Mission Report Criteria Chart

I have read and understand the criteria chart for the Mission report.
I understand that late papers and projects will not be accepted and will
not be graded. I understand that the mission report, pioneer journal, and
3-D mission-era project will be a significant factor in my childs third
trimester social studies grade.
Students have chosen or been assigned a mission for their report.
Students will be responsible for doing the research and gathering the
information for their particular mission. There are many on-line sites
students may use to gather information about their mission. Examples after
a quick search: http://www.californiamissions.com;
http://missions.bgmm.com; and http://thecaliforniamissions.com. In
addition, the public library is excellent source for mission information.

Mission Report Criteria Chart

Note: Students will have the opportunity to do some of the research
for their mission report in school, but may need to complete the report
at home. Your child will receive worksheets to help guide his/her
research and note-taking. At least one section of the report must be in
cursive handwriting (part of the standards for fourth grade). At least
one page of the report must be typed; the remainder of the report may
be typed, written in cursive or manuscript.

A. Title Page
The title page should include the name of the mission, a small picture or
drawing of the mission, the students first and last name, and the date.

Use this exact table of contents with page numbers.

section about his/her own mission)

C. Written Report
This is the body of the report. Be sure to provide all the information
required for each section. More than one source for information about
the mission must be used. The Mission Description section, about the
students own mission, must be written in the students own words.
Remember to use what you have learned about summarizing and restating
main ideas. Use complete sentences with appropriate transition words and
phrases. Remember: this is a report, not a list of facts.

Use the worksheets that were provided to help organize your report.

1. The Mission System (Information will be provided)

This section provides an overview of the Mission system.
Explain:
- Why the missions were founded
- How many missions there were
- How their locations were decided
- Who was involved in planning, building, and running the missions
- The importance of El Camino Real.

2. Father Junipero Serra (Information will be provided)

- Include a brief history of Father Serras life and
- Father Serras contributions to the Mission period

3. Mission Description (Research time will be provided. It is the

students responsibility to write this section of the mission report)
Describe your mission including:
- Its location
- Its number in the Mission system
- When it was founded and by whom
- Unique architectural features of the church and/or out-buildings)
- Number of people who lived there
- Native American tribes in the area
- Any interesting or unusual facts about your mission
- The present condition of your mission
- Include at least one picture or drawing of your mission and/or its
outbuildings. Each picture should be captioned
 - This section should be in report form, in complete sentences.

4. Daily Life (Information will be provided)

This section should include:
- Information about people living in and around the mission (including
Native Americans, padres, settlers, and soldiers)
- Social systems
- Food
- Trades
- Crafts
- Religious practices, customs, ceremonies, etc.

5. Bibliography
This is a list of all of the materials you used to complete your report.
(Follow the format on the worksheet.) Take notes about websites, books,
and videos you have used in your research for use in the bibliography

Make your report neat and complete. All papers will be graded for spelling
and grammar. Please edit your paper before you make your final copy.
Publishing paper will be provided by the teacher. Your final report should
sound like it was written by a fourth grader. It should not sound like a
textbook, the internet, or as if it was written by an adult. When you are
writing your report, DO NOT copy information directly out of the book or
from the internet (that is plagiarism). Read the information and then put it
in your own words. Put your report in a folder. Late papers will not be
accepted for any reason.

Im here to answer any questions. Begin early and complete the mission
report and 3-D mission-era project in steps, so you wont be rushed at the
last minute.

Students also need to complete a 3-D mission-era project. Information

and examples of possible projects are on the following page.
 Mission-Era Projects Guidelines

The final date the mission-era project will be accepted: Thursday, April
27, 2017

As part of our study of the Mission period of California history, students

must produce a mission-era project.

Please follow these guidelines for a traditional 3-D model:

a. You may use anything except food to build your model or diorama
(foam board, clay, Legos, etc.). The more creative, the better.
b. You may use store-bought kits if you would like (Michaels, Education
Station, etc.), but you can also make your own from cardboard, etc.
c. The mission must be a reasonable size for our classroom, no larger
than 18 x 18 (or standard mission-kit size).

Parents and family members are encouraged to participate in building the 3-

D mission-era project to make this a family learning experience.

Special Projects
Students do not need to build a mission to meet the criteria for the project
portion of this assignment. For example, students may submit a project that
includes a Powerpoint slide show of the students visit to a mission, write an
extensive journal about life on a mission from the point of view of a padre
or a Native American and how their viewpoint changes over time, make a
detailed map of the mission system along the Camino Real. Other sample
projects: write and produce a play (original script must be turned in) about
life on a mission, compile a photo album that includes pictures of the mission
and detailed explanations of the different parts of the mission, create a
detailed timeline of the mission system with pictures, or design the 22 nd
mission (where, why, what changes you would make, etc.).

Please speak with your childs teacher if you have a special project in mind
to make sure that it will be accepted. Projects must demonstrate that time,
thought, and effort went into the final product.

This project is in addition to - it does not replace - the mission report.
