What well learn

Today, we will start a new unit, starting in 19th century Britain. We will learn about the
concept of constitutional monarchy, and explore the distribution of power between the
monarchy and the parliament. We will also discuss how Britains parliament originally left a
lot of people with no voice, and how that situation changed thanks to parliamentary
reforms.

By the end of this class, you should be able to

Define "constitutional monarchy."
Describe how reformers wanted to change the British Parliament in the late 1800s.

How well get there

Why this matters

The government we have in the United States didnt happen by accident. The founders of
our country felt their home countries were unjust, and so they created a new country
designed around principles they deemed fair. In the same way, in 19th century Britain many
thought the system was unfair, so they pushed for reforms. We need to learn about these
successful eras of change so we can have a better understanding of how to push for change
in our current era.
