Prayer for Good Health

Blessed are You, the Lord our God,

King of the Universe,
Who fashioned man with wisdom
And created within him many openings and cavities.

It is obvious and known before Your Throne of Glory

That if but one of them were to be ruptured,
Or but one of them were to be blocked
It would be impossible to survive and stand before You.

In the merit of my appreciation for Your wondrous works,

May You grant me good health and long life.

Prayer for the Sick

Almighty, Master of the Universe,

my God and the God of my forefathers:

May it be Your Will that You speedily send

a complete recovery from Heaven,
a healing of the body and a
healing of the spirit to:

[the name of the person]

the son/daughter of
[the person's mother's name]

amongst all of the sick of

the Children of Israel.

Prayer for Livelihood

It is You, the Lord our G-d,

Who nourishes, sustains, and supports
every living creature.

Provide me with my allotment of bread,

and bring forth food for me
and all members of my household
before I have need for it.

May we be supported
in contentment but not in pain, in a
permissible but not a forbidden manner,
in honor but not in disgrace,
for life and for peace.

May we be supported
from the flow of blessing and success,
and from the flow of the Heavenly spring,
so that I will be able to do Your will,
engage in Your Torah,
and fulfill Your commandments.

Make me not dependent on the generosity of other people.

And may there be fulfilled in me the verse that states, "You open up Your hand and satisfy
the desire of every living thing" (Psalms 145:16).
And also the verse that states,
"Cast Your burden upon God
and He will support you" (Psalms 55:23).

"Shema Yisrael"

"Hear O Israel"

The Shema is the Jewish national "pledge of allegiance" - the testimony of belief in One God.
Traditionally, it is said three times a day - morning, evening, and before going to sleep. When
the time comes to leave this world, the Jew aspires to have the Shema as the parting words
on his lips - a final affirmation of belief, trust, and love of God.

Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God,

The Lord is One.

Blessed is the name of His glorious kingdom

Forever and ever.

And you shall love the Lord your God,

With all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your possessions.
And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart.

And you shall teach them to your children

And speak of them when you sit in your home,
When you walk up the way,
When you lie down and when you rise up.

And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand
And they shall be Tefillin between your eyes.
And you shall write them
On the doorposts of your homes
And upon your gates.

Prayer for Livelihood

It is You, the Lord our G-d,

Who nourishes, sustains, and supports
every living creature.

Provide me with my allotment of bread,

and bring forth food for me
and all members of my household
before I have need for it.

May we be supported
in contentment but not in pain, in a
permissible but not a forbidden manner,
in honor but not in disgrace,
for life and for peace.

May we be supported
from the flow of blessing and success,
and from the flow of the Heavenly spring,
so that I will be able to do Your will,
engage in Your Torah,
and fulfill Your commandments.

Make me not dependent on the generosity of other people.

And may there be fulfilled in me the verse that states, "You open up Your hand and satisfy
the desire of every living thing" (Psalms 145:16).
And also the verse that states,
"Cast Your burden upon God
and He will support you" (Psalms 55:23).

Psalm 17, You Are a Consolation(Adapted)
O God,
You are a consolation to Your creatures,
for in moments of forgetting
we but call to mind Your care,
and we are comforted.
When we hope no more,
a pattern in the snow
reminds us of Your lovingkindness.
Your dawns give us confidence,
and sleep is a friend.
Our sorrows dissipate
in the presence of an infants smile,
and our Elders wise words
revive our willtowish.
Your hints are everywhere,
Your signals in the most remote of places.
You are here,
and we fail words to say,
Mah Tov!
How good our breath,
our rushing energies,
our silences of love.

Psalm 121 a song of ascent: (Adapted)

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
What is the source of my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Maker of the heavens and the earth.
God will not allow you to stumble,
Your Guardian will not slumber.
Indeed, the Guardian of Israel
neither slumbers nor sleeps.
The Lord is your Guardian,
your shelter at your side.
The sun will not smite you by day
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will guard you against all evil;
God will guard you, body and soul.
The Lord will guard your going out
and your coming home, now and forever.

Lord, praise be to You for the rhythm.
We praise You for the beat of sound,
the beat of the heart,
the beat of the drums.
We praise You for the clapping hands,
the tapping of toes,
the snapping of fingers and
the nod of the head.
We praise You for the jumping of rope,
for the skipping, hopping, running
and walking.
We praise You for the rhythm of seasons,
for hot noons and cool nights,
for the sunset and the sunrise,
for the new moon and the half moon.
We praise You for the rhythm of
the cycles of the seasons,
the cycles of the engines,
the cycles of the octaves,
the cycles of the seed, and
the cycles of the spirit.
Lord, we praise You for birth and rebirth,
for childhood and parenthood,
for life and life to come.

