DeclanDonnellan(born4August1953)[1]isanEnglishfilm/stagedirectorandauthor.HecofoundedtheCheek
byJowltheatrecompanywithNickOrmerodin1981.In1992,hereceivedanhonorarydegreefromtheUniversity
ofWarwickandin2004hewasmadeaChevalierdel'OrdredesArtsetdesLettresforhisworkinFrance.[2]In
2010,hewasmadeanhonoraryfellowofGoldsmiths'College,UniversityofLondon.[3]

Biography
Donnellan[4]wasborninManchesterandgrewupinEaling,London.HewaseducatedatStBenedict'sSchool,
EalingandQueens'College,Cambridge,wherehereadEnglishandLaw.AfterleavingCambridge,hewascalled
totheBaratMiddleTemplein1978.

HefoundedCheekbyJowlwithNickOrmerodin1981.[5]Since2006thecompanyhasbeenpartoftheBarbican's
InternationalTheatreProgram(BITE)resultingincoproductionsofTheChangeling(2006),Cymbeline(2007)
andTroilusandCressida(2008).[5][6][7]

FortheRoyalShakespeareCompanyhehasdirectedTheSchoolforScandal,KingLear(Academy2002)and
GreatExpectations.HehasalsodirectedLeCidfortheAvignonFestival,FalstafffortheSalzburgFestivalandthe
balletofRomeoandJulietfortheBolshoiTheatreinMoscow.OtherworkinRussiaincludesTheWinter'sTalefor
theMalyDramaTheatreofSaintPetersburg.[8]

In2000heformedacompanyofactorsinMoscow,undertheauspicesofTheChekhovFestival,whose
productionsincludeBorisGodunov,TwelfthNightandThreeSisters.Hewroteaplay,LadyBetty,whichwas
performedbyCheekbyJowlin1989.HehasalsoadaptedDon'tFoolwithLovebyAlfreddeMusset,Antigoneby
Sophocles,TheMandatebyNikolaiErdmanandMasqueradebyMikhailLermontov.FirstpublishedinRussianin
2001,Donnellan'sbook,TheActorandtheTarget,waspublishedinEnglishin2002(reprinted2005),aswellas
French,SpanishandDanish.[9]
