Essay: statement of purpose

1. Why are you applying for the MA in TESOL?

2. What Do You Wish to Accomplish in The Course of Study?
3. What Do You Have to Offer the Program and Its Other Participants?
4. How Do You See Yourself in Functioning in Fast Paced, accelerated Summer
Coursework?

Most individuals have a degree of ambition as it is the part of human nature that drives
us to accomplish various things and seek to be a part of something greater than oneself.
After starting a career in education and having the opportunity to work in the United States
of America with English Language Learning (ELL) students, I developed the desire to
pursue a Masters in TESOL. I have been convinced through interactions with my colleges,
that have gone through this intensive program, that doing so will expose me to information
and experiences that will enable me to reach my maximum potential as an educator who
focuses on teaching the English language to those who want to learn how to speak, read,
and write fluently in English. Additionally, I will be able to identify key linguistic theories
and be able to connect these theories with effective teaching practices.

I have always dreamed about earning a masters degree and the professional and
economic impact that it would have on my life, the lives of my family, and the lives of my
students. However, this goal of mine has remained a dream due to economic difficulties
that have plagued my family until recently. Due to a recent change in circumstances, I
believe now is my opportunity to seize the moment and take advantage of this nationally
accredited program. Teaching is and has always been a great passion in my life.
Therefore, pursuing a Masters in TESOL would be the best decision I could ever make,
especially at a university located in the United States. I chose Greensboro College for the
reputation gained both nationally and internationally. Many glowing references were given
in behalf of the college by the VIF organization (now Practice) and my colleagues who
also participated in the international faculty program and pursued graduate degrees in
TESOL from Greensboro College.
During my studies at Greensboro college, I expect to gain more experience in effective
teaching and improve upon my classroom creativity to keep my current and future
students fully engaged in the learning process.

I am a goal-driven and determined person who can achieve anything I put my mind to. I
have much to offer both my classmates and the university by demonstrating a passion for
learning and for the field of education, a relentless motivation to overcome challenges,
and the desire to strive for excellence. I have learned that life is not always easy and
something worth having is not and should not be easy to obtain. In order to achieve
something worthwhile, one must be willing to make a persistent effort. The benefits of
having individuals like me who have learned English as a second language participate in
courses alongside native speakers of English are numerous. An example of this is that I
am able to provide insight on matters related to the multi-lingual mind and the specific
challenges that ELL and ESL students face with the reading and comprehension of
English literature.

Fast paced and accelerated coursework will not present a problem for me as I am skilled
at prioritizing tasks and avoiding procrastination. I have had to juggle multiple
responsibilities in my personal and secular lives for many years. My life experiences have
taught me the need and the benefits of managing my time wisely. I recognize the need
to tackle and complete all individual and group work immediately in order to allow
appropriate time for revisions and thoughtful reflection. The terms fast paced and
accelerated do not have to carry a negative connotation if one is truly committed to the
idea of self-improvement and championing the education of our international community
of students.