For these we give thanks

O God, to whom we come so often with needs to be
satisfied, we come to You now in gratitude for what we
already have and are.
For gifts beyond deserving or counting, we give thanks.
You have given us the ability to become more than we
have been, the urge to be more than we are, and a
gnawing hunger to attain heights only dimly imagined.
For the power to grow, we give thanks.
You have endowed us with the capacity to discern the
difference between right and wrong; and You have
enabled us to follow the right, to avoid the wrong.
For the power to choose, we give thanks.
You have blessed us with the ability to fashion things of
beauty, to sing new songs, to spin new tales, to add to
the treasurehouse of human civilization.
For the power to create, we give thanks.
You have equipped us with the yearning to commune with
You, to bring You our fears and our dreams, our hurts and
our joys, our guilt and our gratitude; to share hopes and
concerns with You and with others.

For the power to pray, we give thanks.

You have fortified us with the ability to rise above
disappointment and failure, to go on after we have been
bruised and bereaved, to refuse to submit to defeat and
despair.
For the power to hope, we give thanks.
You have enlarged us with the ability to cherish others, to
make their lives as dear to us as our very own, to share
their hopes, to feel their hurts, to know their hearts.
For the power to love, we give thanks.
You have ennobled us with the strength to overcome our
faults, to mend our ways, and to answer the summons to
turn to You with all our heart and soul.
For the possibilities of renewal, we give thanks!
How fitting it is to praise You,
In poem, in song, in melody.
You perform so many wonders,
O God who lives eternally.

All praise to You eternal Source of all blessin

created the light and the darkness too. And
in all that You

To Fashion Holiness
O God Show us how to fashion holiness from waste,
Discovering sparks in the broken shells of people beaten
down by
circumstance and mired in the boredom of hollowness.
Teach us to take the neutral substance of reality and
create the sublime, forming shapes of blessings with a
sacred touch.
Instruct us in sympathy, so we may learn to tear away at
hopelessness and the groan and oy of despair by stories,
jokes, and astonishing embraces.
Remove shallowness from our lives and destroy
senselessness, that we may discover Your plan and fulfill
Your purposes.
Give us insight and vision, and we will perform signs and
wonders in the sight of all humanity as You Yourself once did in
the Land of Egypt and at Sinai.
Show us Life in all its glory, and we will glorify Your name,
here and now, everywhere and forever.
Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God, the Lord is
One Blessed be His name;
His glorious kingdom is forever and ever.

Psalm 61414
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments, according to the sheminith style;1515 a psalm
of David.
6:1 Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger!
Do not discipline me in your raging fury!1616
6:2 Have mercy on me,1717 Lord, for I am frail!
Heal me, Lord, for my bones are shaking!1818
sn Take shelter. Taking shelter in the Lord is an idiom for seeking his protection. Seeking his protection presupposes and
even demonstrates the subjects loyalty to the Lord. In the psalms those who take shelter in the Lord are contrasted with
the wicked and equated with those who love, fear and serve the Lord (Pss 5:11-12; 31:17-20; 34:21-22).
tn The prefixed verbal form is a jussive of wish or prayer. The psalmist calls on God to reward his faithful followers.
tn Or perhaps more hyperbolically, forever.
tn As in the preceding line, the prefixed verbal form is a jussive of wish or prayer.
tn Heb put a cover over them. The verb form is a Hiphil imperfect from
( sakhakh, cover, shut off). The imperfect
expresses the psalmists wish or request.
tn Heb the lovers of your name. The phrase refers to those who are loyal to the Lord. See Pss 69:36; 119:132; Isa 56:6.
tn
The vav ( )with prefixed verbal form following the vo
litional shelter them indicates purpose or result (so that thosemay rejoice).
tn Or For.
tn Or bless. The imperfect verbal forms here and in the next line highlight how God characteristically rewards and
protects the godly.
1
0 tn Or innocent. The singular form is used here in a collective or representative sense.
1111 tn Heb surround. In 1 Sam 23:26 the verb describes how Saul and his men hemmed David in as they chased him.
1212 tn Heb him. The singular form is used here in a collective or representative sense and is thus translated them.
1313 tn Or with favor (cf. NRSV). There is no preposition before the noun in the Hebrew text, nor is there a pronoun
attached. Favor here stands by metonymy for Gods defensive actions on behalf of the one whom he finds acceptable.
14 sn Psalm 6. The psalmist begs the Lord to withdraw his anger and spare his life. Having received a positive response to
his prayer, the psalmist then confronts his enemies and describes how they retreat.
11
55 tn Themeaning of the Hebrew term ( shminit, sh
eminith) is uncertain; perhaps it refers to a particular style of music. See 1 Chr 15:21.
1616 sn The implication is that the psalmist has sinned, causing God to discipline him by bringing a life-threatening illness
upon him (see vv. 2-7).
1717 tn Or show me favor.
11 8 8 tn Normally the verb ( bahal) refers to an emotional
response and means tremble with fear, be terrified (see vv. 3, 10). Perhaps here the bones are viewed as the seat of
the psalmists emotions. However, the verb may describe one of the effects of his physical ailment, perhaps a fever. In
6:3 I am absolutely terrified,19
and you, Lord how long will this continue?20

