Purpose: Students know the location of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, its role in
absorbing ultraviolet radiation, and the way in which this layer varies both naturally and in
response to human activities.
Directions: The following tables show the number of new cases of skin cancer for all people,
males, and females living in Australia from 1982 to 2011. On the graph provided plot the
information. Each set of information should be plotted in a different color.
The X-axis should be the year. The Y-axis should by the number of new cases of skin cancer. Be
sure to label each axis and create a key to show which color each set of data is.
2. The Montreal Act was passed in 1987 to restrict the use of CFC in commercial
products. Based on the graph below, did the law reduce the amount of CFC
released into the atmosphere?
According to the graph, the amount of CFC was decreasing every year. Before
the law was used, the amount of CFC in the atmosphere was very high but
after the law, the amount of CFC continue decreeing in number.
3. Was the law successful? To answer this question, compare the rates of skin
cancer to the graph above of CFC release into the air.
No it wasnt because even though it can decrease the amount of CFC but the
skin cancer rate still increasing in number so it can reduce only the amount of
CFC in the atmosphere but cannot reduce the amount of skin cancer.
4. Why do you think rates of skin cancer continued to increase, even though the
amount of CFC being released into the atmosphere was decreased?
Because even though they can decrease the CFC being released into the
atmosphere but the CFC in the atmosphere did not disappear. CFC in the
atmosphere still floating and still causing the skin cancer.
