Introduction
Todays students are more inapt with technology than students of previous generations.
Technology has changed how students learn, makes learning more fun, and prepares students for
the future (Cox, 2015). Chalkboards, teachers lecturing, and students writing until they have
cramps in their hands are a thing of the past. Students of the 21st century are using technology at
home and then coming to school with the knowledge necessary to use the required technology,
therefore, they will respond well to technology being integrated into todays lessons.
The artifact that I selected for the media resource is a video from Flocabulary on the
metric system. I use Flocabulary at least twice a week during my closure time with the students,
and this is just one video that brought the lesson together after introducing a way to remember
the metric units in the correct order from biggest to smallest. I introduced the metric units by a
mnemonic phrase, King Henry died by drinking chocolate milk (Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Base, Deci,
Centi, and Milli). After I introduced it, and the students practiced it for a couple of days, I played
this video for closure as the Flocabulary site has a two-minute hip-hop video that goes with the
mnemonic phrase. The students are always excited to see these videos as they are always very
engaging.
Flocabulary is a website that has songs, videos, and activities for K-12 online learning
and is used to engage the students. The students at this school can connect with these particular
videos more that the Brain Pop videos that they are used to seeing due to their culture. They
always beg to see the video again, and they sing the song throughout the day. This media source
lends a hand to connecting the students with their culture as well as wrapping up the lessons that
The artifact that I selected for the technology resource is a Quizizz review that I set up for
the students to play before they took their summative assessment on the Light unit. I based the
questions off of everything that they have been taught about light for three weeks. Each student
was able to log-in to their iPads and play Quizizz. They could do this as a class, which they
really liked to do because they love to compete against each other. However, they could also log-
in during free time and during Science stations to review for their test.
This piece of technology allowed the students to work at their own level and their own
pace. Some students were able to quickly master it, while others needed to review the Quizizz
game many more times in order to be successful. Tahnk (2014) stated that one reason to embrace
technology in the classroom is because ...it allows every student to proceed at a different pace.
Before this placement, my biggest fear was technology, especially the Promethean board.
I have grown and learned so much about technology in such a short time. I have learned that
technology is the future of learning, and I cannot get left behind. During this placement, I was
slow to get going with technology, but my cooperating teacher pushed me along. Once I felt
comfortable on the Promethean board, I moved to incorporating the videos into my lessons. I
was then able to help students with their Standards of Learning (SOL) pass as they worked on
those during our Science stations. Finally, I was able to create an actual review game on Quizizz
for my students, which they loved. I am currently creating a Kahoot game for them to play next
Technology and media are an important part of learning, but they can never take place of
the teacher. A teacher cannot expect for the technology to do all of the work. The students of this
generation were raised with technology. However, we cannot expect for our students to come to

school, throw them a laptop or iPad and expect them to learn on their own. An effective teacher
knows that technology will engage students, but it will only be effective if the teacher has solid
lesson plans, expectations, guidelines, modeling, practice, and assessments that will help them
