just in case
For our 9:45 Genesis worshipers who are getting to know
the Sanctuary: the best way to reach restrooms during the
service is to go to the Narthex (entry doors for the Sanc-
tuary on Church Street). There is one restroom available
in the Narthex, and more in Allen Hall, adjacent to our
Sanctuary; our ushers can direct you. We ask you enter and
exit through the back of the room to minimize distractions
in worship.

recycle your bulletin

8:15am & 9:45am worshipers can help the church be better
stewards of our resources and environment. If you do not
want to keep this extremely handy bulletin, just hand it to
one of our ushers as you leave. The bulletins are reused
for the 11:00am worship service, and recycled on Monday
morning.

notes
Today is the first of six Sundays in the season of Lent.
These forty days leading up to the Resurrection give
us the opportunity to journey with Jesus during
the final days of His earthly life. As you participate in
Ash Wednesday, the daily Lenten Devotions, weekly
worship services, Holy Week services, Easter Sunday,
and the weeks following, youll see more clearly the
transformation of the world created by the mission of
Christ through the cross. The crown of thorns displayed
on the cross this morning is a brutal reminder of the
horror and sadistic mockery endured by our Savior. If
we are not careful, we can view the cross with a kind
of romanticism rather than the instrument of torture and
barbarism which it was. The crown of thorns and the
cross are ever a reminder of the reality of our sin and of
the price Jesus willingly paid for our redemption before
God. How could someone dismiss their own sin and
what Christ did to cover that sin? We have gathered this
morning to worship our Savior.

about communion
We believe in an open table. We invite every believer
who has publicly professed faith in Jesus to join us in this
celebration. We believe by the power of the Holy Spirit, that
the bread and the cup become for us the living presence
of the broken body and shed blood of Jesus. We do not
believe it becomes actual flesh and blood, but the spiritually
living presence of God through the Holy Spirit.
Presbyterian churches do not have altars like other
churches may. We have a table, symbolic of the Great Feast
of Thanksgiving we will one day enjoy with Jesus and the
heavenly host, as illustrated in Matthew 26:29 & Luke 22:16
18. We view the cross of Christ as the final and sufficient altar,
on which the ultimate sacrifice was made.
Suggestions for Celebrating Communion. Before serving
the bread and wine (non-alcoholic grape juice), the pastor
will lead the congregation in a time of prayer. During this
time, confess your sins to God; ways you have violated His
commandments; areas of your life where you are not living
by faith; things you do in an attempt to earn His favor.
While the bread is being served, meditate on what the
death of Jesus means for you; how the sins you confessed
were laid upon Him and paid for with His body. Rejoice that
you do not suffer Gods judgment because Christ suffered
this judgment on your behalf.
While the cup is being served, let it wash away your guilt,
much the way we are washed spiritually by the blood of the
Lamb (Jesus). One day, you will feast with God and all that
your heart desires will be fully satisfied. Take this time to
confess specific things that capture your heart more than
God (approval of others, success, your family, etc.).
Rest in His presence.
