Tips for English teachers in teaching English focusing UPSR 2016

candidates. .

(These ideas I get from Mommy Deeba's workshop)

1. For students to be good in English - teacher must know language skills.

Speak with them regularly!!

2. Thinking skills (HOTS) - should be done in every lesson - often!

3. SINGING is the best way of teaching English.

4. Morning English Programme - Sing & Vocabulary

5. Must have ABM / teaching aids

6. Do Scavenger Hunt (jejak maklumat)

7. Understand the kids - BE FIRM!

8. How many vocabs students have?? Worry about it!! Not the technique...

9. Make your own modules. Not just take others!!

10. When teaching certain topics, Eg. People

Teacher finds a song about people - then must have questions.

11. No homework - but give ample exercises in the classroom

12. Teacher finds good books as references especially Singapore books Eg.
Scholastic Book

13. Take all the weak students to sit next to you for remedial.

14. Teacher asks questions and offers rewards.

15. Creating English Environment

16. Use FROG VLE

17. Use i think map (bubbles..circle)

18. BEFORE TEACHING WRITING - make sure students master all these basics

- articles

- singular plural
- subject verb agreement

- punctuation

19. Lesson & teaching approaches must suit students' needs & abilities

20. Emergent technologies can be used in teaching - to be connected globally

21. Refer to the textbook for our daily lesson but do not hang too much to it.

22. Formative assessment is MOST IMPORTANT - for teacher to check and see
if the objective has been achieved in the lesson that day

23. Try to finish the syllabus by July!! - then focus to drill pupils with UPSR
layout.

24. Use WH questions in developing writing.

25. Picture Dictionary is COMPULSORY.

26. Use THESAURUS

27. Teach students IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS - students laminate put on their

table

28. General knowledge + language = students can score

29. Play games Eg. Word Association

30. UPSR NEW FORMAT - Don't teach students to write more than 80 words.
(10 sentences only) 1 sentence 5-6 words.

31. Detecting errors activity - best practice for students

32. Teach students to answer comprehension in FULL SENTENCE

33. Find pictures of situation - COMPILE!

34. Each picture - ask students to find 5-6 verbs

35. FOR GALUS - do not need to teach Past Tense - no need to use the words
given - let them use their own verbs from the pic.

36. Common dialogues - Social expressions - train students to create

conversations among people in the picture

37. DON'T USE -ing - students would not recognize the root word.. USE
PRESENT TENSE.

38. Practice students with regular verbs & irregular verbs Eg. Play-played..
break-broke... practice before start teaching Section C

39. Use 21st century small whiteboard - plywood (formica) 22 - make your
own to teach writing...or even for spelling & grammar activity..

40. Work in group of teachers - make modules
