ABC OF ELECTRICAL MACHINERY

Mário Ferreira Alves (malves@dee.isep.ipp.pt) Department of Electrical Engineeri
ng in March 2003
Currently, we consider the machines part of our day-to-day. The engines driving
force in applications such as traction find them in applications as diverse as v
acuum.

Generators (dynamos and alternators) can be found in electric power plants (hydr

ertain types of industries, or even an automobile, motorcycle or bicycle, for ex

ty distribution, as in the field of domestic applications such as battery charge
rs, portable telephones, lamps, halogen lamps and many others. Also in the field
of transport, there are numerous applications of electrical machines. As we all
know, vehicles whose towing results from the movement of an internal combustion
engine, require for its operation of electrical machines such as the alternator

ignition. Since the traction power a reality in relation to railways, are also a
lready a big gamble by the manufacturers of road vehicles, including cars, motor
bikes and bicycles. This traction is obviously obtained from the rotation of an
electric motor (DC or AC). Also noteworthy is that the transport of materials in
an industrial environment is almost entirely made up of electric vehicles, whet
her driven by an operator (trucks) Automated Guided (AGV - Automatic Guided Vehi
cles) or autonomous (robots). Classification of Electrical Machinery Electrical
machines may be classified as to the function they fulfill: • Transformation of
mechanical energy into electrical energy - Generators Machinery Rotary • Transfo
rmation of electrical energy into mechanical energy - Motors • Conversion of cur

Reciprocating engines
Reciprocating engines, commonly used in motor vehicles, whose principle of opera
tion, the reciprocating motion of the piston within the cylinder that passes thr
ough the rod, a circular motion to the crankshaft. The sequence of operations -
intake, compression, expansion and exhaust - take place in a cycle of four movem
ents of the piston - 4-stroke engine, or a cycle of movement of the plunger 2 -
2-stroke engine. 1st Time - Admission to the plunger down, aspire to fuel-air mi
xture into the cylinder through the intake valve opens. 2nd Time - Compression T
he intake valve closes,€the piston compresses the mixture rises and a spark jump
s the candle. 3rd Time - Expansion The mixture ignited by spark plug, explodes a
nd pushes the plunger down. 4th Time - Escape The exhaust valve opens, the pisto
n rises extruding cylinder combustion gases. Continue reading

Photocopier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A copier is a printing device for reproducing documents. A copy made by a photoc
opier is also popularly known as xerography and improperly in Brazil, because in
fact Xerox is the name of a company. Its operation is based on the principles o
f static electricity. Originally, the process known as Light-Lens, a photosensit
ive drum was charged with the original image reflected in mirrors. After this st
age, they form a latent image of the original surface of the cylinder. The cylin
der receives a load of material known as toner or toner that is attracted by the
charges that form the image. The toner is then transferred to paper, also by me
ans of electric charges, and then fixed to it, in a process involving heat and p
ressure. Today, imaging is formed in the cylinder with the use of lasers or ligh
t emitting diodes (LEDs) in the process called digital, similar to laser printer
s. Was introduced by Xerox in the 1960s and was gradually replacing the copy pro
cess for carbon paper. Continue reading

The Fax is short term from the Latin word facsimile or Telefacsimile. Also refer

Group 4 - Operates over ISDN line (GSM). The ITU-T Recommendation T.6 defines Fa
x compression for communication over ISDN lines. The operating principle is base
d on reflected light, so there is an illumination of lines sampled by a CCD (Cha
rge Coupled Device) which shows the brightness. The CCD sensor sample data using
1728 pixels per line, on one A4 page 1145 lines are sampled. More than one line
can be sampled at a time are sampled, two or four examples are easily found. Co