all night long I drench my bed in tears;25
my tears saturate the cushion beneath me.26

they grow weak2929 because of all my enemies.30
6:8 Turn back from me, all you who behave wickedly,3131
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping!32
6:9 The Lord has heard my appeal for mercy;
the Lord has accepted3333 my prayer.

6:10 May all my enemies be humiliated and absolutely terrified!

May they turn back and be suddenly humiliated!
Psalm 7
A musical composition by David, which he sang to the L ord concerning a Benjaminite named Cush.
7:1 O Lord my God, in you I have taken shelter.
Deliver me from all who chase me! Rescue me!
7:2 Otherwise they will rip me to shreds like a lion;
they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me.10
7:3 O Lord my God, if I have done what they say,1111
or am guilty of unjust actions,1212
7:4 or have wronged my ally,1313
or helped his lawless enemy,1414
7:5 may an enemy relentlessly chase1515 me1616 and catch me;1717
may he trample me to death1818
and leave me lying dishonored in the dust.1919 (Selah)
7:6 Stand up angrily,20 Lord!
Rise up with raging fury against my enemies!2121
Wake up for my sake and execute the judgment you have decreed for them!22

7:7 The countries are assembled all around you;

take once more your rightful place over them!
7:8 The Lord judges the nations.
Vindicate me, Lord, because I am innocent,
because I am blameless, O Exalted One!
7:9 May the evil deeds of the wicked come to an end!
But make the innocent secure,10
O righteous God,
you who examine1111 inner thoughts and motives!1212
7:10 The Exalted God is my shield,1313
the one who delivers the morally upright.1414

7:11 God is a just judge;
he is angry throughout the day.1515

Psalm 8
For the music director, according to the gittith style; a psalm of David.
8:1 O Lord, our Lord,
how magnificent is your reputation throughout the earth!
You reveal your majesty in the heavens above!
8:2 From the mouths of children and nursing babies
you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries,
so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.
8:3 When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,
8:4 Of what importance is the human race,10 that you should notice1111 them?
Of what importance is mankind,1212 that you should pay attention to them,1313
8:5 and make them a little less than the heavenly beings?1414
sn Psalm 8. In this hymn to the sovereign creator, the psalmist praises Gods majesty and marvels that God has given
mankind dominion over the created order.
tn The precise meaning of
the Hebrew term is un
certain; it probably refers to a musical style or type of instrument.
tn The plural form of the title emphasizes the L ords absolute sovereignty.
tn Or awesome; or majestic.
tn Heb name, which here stands metonymically for Gods reputation.
tc Heb which, give, your majesty on the heavens. The verb form ( tnah; an imperative?) is corrupt. The form
should be emended to a second masculine singular perfect ) , natatah) or imperfect (
, titen) form. The introductory
( asher, which) can be taken as a relative pronoun (you
)
who) or as a causal conjunction (because). One may literally translate, you who [or because you] place your majesty
upon the heavens. For other uses of the phrase place majesty upon see Num 27:20 and 1 Chr 29:25.
tn Heb you establish strength because of your foes. The meaning of the statement is unclear. The present translation
follows the reading of the LXX which has praise (, ai nos)
in place of strength ( , oz); cf. NIV, NCV, NLT.
tn Heb to cause to cease an enemy and an avenger. The singular forms are collective. The Hitpael participle of
(naqam) also occurs in Ps 44:16.
tn Heb when I see your heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and stars which you established. The verb [and]
see is understood by ellipsis in the second half of the verse.
1
0 tn Heb What is man[kind]? The singular noun
(enosh, man) is used here in a collective sense and refers to the human race.
1111 tn Heb remember him.
1212 tn Heb and the son of man. The phrase son of man is used here in a collective sense and refers to human beings.
For other uses of the phrase in a collective or representative manner, see Num 23:19; Ps 146:3; Isa 51:12.
1313 tn The two imperfect verbal forms in v. 4 describe Gods characteristic activity.
14 tn Heb and you make him lack a little from [the] gods [or God]. The Piel form of ( ) khasar, to decrease, to be
devoid) is used only here and in Eccl 4:8, where it means to deprive, to cause to be lacking. The prefixed verbal form
with vav ( )consecutive either carries on the characteristic nuance
You grant mankind1515 honor and majesty;1616
8:6 you appoint them to rule over your creation;1717
you have placed1818 everything under their authority,19
8:7 including all the sheep and cattle,
as well as the wild animals,20
8:8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea
and everything that moves through the currents2121 of the seas.
8:9 O Lord, our Lord,22
how magnificent2323 is your reputation2424 throughout the earth!25

