Pluses of Tutoring 2

How much of an effect can tutoring have on not only the student but the tutor as well? It is said
that tutors have more of a motivation for their classes. The article is titled Quality of Learning
with an Active Versus Passive Motivational Set by Carl A. Benware and Edward L. Deci. This
essay will be about how good this article is and what the authors ideas about it are.

One of the main points the author is trying to point out how tutors not only help the one in need
but improves the tutors skills as well. Students that a tutoring a certain course to other students
are motivated to learn more about that class. Tutoring can help enhance learning since said
person is just reviewing the material to help other, there are other things that tutoring can help
like motivation for a course. The study is about how if someone teaches the material it would
make them have more of an active motivation on the topic. The author is trying to say that it is
better to be more of an active learner because you get more out of what are learning instead of
just looking for a good grade.

There are a lot of examples to go by with the information given and it helps give more of an idea
of what the writer is talking about, though it seems that some may go on for longer than needed.
In the article, there was a study about how the students would take a 25-page article about brain
functioning and to study for 3 hours. They would then be given a questionnaire about their
attitude and motivation. There was 19 subject that are going to teach the material and 21 subjects
that are going to be tested on the material. The results of the study were that the students who
studied to teach got a higher mark and gained more of an interest in the material than the students
that studied for a test.

The article was more good than it was bad. The study in the article showed how productive
active learners can be. Although there was not a lot of information about passive learners
compared to active learners. It showed lots of information about the study like how many
students there was, what was being read and how long each student studied the material given. It
seemed a bit difficult to stay focused on the article since there was information that seemed
unimportant.

Based on the studies and information given in this article, it is said that tutoring helps both the
student and the tutor. It was a well thought out article with a flaw or two, but it is more good than
bad. This article shows that tutoring can be a superior way to learn for some people. You have to
be an active learner if you want to be a tutor since you cant just take your time with the material.
