Scenario
You are working in Health and Social Care as a Health Care Assistant (HCA). One of your clients,
Peter is a 42 year old man with Cerebral Palsy and is diagnosed with a mental illness Bi-polar
Affective Disorder. The Cerebral Palsy affects his hearing and use of lower limbs. He is in receipt of
24 hour support and copes well with his impairment in general, undertaking various activities at a local
theatre group and also goes swimming every day. He is very capable intellectually and has requested
that you provide him with a summary report of recent academically informed research on the theme of
how perceptions of Disability have changed in recent years and Government policies that have made
a difference to the lives of Disabled people in relation to accommodation, work, rights and
safeguarding.
1.1 Analyse concepts of health, disability, and illness and behaviour in relation to users of health and
social care. [P1.1]
1.2 Assess and discuss how perceptions about specific needs have changed. Link your answers to
the case study. [P1.2]
1.3 Analyse the impact of past and present legislations, social policies, society and culture on the
ways that services are made available for individuals such as Peter and his family. Cite specific
legislations and link them to your analysis [P1.3, M1]
You must include in the information pack a reflective analysis to show how the knowledge you gained
in Unit 10: Safeguarding in Health and Social Care is linked/related to Unit: 16 Understanding
Specific Needs in Health and Social Care. Using AC 1.3 above on past and present legislations,
reflect on the link of safeguarding legislations , policies and the effect of culture, values on individuals
who have been victim of abuse or service users who are disabled that are found in Unit 10.
To achieve M1, judgements made about legislations social policies, society and culture and relate them to
the case study and analysis of the impact they have on the way services are made available for individuals
with specific needs must be demonstrated.
Scenario
You are asked to produce a brochure on social care services and systems that support individuals
with specific needs.
Anis a 60 years old man had a brain Haemorrhage at his late 40s. He had three brain surgeries which
left him paralysed to the right side of his body and also with permanent speech impairment. At a later
stage he regained his partial speech. His wife Nilam and his daughter Nafis are his only company at
home. Continuous caring of Anis made Nilam isolated from her personal and social life. She was
recently diagnosed with hypothyroid disease. Her continuous caring role and the mothers
responsibility to Nafis significantly contributing on her already developed depressed condition.
Domiciliary care service of her choice provides workers three times in a week to care for her. One day
a man comes in the morning to provide bathing services and other two days they come to support her
with household chores. Nilam is taking 4 different types of medication and Nafis is extremely busy
with her studies and her extra caring role for her parents. You are asked to produce a brochure on
social care services and systems that support individuals with specific needs.
2.1 You must analyse the different care needs of individuals such as Anis, his wife Nilam and his
daughter Nafis with specific needs. [P2.1, M2]
2.2 In the second part of your brochure you should explain current systems for supporting individuals
such as Anis, his wife and his daughter in the case study. [P2.2]
2.3 Finally, you should evaluate the services available in a chosen locality for individuals with specific
needs. [P2.3, D1]
To achieve M2 relevant theories have been applied when analysing physical needs, social needs,
emotional needs , language needs, intellectual needs , spiritual needs of individuals such as Anis, Nilam
and Nafis in the case study.
To achieve D1, conclusions have been arrived through synthesis of ideas and are justified when evaluating
with examples of services available in a specific locality for individuals with specific needs.
A brochure is a marketing material, in the present case, which contains social care systems and
support available for the service users with special needs
Your response includes needs of the users, current system and support available to meet the needs
and an evaluation of current services in a specific locality. You can include images and diagrams in
your brochure, though important to explain these. Remember that you will need to include secondary
references to quality academic texts
To produce a brochure you need to use Microsoft Word as your chosen application
Task 3: LO3 Understand approaches and intervention strategies that support individuals with
specific needs.
Scenario
You have been commissioned by a Health and Social Care journal to write an academic article
entitled After the Bournewood Case contemporary approaches to Learning Difficulty/Older
Peoples Care and Support/Challenging Behaviour. A link to the Bournewood Case is available at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz5Ecovjs4w or in your unit on the ICON VLE.
The editors have asked you to provide examples of good and/or improved practice in relation to
specific needs in Health and Social Care this can include Learning Difficulty, Older Peoples Care
Needs, Challenging Behaviour and other specific needs covered on the course. They have indicated
that particular attention should be paid to covering the significance in recent and emerging
approaches to supporting individuals with Specific Needs and also when possible indicate their
overall impact.
