PROBLEMS MET DURING THE ACTUAL PRACTICE TEACHING
AT
SAN FRANCISCO NATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL

I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand was a Chinese Proverb. When
I started my first actual teaching that was the time I understand my role as a practice teacher. It
was self-fulfilling.
Many people said, the best thing that you can learn something is to experience it. By this, you
can always remember, understand and analyze every important concepts and ideas in every
learning place. Now its time for us to practice all the theories that we learned in the four corners
of SSCTs classroom. Now, its time to test if they can be applied in the real scenario or not.
January 3,2017 was the date we were disseminated to other schools for our practice teaching.
At first we were excited and imagining the best ideal scene inside the classroom. In our first
week of observation, we were stunned to see the very challenging scene inside the classroom.
We were assigned in San Francisco National High School to complete our 200 hours of
practice teaching. The name of my critic teachers were Ma. Theresa V. Jacob handling the
sections Grade-11 STEM and Elizabeth Baldoza handling Grade 11-HUMMS and Grade 8-
Unity.
I have to prepare three lesson plans every day, one for General Chemistry, Practical
Research and General Biology.
My basic routine on that school was to go there before 7:00am to attend the flag
ceremony at exactly 7:30 assist the students to fall in line and to sing the National Anthem.

With no other choice, even if everyone was still hesitant to do upcoming tasks and
responsibilities we accepted the challenge and strong determination in mind that we can make it
up to the last. I always made my students discover first the subject matter before discussing it to
them. They usually do it individually before and after the lesson. I gave them time to correct their
own work basing on their learning after class discussion. For my own evaluation, I construct
concept maps with linking items from one box to another. I also employed fun learning and
challenging activities such as moving exams, one-minute challenge, and jingle. I gave them also
anticipation guides for my student to prepare the way they think in the subject matter.
During my practice teaching, I have chosen the path of being a strict yet approachable
teacher worthy of remembering. It was because I dont want them to take school for granted. I
have seen their situation. I need them to stand up and look forward for the dreams they want to
come true. Studying their lesson is one of the most first big step to make those dreams come true.
I care for those students. I know those students have their big potential to stand up and be better.
They are hope of their families.
The most difficult part in teaching as I have experienced being a student-teacher was
classroom management. Students may behave for a while but start to fuzz later on as I go along
with my class discussion. There were times when students really get into my nerve. But then as a
teacher in front of them, I opted to give them fun activities as I realized its what they needed. I
always tried to make learning fun soon after and make learning memorable for them.
Oftentimes I would let them do discovery learning and have them ask questions on the
part they were confused with. I even do remedial classes and always opt for mastery though the
course is spiral. It was very fulfilling to see students actively doing learning on their own. I
always keep them busy inside and even outside the classroom but still inside the school campus.
Teaching my students does not revolve only around the subject matter. I was not a spoon-
feeder type of teacher. I do input some knowledge and would have them try to prove
learning. I also integrate values on my lessons for I would want them to become better
persons through reflections on the values integrated in my lessons.

The most fulfilling part was when I come to realize that Ive been unconsciously
touching my students lives. It was so amazing to know that I was able to motivate them to
learn and dream for greater heights in life. It was a one-of-a kind experience and feeling I
will never forget. I even cried in one of my classes on my last day in teaching. I cried because
of the feedbacks I heard. I cried not because the comments are negative rather it was because
it was so heart-throbbing to know I was able to inspire them and was able to cater their
learning needs at the same time.

The lessons I had with my students were quite simple and scientific yet it was
absorbed not only by their minds but their hearts as students as well. Never in my wildest
dream did I dreamt of becoming a teacher but being with them made me realize my worth as
person. My being a teacher was never an accident indeed. Choosing education was meant for
me. I dare to conclude because I come to realize my purpose being with my students. The life
of a teacher indeed is a life to inspire young minds to come to realize their worth and purpose
as it had been for me.

My practice teaching have been very memorable for me as a student-teacher. One

can never really tell the things to acquire in teaching. Values, skills, and realization had
transformed me as a person being with my students in just a span of three months. I imparted
them the learnings I had but I also learned a lot from them at the same time. The experiences I
had with them for sure will never be forgotten. The moments we had, I will always cherish.
Practice teaching indeed is life-transforming. This time its for the better
