Course Description:

This course covers: Distillation, Liquid-liquid; Solvent extraction; Supercritical fluid extraction and
Adsorption; Design of industrial separation equipment; Flow-sheeting programs (HYSYS) will be used.

Course Pre-requisite Topics and Skills

Diffusion coefficients, mass transfer mechanisms, mass transfer coefficients, hydrodynamics design,
vapor-liquid equilibrium, flash separator, absorption/stripping design

Course Learning Objective:

This course seeks to:
Develop familiarity with major chemical process separation units.
Apply appropriate criteria for selecting among alternative separations techniques.
Apply equilibrium data and relationships to distillation and extraction processes
Perform design calculations for equilibrium staged separation processes
Analyze multicomponent distillation and extraction processes using HYSIS, and Design II.
Identify, formulate and solve separation problems.
Enhance critical thinking skills while working individually and in a structured team

Develop communication skills through description in oral or written form of the concepts
implied in the above objectives.

Course Learning Outcome

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

Recognize the difference between rate- and equilibrium-based separation processes.

Select and compare solution methods for separation problems including analytical methods
(algebraic or graphical), numerical methods (Excel), and process flowsheeting (HYSYS)
Analyze the performance of existing processes.
Propose a separation method for a mixture on the basis of operating constraints
Identify, formulate and solve equilibrium flash, binary and multicomponent distillation,
extraction, and leaching.
Design separation processes
Communicate technical results effectively in written and oral forms
Work as part of team on an open ended design problem
Locate and utilize resources (textbooks, journal articles, and WWW sites) to analyze and design
separation processes.