Psalms
Psalm 9
For the music director; according to the alumoth-labben style; a psalm of David.
9:1 I will thank the Lord with all my heart!
I will tell about all your amazing deeds!
9:2 I will be happy and rejoice in you!
I will sing praises to you, O sovereign One!
9:3 When my enemies turn back,
they trip and are defeated before you.
9:4 For you defended my just cause;
from your throne you pronounced a just decision.
9:5 You terrified the nations with your battle cry;
you destroyed the wicked;
you permanently wiped out all memory of them.10
sn Psalm 9. The psalmist, probably speaking on behalf of Israel or Judah, praises God for delivering him from hostile nations.
He celebrates Gods sovereignty and justice, and calls on others to join him in boasting of Gods greatness. Many Hebrew
mss and the ancient Greek version (LXX) combine Psalms 9 and 10 into a single psalm.
tc The meaning of
the Hebrew term ( almut) is un

certain.
Some mss divide the forminto ( al mut, accord

ing to the death [of the son]), while the LXX assumes a read ing

( al alumot, according to alumoth). The phrase

probably refers to a particular tune or musical style.
tn The cohortative forms in vv. 1-2 express the psalmists resolve to praise God publicly.
tn Heb [to] your name, O Most High. Gods name refers metonymically to his divine characteristics as suggested by his
name, in this case Most High. This divine title ( ,

elyo/) pictures God as the exalted ruler of the universe who vindicates the innocent and judges the wicked. See especially
Ps 47:2.
tn Or perish; or die. The imperfect verbal forms in this line either emphasize what typically happens or describe vividly
the aftermath of a recent battle in which the Lord defeated the psalmists enemies.
tn Heb for you accomplished my justice and my legal claim.
tn Heb you sat on a throne [as] one who judges [with] righteousness. The perfect verbal forms in v. 4 probably allude to a
recent victory (see vv. 5-7). Another option is to understand the verbs as describing what is typical (you defendyou sit on
a throne).
tn
The verb ( ) gaar) is often understood to mean re
buke and in this context taken to refer to the Lords rebuke of the nations. In some cases it is apparent that scolding or
threatening is in view (see Gen 37:10; Ruth 2:16; Zech 3:2). However, in militaristic contexts this translation is inadequate,
for the verb refers in this setting to the warriors battle cry, which terrifies and paralyzes the enemy. See A. Caquot, TDOT
3:53, and note the use of the verb in Pss 68:30; 106:9; and Nah 1:4, as well as the related noun in Job 26:11; Pss 18:15;
76:6; 104:7; Isa 50:2; 51:20; 66:15.
tn The singular form is collective (note nations and their name).
In the psalms the wicked ( ) , rshaim) are typi
cally proud, practical atheists (Ps 10:2, 4, 11) who hate Gods commands, commit sinful deeds, speak lies and slander (Ps
50:16-20), and cheat others (Ps 37:21). In this context the hostile nations who threaten Israel/Judah are in view.
1
0tn Heb their name you wiped out forever and ever. The three perfect verbal forms in v. 5 probably refer to a recent
victory (definite past or present perfect use), although they might express what is typical (characteristic use).
9:6 The enemys cities have been reduced to permanent ruins;1111
you destroyed their cities;1212
all memory of the enemies has perished.1313
9:7 But the Lord1414 rules1515 forever;
he reigns in a just manner.1616
9:8 He judges the world fairly;
he makes just legal decisions for the
nations.1717
9:9 Consequently1818 the Lord provides safety for the oppressed;19
he provides safety in times of trouble.20
9:10 Your loyal followers trust in you,2121
for you, Lord, do not abandon those who seek your help.22
9:11 Sing praises to the Lord, who rules23 in Zion!
Tell the nations what he has done!2424
9:12 For the one who takes revenge against murderers took notice of the
oppressed;25
