1. Rainfall falls on most parcels of property throughout the world.

Describe one method that could be

used to collect this natural resource.

The wet system is a method for collecting rain water in which you place collection pipes underground
connecting multiple downspoats from gutters. The rainwater then fills the underground pipes which
causes the water to rise into the vertical pipes until it spills into the water collection tank. All of these
pipes must have a sealed connection or this will not work. Also the connection on the tank must be
lower then the lowest gutter on the house.

2. Describe a landscape design technique that benefits the environment.

Planting native plants and using materials that do not significantly affect the runoff rate of the
existing land are the best for the environment. Plants with strong roots can also be used to reduce
runoff and erosion.

3. Energy use is high in commercial buildings. What might a building designer do to reduce energy
consumption in a building?

Install renewable energy sources such as sun roofs, solar panels. And use energy efficient items.

4. Describe a design feature for a residential structure that would likely result in reduced water use.

The wet system could be put in place for use from sprinklers as the water does not need to be
treated. This benefits the environment because it is clean energy.

5. Describe an innovative construction method or technique that benefits the environment.

To me an interesting way of building is through the use of adobe clay, as you are using the
environment to protect you from the environment. This was commonly used in the desert, because
rocks, and mud was prevalent. This has very little impact on the environment.

6. During the construction cycle of the building, materials and components are delivered to the site.
List a strategy that you will use to recycle the waste produced during the construction phase.

An estimation of how much material is required. Use the material that is needed. Crush up extra
concrete and use as stone, crush up extra asphalt and reuse, clean untreated wood and remill melt
down and reform metal.

7. Describe a feature you could incorporate in a home design that would improve indoor
environmental quality.

Vents in the kitchen and bathroom that automatically turn on when the air is of lesser quality would
reduce the indoor environmental quality.

8. Building sites offer natural resources that can be utilized for the life of the building. Describe a
method to use a sites natural resources in the construction of the structure.

Website: http://www.nrdc.org/cities/building/rwoodus.asp

If the building site is in a wooded area, the construction team can use the surrounding lumber as a
resource instead of buying all the wood they use. Some wood might have to be bought. And also
any structures, like sheds, or decks, can be made strictly out of the surrounding areas wood.
