responsible for payment of the student registration/audition fee(s)
The Registration/Audition fee is $20.00 per student which includes the VMEA fee of .20.
Directors can pre-pay online by Thursday Feb. 23, 2017 or pay on site at Directors Registration.
Directors should bring the pre-pay receipt to directors registration.
Student auditions will not be qualified unless the registration fee is paid.
To help alleviate some logistic and traffic issues, WE ARE NOT ISSUING PRE-PAID REGISTRATION TICKETS.
You may pay all fees by cash, by check payable to VBODA or with a credit card.
Prior to the audition date, directors must provide each student with the current Student Registration & Commitment Form.
These forms are only available in the member area of the VBODA website.
Student Registration
To register, students must have a Student Registration/Commitment Form signed by the student, parent, and director.

Wind & Percussion Student Registration: 8:00 am - 10:30 am at Forbes Center for the Performing Arts 2 Floor Lobby.
Orchestra & Band string bass players: 8:00 am - 10:30 am in the Festival Conference and Student Center.

Students may go directly to the 2 floor lobby and enter the que for audition numbers.
WE ARE NOT USING PRE-PAID REGISTRATION TICKETS, therefore there is no need for students to meet directors in the lobby.
Percussionists
All Percussionists audition in all areas: snare, mallets, and timpani.
A composite score will be used to determine placement within the ensembles.
Preference for instrument assignment will be considered after the ensemble placement has been determined.
Each Percussionist will pay one audition fee of $20.00.
Director Responsibilities
Be sure to thoroughly read the VBODA Administrative Handbook regarding, eligibility, qualification, and rules of behavior.
Verify student eligibility with your District Representative.
Advise students of their eligibility and responsibilities.
Explain band/orchestra choice options to wind and percussion students. If you arent sure about this, please ask your District Rep.
Provide each eligible student with a copy of the instructions and audition requirements www.vboda.org.
Provide each student with a copy of the Student Registration & Commitment Form. This form must be completed prior to
registration and must be presented at the time of registration (this form requires a student, parent, and director signature).
Pay the Student Registration Fee at Director's Registration. Band directors will register by district. String directors will register by
region. Directors who have string and wind or percussion students may register at either registration site.
Directors who are unable to attend must provide a representative. Furthermore, the designee must be advised of the registration
requirements and the procedures to be followed at the audition.
A signed letter from the school principal stating the designee as the schools representative at this event is required.

DIRECTORS MUST INFORM STUDENTS OF THEIR PARTICIPATION OBLIGATION


Any student who auditions and qualifies as a member of the All-VA Bands or Orchestra and chooses not to participate in the event shall
forfeit the right to audition for the ensembles the following year. The only exceptions will be a doctor verified illness or death in the family.
WARM-UP & AUDITION LOCATIONS
Brass, Percussion and Low Woodwinds will audition in the Music Building.
Upper Woodwinds will audition in Taylor Hall.
Saxophones will audition in the Roberts Center of the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.
All String players - Festival Conference and Student Center on the new campus.
All auditions will begin at 9:30 am.
Unofficial audition results will be posted at VBODA.ORG by audition number.
Director Registration Assistants

Director registration assistants (district reps or designee) report to Forbes Center for the Performing Arts 1 floor lobby at 7:30 am.
Please be prepared to judge in case we have need.
Orchestra registration assistants (regional rep. or designee) report to the Festival Conference and Student Center at 7:30 am.
Judges and Assistants meetings:
Wind and percussion judges and assistants meet at 8:45 am in Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.
Orchestra judges and orchestra assistants meet at 8:45 am in the Festival Conference and Student Center.
All will receive audition materials, review adjudicator responsibilities, and review the audition requirements.
Procedures will be reviewed to ensure that students are evaluated according to the information they have been provided.
Every effort must be made to ensure fairness, equity and consistency throughout the audition process.
All judges will be paired with their JMU Judge Assistants and then taken to the audition rooms.
Before coming to auditions:
All adjudicators are asked to download the appropriate etude from the VBODA web site http://www.vboda.org to become familiar
with the piece and review for anomalies.
Report any anomalies to the audition chair.
If need be, any anomalies will be addressed at the adjudicators meeting.
Copies of the prepared selection will be included in the audition room materials supplied at the meeting.
Audition Room Manager:
The audition room manager will provide oversight to ensure a smooth and efficient audition room environment.
The manager will read the audition script, operate the metronome, time the sight-reading review, verify and log individual judges
scores, and staple score sheets.
Room managers must bring a metronome.
Digital recorders will be provided.
Adjudicators:
Adjudicators will concentrate on evaluating student performance. Each judge should bring a personal tuner.
Horn, trumpet and tenor trombone will have responsibilities divided as follows:
The first pair judges will evaluate major scales and the prepared etude.
The second pair of judges will evaluate the chromatic scale and sight reading.
Flute/piccolo, Bb clarinet will have responsibilities divided three ways:
The first pair judges will evaluate major and chromatic scales.
The second pair of judges will evaluate the prepared etude.
The third set will evaluate sight-reading.
Percussion auditions will be divided into four rooms:
The first pair of judges will evaluate snare rudiments, rolls, and sight-reading.
The second pair of judges will evaluate the percussion prepared selection.
Students will drop off snare drums at a secure location between Rooms 2 and 3 and pick them up at the conclusion of the
audition.
The third pair of judges will evaluate timpani tuning and sight-reading.
The fourth pair of judges will evaluate mallets scales and sight-reading.
All other wind auditions will hear the complete audition.
Violin will have responsibilities divided as follows:
The first set of judges will evaluate scales.
The second set of judges will evaluate sight-reading.
The third set of judges will evaluate prepared excerpts.
All other string auditions will hear the complete audition.
2017 VBODA All-Virginia Audition Information Package
Student Information
All-VA Eligibility, Procedures & Important Information for Student Participants
Qualifying students must be enrolled in their school and be a regular performing member of their school band or orchestra program in
order to be eligible to audition for All-Virginia Band or Orchestra.
Audition Time: All auditions will begin at 9:30. Students will be given a printed audition number at Student Registration. Students
must audition in that order and must give that slip of paper indicating their audition number to the guide upon entering the audition
room.
Wind and Percussion players who qualified to audition from both All-District Band and Senior Regional Orchestra on different
instruments must choose one or the other. For the All-Virginia Audition, a student may not audition on two different instruments
String Bass Players who qualified to audition for the All-Virginia Audition from an All-District Band will audition with the orchestra
students using the orchestral audition materials at the Festival Conference and Student Center.
Oboe Players who also play English Horn should be prepared to audition on both instruments. English Horn will only be used if the
music in the All-Virginia Band or Orchestra Event program requires its use.
If a student has been dismissed from an All-District Band or Senior Regional Orchestra for reasons of attendance, conduct, or infraction
of the event rules, that student shall not be eligible to audition for All-Virginia Event in that same school year.
Students should obtain a copy of the audition prepared etude from their director or directly from the VBODA website at
http://www.vboda.org.
Any student who knows the he or she will not be able to participate in the All-Virginia event is not to audition! Students who
audition and decline to participate in the All-Virginia Event prevent deserving students from participating. Any student who declines
participation forfeits future eligibility to audition for the All-Virginia Event.

A printed audition number will be given to the student.
This number must be given to the audition room monitor when the student auditions.

Directors who are unable to attend the auditions must advise designated adults (as approved by the building principal) of the
information above. STUDENTS - If you are being registered by anyone other than YOUR director, that person must have a letter of
approval signed by the school principal, giving this person the authority in your directors stead. Student auditions will only be
considered qualified when all of the above criteria have been met.
