III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea)
- Prerequisite Skills
- The third-grade students know how to participate in a group.
- The third-grade students know how to behave when classmates are presenting information
to the class.
- The third- grade students know how to clean up after using art materials.
- Key Vocabulary
- Compare
- When you compare two or more things, you find ways they are alike.
- Contrast
- When you contrast two or more things, you find ways they are different.
- Character Traits.
- physical traits
- actions / emotions (witty, creative, independent, friendly)
- Big Idea
- Understand the similarities and differences about characters helps readers make text - text
connections and build background knowledge.
- Content
- In this lesson, students will practice comparing and contrasting two different characters written
by the same author. The teacher will begin by explaining what comparing and contrasting means
then moving into reading both books. The students will then have the opportunity to create a
character profile with a group. When they are finished drawing and writing about their character,
they will get into a larger group and create a Venn Diagram analyzing the two characters. The
lesson will finish by students presenting their work to the class.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
- "Today, we will be comparing and contrasting characters from two Oliver Jeffer books. Does
anyone know what comparing and contrasting means?"
- The teacher will begin by making an anchor chart with the studentsgoing over the definitions
of compare and contrast.
B. Development
- When the anchor chart is complete, the teacher will now briefly talk about character traits.
- "While I read these books aloud, I want you all to be thinking about how both main
characters (teacher will say names of characters) are alike and different."
- The teacher will read both books aloud.
- When the teacher is finished, they will split the students into 6 groups of 4.
- 3 groups will have one character and 3 groups the other.
- The groups will get one piece of anchor chart paper, draw their character and
around their drawing, they will write different characteristics they remember from
the story.
- Students will have 15 minutes to work on their character profiles.
- Once the 15 minutes is up, the teacher will pair opposite groups together to from 3
groups of 8.
- The teacher will have the students discuss the similarities and differences about their
two characters. While they discuss, they will fill out a Venn Diagram.
- While holding up a Venn Diagram sample, "One circle is for the similarities.
So, over one of the circles write a characters name. Over the other circle, please write the
other characters name. There, you will write the differences of your characters. So, if
.. is creative, but . is not, you will only write it in .'s circle. But, if the two
characters share a trait, you will write it where the circle's cross."
- "Please have at least 3 traits in each part of the Venn Diagram."
- The teacher will give students 15 minutes to work on Venn Diagrams.
C. Closure
- The students will present their Venn Diagrams and discuss what were the similarities and
differences in the characters.
D. Accommodations / Differentiation -
- Students will work in preassigned groups.
- Students will be assigned specific characters based on the reading levels of the group.
- Environment
- Noise will be monitored for students who need support in concentration.
E. Assessment/Evaluation plan
1. Formative
- Venn Diagram Checklist
2. Summative
- There is no summative assessment for this lesson.
V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of States Objectives (Reflection on students performance written
after lesson is taught, includes remediation for students who failed to meet acceptable level of achievement)
