EDITORIAL
In this issue we are pleased to introduce abstracts of papers taken from the Chinese Journal
of Mechanical Engineering. This will be a regular feature in the International Journal of
Mechanical Sciences and will provide an opportunity for our readers to become acquainted
with current work being conducted in China in fields relevant to our journal.
The abstracts have been compiled by Professor T. X. Yu from the Department of
Mechanics at Beijing University, who will be joining our Editorial Advisory Board.
Professor Yu will be replacing Professor R. Wang, who has served on the Board for many
years and whose many contributions we gratefully acknowledge.

CJ 88-01. The computer-aided design of cylindrical dies for pressing sheet metals. By Yu
TONGXI, ZHANG LIANGCHIand WANG REN (Department of Mechanics, Peking University,
Beijing, China). Chinese J. Mech. Engng 24, No. 1 (March 1988), pp. 1-7.
An idea for the computer-aided design of cylindrical dies for pressing sheet metals is
proposed to meet the requirement of compensating for the springback of workpieces in
the stage of die design. To implement this idea, some new algorithms are adopted:
(1) Lagrange interpolation for treating the true stress-strain relationship of arbitrary
materials; (2) piecewise curve fitting by splines in obtaining the curvature function; (3) least
square collocation-Powell method in solving non-linear differential equations. Thus, the
final shape of a die can easily be obtained by applying this procedure, provided that the
geometry of workpiece and the material are specified. By giving the design of a U-shape
die for pressing 2024-T4 aluminium sheets as an example, it is shown that the idea may
be extended to more complicated problems.
CJ 88-02. A study on kinetic accuracy of planetary gear trains. By WANG RENSHU (Harbin
University of Science and Technology, Harbin, China). Chinese J. Mech. Engng 24, No. 1
(March 1988), pp. 15-19.
A further study of the kinetic accuracy of planetary gear trains is made to propose a
general method for calculating the coefficient of speed fluctuation of planetary gear trains.
The relationship between its efficiency and its kinetic accuracy is also illustrated. Results
in this paper will be useful in the design of planetary gear trains.
