Task 1 Visual Elements

These are the basic elements used by artists and
designers when creating their work. They are
what you use to make visually pleasing art or
design work. When we make art or design work
we need to understand and use these elements.
Show an example of each in the
boxes;
LINE A continuous
make made by a pen,
pencil, paintbrush

SHAPE A flat closed

2D area. Using made by a
line. It can have length
and width.

COLOUR One of the most

important elements. It is created
by light. It can have shades
(darker), tints (lighter) and be hot
or cold.
TONE How light or
dark an object, landscape,
person, area are. The
difference in light and dark
tone is called contrast.

TEXTURE Describes
the feel of a surface. The
surface quality of an
object can be life like or
imagined.

PATTERN An arrangement of
other elements which are or can
be repeated in a variety of ways.

FORM A
3D object that can be
viewed from many sides.
A form takes up space and
volume. It can be drawn
using tone.

Task 2 LINE
Using a pencil or pen on the next page
try and create as many different
examples of line as you can;
On the next page using horizontal lines
(across the way), join the vertical lines
up (down the way). You should use
different thicknesses, styles and
variations of lines to do this like the
example above.

Task 3 TONE
Task 3 Tone
Using your pencil copy these examples
of tonal drawings on the next page.
Task 4 SHAPE
Copy the shapes in the photographs as
closely as you can;
Use the grid to help you draw the
trainers box by box to get the correct
shape.
Task 5 COLOUR
In art and design we can mix different
colours from the 3 primary colours; red,
yellow and blue. Using coloured pens or
pencils fill in the colour wheel above.

Colours can also be hot or cold. Hot colours

give a warm feel, examples of these are red,
orange, brown, yellow. Cold colours are the
opposite and feel cold when looking at
them, examples of these are blue, grey,
lilac.
Create your own colour wheel copying from
this design on the next page.
Task 6 Form

Form is created when we use

tone for highlights and
shadows in our artwork to
give a 3D effect. Using the
examples practice shading to
create tone and form.
Add tone into this face to create form.
Remember to think about where the
light is coming from!
Task 7 Texture
Texture is how we show the surface of
an object, person, landscape, etc in art.
It can be smooth, rough, jaggy Look at
the following examples of textures then
try to make your own marks to show
texture on the next page.
Using your own different textures copy
this landscape on the next page.
Task 8 PATTERN
Pattern is made up of different visual
elements which are repeated in an
arrangement. Create your own
examples of pattern using them;
