Foundations of Diagnostic Medical Sonography where I was taught how to
apply and understand sonographic terminology, basic anatomical structures and body systems, sonographic image planes and anatomical sections, basic sonographic applications utilized in general, vascular, and cardiac sonography, patient care techniques, apply patient information, basic laboratory values, key functions of sonographic equipment, common pathologies, and professionalism. Physical Principles of Ultrasound and Instrumentation I and II. This course included analyzing physical principles key to sound production and propagation, transducer construction, design, and purpose, modifying and adjusting operator controls, sonographic image quality, image artifacts, hemodynamic principles, color and spectral Doppler, M-mode, concepts related to the interaction between ultrasound and tissue, and the use of performance testing and quality control in sonography. Abdominal Sonography I included the normal and abnormal anatomy and function of abdominal and retroperitoneal organs. Abdominal Sonography II where I learned the anatomical position, function, and the normal and abnormal findings of superficial parts. This includes the thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands, scrotum, prostate, penis, breast, gastrointestinal tract, and musculoskeletal system. Vascular Sonography I where I learned to evaluate the effects of arterial and venous hemodynamics, learned the normal and abnormal anatomy, learned to proficiently perform abdominal Doppler and upper and lower extremity venous Doppler exams, and I learned techniques used in venous mapping and insufficiency exams. Vascular Sonography II included learning how to evaluate the effects of arterial hemodynamics on sonographic vascular examinations. Explained the anatomy and physiology of cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial systems. Evaluated sonographic features of normal and abnormal cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial examinations. Described the pathophysiology of cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial systems as it relates to diagnostic medical sonography. Analyzed clinical patient history, lab values, critical findings, and other diagnostic examinations relating to vascular sonography. Demonstrated proficiency in the performance of cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial sonographic examinations. Identified and interpreted techniques used in physiologic arterial examinations. Examined the use of vascular contrast agents. Evaluated quality assurance statistics used in determining the effectiveness of vascular sonography. Neurosonography included learning about the features of the brain development, and physiology of the brain and pediatric spine. It also included the evaluation of sonographic features associated with anomalies, pathologies, and differential diagnosis in the brain and pediatric spine. I learned specific lab values and how to properly take care of the neonate while I am performing its ultrasound. OB/GYN Sonography I where I learned how to describe the anatomy, sonographic features, and physiology of the female reproductive organs. I also learned how to evaluate sonographic features associated with anomalies, pathologies, and differential diagnosis of the female reproductive organs. I learned how to described the sonographic features of fetal development in the first trimester and how to evaluate the sonographic features associated with anomalies in the developing fetus. I learned how to identify lab values associated with normal and abnormal pregnancies and how to assess pertinent clinical patient history, lab values, other diagnostic examinations and sonographic findings as the information applies to obstetrical and gynecological sonographic examinations. Identified proper patient care and proper patient education regarding procedure and demonstrated the ability to perform female pelvis and first trimester sonographic examinations. OB/GYN Sonography II where I determined the normal sonographic features associated with the anatomy of the developing fetus and pregnancy and distinguished the sonographic features of abnormal fetal anatomy and fetal anomalies associated with the developing fetus and pregnancy. I assessed normal pregnancy, abnormal pregnancy including high risk, and pregnancy outcomes. I analyzed clinical patient history, lab values, other diagnostic examinations and sonographic findings as the information applies to sonographic examinations, as well as demonstrating the ability to perform sonographic images of the normal appearing fetus, including maternal structures and obstetrical pathologies through computerized simulation and volunteer patient scanning. Echocardiography I where I learned how to explain normal cardiac anatomy and embryology, cardiac sonographic features and evaluation methods, learned how to associate abnormal cardiac embryology with sonographic features related to congenital defects of the heart, learned how to utilized the appropriate method(s) to evaluate normal and abnormal cardiac physiology and hemodynamics, learned how to assess for normal and abnormal sonographic findings associated with native and prosthetic cardiac valves, and I learned how to analyzed clinical patient history, lab values, and other diagnostic examinations associated with cardiac evaluation. I also demonstrated proficiency in the performance of adult echocardiography examinations. Echocardiography II where I learned how to evaluate normal and abnormal systolic and diastolic ventricular function. Described sonographic features associated with cardiac pathologies. Learned how to compare and contrast stress, TEE, 3D/4D, and contract echocardiography. Evaluated the heart for cardiac pathologies including cardiomyopathy, tumors/masses, aortic and pericardial diseases. Explained coronary artery disease and its sonographic features. I also demonstrate proficiency in the performance of adult echocardiographic examinations. Clinical Practicum I, II, II, IV, V, and VI where I practiced and applied all that I learned in the classroom setting.