3.1 The first section of the guidance you must explain the approaches and interventions available to
support individuals with specific needs. [P3.1]
3.2 In the next section of the guidance you must evaluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies
used for service users with specific needs. [P3.2, D2]
3.3 Finally, in the guidance discuss the potential impact of emerging developments on support for
individuals with specific needs. [P3.3, M3]
To achieve M3, a coherent discussion of concepts about the potential impact of emerging developments
with examples given for the intended audience must be demonstrated on support with specific needs.
To achieve D2, substantial activities and investigations have been planned managed and organised and
your answer will demonstrate that you have looked at both sides of the arguments and give examples of the
effectiveness of intervention strategies used for users with specific needs.
Mr. JC is an 85 year old religious man and has been attending Day Care to reduce his isolation in
order to maintain a stable mental health condition. A severe stroke few years back left him with slow
mobility and partial speech impairment.
He has a habit of using specific chairs in the lounge and in the dining hall. His food intake is also
specific in terms of choosing a specific piece from a whole fish, which the day centre provider
purchases from a local fish market. Any change of these choices causes him to become agitated and
angry.
When he is angry he becomes very aggressive and starts swearing at staff members using extremely
degrading words in his native tongue. His aggressive attitude over time towards the staff has
significantly increased. He believes that apart from the manager everyone has bad manners and also
that everyone including the other service users has issues against him.
The care staff team became very unhappy due to his anger and aggressive behaviour. The social
worker was contacted to review his case. He became angry while the meeting with the social worker
was in progress. The social worker understood the situation and medical support was requested.
It is the responsibility of the manager to defuse the dissatisfaction of the members of staff and also to
ensure that the best possible service is provided to Mr. JC. It is expected that you will produce a fact
sheet for AC 4.1; 4.2; 4.3 which will include the different concepts of challenging behaviour, and
include the impact of challenging behaviour and also analyse strategies.
4.1 In the first section produce a fact sheet that will explain different concepts of challenging
behaviour. [P4.1]
4.2 The second section you must describe the potential impact of challenging behaviour on health
and social care organisations. [P4.2]
4.3 Finally, in the third section of the fact sheet, you must analyse strategies for working with
challenging behaviours associated with specific needs. [P4.3, D3]
You must include in your fact sheet a reflective analysis to show how the knowledge gained in Unit 1:
Communicating in Health and Social Care Organisations is linked to Unit 16 Understanding Specific
Needs in Health and Social Care. For example using AC 4.3, in Unit 16 reflect on how communication
can also impact challenging behaviours positively/negatively and how it is linked to AC 1.4 in Unit 1.
You may have to go back to your Unit 1 and review AC 1.4
To achieve D3, your evidence should demonstrate strategies relating to working with challenging behaviour
associated with specific needs such as found in the case study.
The point of a fact sheet is to get the reader to do something. More information than you need to
convince them is a waste of the reader's time and risks losing their attention.

Plagiarism is presenting somebody elses work as your own. It includes copying information directly
from the Web or books without referencing the material; submitting joint coursework as an individual
effort.
Collusion is copying another students coursework; stealing coursework from another student and
submitting it as your own work.
5. Submission
a. Initial submission of coursework to the tutors is compulsory in each unit of the course.
b. Student must check their assignments on ICON VLE with plagiarism software Turnitin to make sure
the similarity index for their assignment stays within the College approved level. A student can check
the similarity index of their assignment three times in the Draft Assignment submission point located
in the home page of the ICON VLE.
c. All Final coursework must be submitted to the Final submission point into the unit (not to the Tutor).
A student would be allowed to submit only once and that is the final submission.

Resubmission.
6. Good practice
a. Make backup of your work in different media (hard disk, memory stick etc.) to avoid distress for loss or
damage of your original copy.
Analyse: Break an issue or topic into smaller parts by looking in depth at each part. Support each
part with arguments and evidence for and against (Pros and cons).
Critically Evaluate/Analyse: When you critically evaluate you look at the arguments for and
against an issue. You look at the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments. This could be
from an article you read in a journal or from a text book.
Discuss: When you discuss you look at both sides of a discussion. You look at both sides of the
arguments. Then you look at the reason why it is important (for) then you look at the reason why it
is important (against).
Explain: When you explain you must say why it is important or not important.
Evaluate: When you evaluate you look at the arguments for and against an issue.
Identify: When you identify you look at the most important points.
