GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. The question paper comprises of two Sections, A and B.
2. All questions are compulsory.
3. Question numbers from 1 to 3 in Section - A are one mark questions. These are to be
answered in one word or in one sentence.
4. Question numbers from 4 to 6 in Section A are two marks questions. These are to be
answered in about 30 words each.
5. Question numbers from 7 to 18 in Section A are three marks questions. These are to be
answered in about 50 words each.
6. Question numbers from 19 to 24 in Section A are five marks questions. These are to be
answered in about 70 words each.
7. Question numbers from 25 to 33 in Section B are multiple choice questions based on
practical skills. Each question is one mark question. You are to select one most appropriate
response out of the four provided to you.
8. Question numbers from 34 to 36 in Section B are questions based on practical skills. Each
question carries two marks.

SECTION A

1. Write the name and structure of an alcohol with three carbon atoms in its molecule.
2. What is DNA and where is it found in a cell?
3. In a food chain of frog, grass, insect and snake, assign trophic level to frog.
4. The absolute refractive indices of glass and water are 4/3 and 3/2, respectively. If the speed of
light in glass is 2 x 108 m/s, calculate the speed of light in (a) vacuum and (b) water
5. In Area A, the leaf material available to beetles was very less. What are the two consequences
seen in the beetles?
6. The magnification produced by a spherical mirror is -3. List four informations you obtain from
this statement about the mirror/image.
7. Calcium is an element with atomic number 20. Stating reason answer each of the following
questions:
(i) Is calcium a metal or non-metal?
(ii) Will its atomic radius be larger or smaller than that of potassium with atomic number 19?
(iii) Write the formula of its oxide.
8. What is meant by Isomers? Draw the structure of two isomers of butane. C 4H10. Explain what
cannot we have isomers of first three members of alkane series.
9. An element M with electronic configuration (2,8,2) combines separately with (NO 3)-, (SO4)2-
and (PO4)3- radicals. Write the formula o three compounds so formed. To which group and
period of the Modern Periodic table does the element M belong? Will M form covalent or ionic
compounds? Give reason to justify your answer.

10. Two elements A and B belong to the 3rd period of Modern Periodic table and are in group 2
and 13 respectively. Compare their following characteristics in tabular form:
(a) Number of electrons in their atoms
(b) Size of their atoms
(c) Their tendencies to lose electrons
(d) The formula of their oxides
(e) Their metallic character
(f) The formula of their chlorides
11. List three distinguishing features of sexual and asexual reproduction in tabular form.
12. The genotype of green-stemmed tomato plants is denoted by GG and that of purple-stemmed
tomato plants as gg. When these two plants are crossed:
(i) What colour of stem would you expect in their F1 progeny?
(ii) Give the percentage of purple-stemmed plants if F1 plants are self-pollinated.
(iii) In which ratio would you find the green and purple colour in the F1 progeny?
13. Two areas of study namely evolution and classification are interlinked. Justify the
statement.
14. What is multiple fission? How does it occur in an organism?
15 A student wants to project the image of a candle flame on a screen 48 cm in front of a mirror
by keeping the flame at a distance of 12 cm from its pole.
(a) Suggest the type of mirror he should use.
(b) Find the linear magnification of the image produced.
(c) How far is the image from its object?
(d) Draw the ray diagram to show the image formation in this case.
16. What is meant by power of a lens? What does its sign (+ve or ve indicate? State its SI unit.
How is this unit related to focal length of a lens?
17. State the laws of refraction of light. If the speed of light in vacuum is 3 x 10 8 m/s, find the
speed of light in a medium of absolute refractive index of 1.5.
18. An object of height 5 cm is place perpendicular to the principal axis of a concave lens of length
10 cm. If the distance of the object from the optical centre of the lens is 20 cm, determine the
position, nature and size of the image formed using the lend formula.
19. (a) Give a chemical test to distinguish between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon.
(b) Name the products formed when ethane burns in air. Write the balance chemical equation
for the reaction showing the types of energies liberated.
(c) Why the reaction between methane and chlorine in the presence of sunlight is considered a
substitution reaction?
20. (a) Name the human male reproductive organ that produces sperms and also secretes a
hormone. Write the functions the secreted hormone.
(b) Name the parts of human female reproductive system where
(i) Fertilization takes place
(ii) Implantation of the fertilized egg occurs
21. What is pollination in plants? How does pollination lead to fertilization? Explain.
22. (a) Define optical centre of a spherical lens.
(b) A divergent lens has a focal length of 20 cm. At what distance should an object of height 4
cm from the optical centre of the lens be placed so that its image is formed 10 cm away from
the lens. Find the size of the image also.
(c) Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image in above situation.
23. Draw a labeled diagram of human eye and explain different defects of vision with the methods
of correction.
24. Both soap and detergent are some type of salts. What is the difference between them?
Describe in brief the cleansing action of soap. Why do soaps not form lather in hard water? List
two problems that arise due to the use of detergents instead of soaps.
