Management of the Instructional Environment


Students will be seated in table groups based on their learning needs. The arrangement of students will
allow me to control misbehavior.

Students with special needs will be given a blank pre-made cootie catcher and will only be responsible for
creating the perimeter problems on the inside.

Activities/Procedures

ENGAGE- The teacher will post up the anchor charts on the board and greet the class. Tell students
today we will be talking about perimeter. Take guesses as to what they think perimeter is. As a table
group, huddle up and come up with 3 real-life examples where perimeter may be important to know. (3
minutes) One table at a time, have the groups share the situations they thought of out loud to the class,
and explain why it would be important to know the perimeter in that situation.
EXPLORE- Using the anchor charts, explain what perimeter is. Do an example on the board of the
perimeter of a square (present) and a tree (Christmas tree). Show students how to calculate the perimeter
of the Christmas shapes.
EXPLAIN- Give all students a ruler and have them walk around the classroom and calculate the
perimeter of different things around the room. The students will record the objects and measurements in
their math journals.
ELABORATE- The students will be creating their own Christmas themed cootie catcher. Step by step,
go through and create the cootie catcher.

Step 1. If you start with a standard sheet of paper you will need to make it square by folding one
corner over to the edge and cutting off the extra flap.
Step 2. Unfold it and you have a square.
Step 3. Fold the other corners and crease again. Unfold so you are back to the square.
Step 4. Next, fold each corner point into the center of the paper. Use the creases as a guide to help
keep your folds straight.
Step 5. With all four corners folded it should look like this.
Step 6. Next, flip the whole thing over to the other side (for some reason a lot of people miss this
step!)
Step 7. And fold all four corners points into the center again.
Step 8. Lift up the flaps and write the fortunes under here.
Step 10. Paste the Christmas figures on each of the triangles.
Step 11. Flip it over and paste a Christmas figure on each outside flap.
Step 12. Crease it along the flap lines, then flip it back over and stick your two thumbs and two
forefingers into each of the four flap pockets. Slip your fingers all the way up to the corners and then
bring your fingers together. Your fingers should press the center creases so that all 4 flaps meet at a
point in the center.

Students will come up with their own individual problems to put on the inside flaps. They will use these
cootie catchers as practice and to quiz other students in the class on the topic of perimeter.
EVALUATE- The students will be assessed based on the rubric which includes: completion of cootie
catcher, all 8 perimeter problems, and correct answers to each of the 8 problems. I will take up their
catchers and grade them after completion.
