As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Verbally explain methods of coping when feeling frustrated
2. Recall and share emotional responses to different scenarios and representing this through ICT

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

Laptop/Smart Board for YouTube video clip This activity is open ended so it suits many
1 x iPad per student (4 iPads per group) students abilities and forces them to be creative
1 x A3 poster paper per student (4 per group) and use critical thinking whilst ensuring the
individual academic command of each student
5 x coping cards per student (20 per group)

closer to the teacher if this assist them to listen
and make sure they stay on task.

Students who are excelling are likely to become


bored and distract other classmates so it is
essential to keep an eye on them and provide
more challenging materials and questions

Time Motivation and Introduction:
*Before
lesson Before lesson starts, place QR codes out around the
begins classroom with 4 x coping cards blue tacked too the wall
beside them
Place A3 poster card and glue sticks on students desk (4 x
per group)
Plug in laptop/computer and load video and ensure
8.00am projector/smart board is working:

1) Gather children on the mat and refresh their minds on the


emotions that have previously been taught (happy, sad,
tired)
2) Introduce new topic by saying: today we are going to talk
about the emotion frustration, does anyone know what it
means to be frustrated? *Allow children to have a
reasonable amount of time to process and think about the
question that is being asked. Then choose a student who is
raising their hand and not calling out.
3) If the childs interpretation is correct then praise, if the
response is not completely right then support and praise
and respond by saying nice try ___ thank you for having a
go but to feel frustrated means to feel upset or annoyed
because you may not be able to change something or achieve

4) Introduce and read story book: The Very Frustrated
Monster

6) Break students up into groups of 4

Activity 1:
1) Explain to students what QR codes are and how they can be
used (demonstrate with the iPad multiple pre-prepared QR
codes with emotion faces)
2) Explain to students that today we are learning about the
emotion frustration and how we can calm our bodies down
and regulate this emotion through 5 different methods: (1.
Do some exercise, Move to a quiet place, take 10 deep
breaths, ask for help)
3) Instruct students to walk around the classroom in their
8.25am groups and find the hidden QR codes once they have found
the code they are too take a screenshot
4) Teacher then prints off the QR code findings
5) Children cut and paste the coping cards onto A3 card Checklists to recor
6) Children can then practice their calming down/coping observations of wea
strategies students

Activity 2: Frustration Scenarios


1) Start a group discussion about times we have felt
frustrated allow the children to converse and share their
experiences do not intervene unless children are heading
in the wrong direction or are not focused on the task
2) Explain to the students that we are going to create a story

emotions using the iPad application book creator
3) The children can each make their own story using voice
recordings and inserting images that can be taken from
class or from a copyright image website
4) Once the children have finished their story if comfortable

Conclusion:
1) Instruct the children to gather around the mat and ask the
following questions: who enjoyed todays activities? Can
somebody raise their hand and tell me what it means to be
frustrated? Can somebody please tell me 2 ways we can
regulate our emotions when we are feeling frustrated
*reinforce the idea by repeatedly asking questions and
going over the topic to ensure fluency and understanding.
2) Allow children to ask any final questions
3) Play short Youtube clip on the Smart Board (Sesame Street:
Frustrated)
4) Praise children for their efforts during todays lesson and
mention that next lesson we will be learning about the
emotion: Nervous
