Chemistry lab report

Objective: Using different amount of acid and base to launch the rocket to the goal that is set.

Abstract :
We use the chemical reaction to launch the rocket which are baking soda and vinegar.
The researcher did this experiment to study the designation and launching rocket by using
chemicals reaction which are baking soda and vinegar. The result is error because we are
unable to find right amount of baking soda and vinegar that will make the rocket go and hit the
target. Our rocket is only fly and land before target or land behind the target. Moreover, we
cannot measure the right amount of gas that is produce in the rocket because of the error.

Introduction and Background research

This experiment is about making a water rocket by using acid and base. As we
know that when we mix acid and base substance together it will produce a gas, so in
this experiment we are using baking soda or sodium-bicarbonate (NAHCO3) which is
base and vinegar(CH3COOH) which is acid then we will mix it together. The chemical
reaction will produce a gas Carbon-dioxide(CO2) which will increase the pressure of the
bottom that used to be the body of the rocket. Moreover, from the knowledge of
balancing equation and calculate the mole of an molecules, we used it and come up
with the simplest ratio of baking soda and vinegar that will be perfectly react with each
other and have nothing left.

Method
- First we design the rocket
- We use the 1.5 liters of soft drink to be the body of our rocket
- We cut 2 piece of foam and stick together, after that we use the sandpaper to make it
shape look like the aerodynamic wings
- Stick the wings to the rocket body
- Cut the paper and fold it in cone to make the head of the rocket
- Stick the clay inside the paper to increase the weight of the head of the rocket
- Tape it on the body of the rocket
- To built the launcher we use the wood to make it
- We pour the vinegar into the rocket
- We use the tissue paper to roll the baking soda because it will slow down the time that
baking soda will react with vinegar, so we have time to close the bottle by using the
cork-wine
- After that set the rocket on the launcher and wait it till the gas full and blow up the rocket
to fly
-

Calculation

Note: We use the standard concentration of the vinegar which are 4% per 100 ml of water. Also
we assume that reaction between acid and base is completely react with each other.

NaHCO3 + CH3COOH -----> C2H3OONa + H2O + CO2

20 grams 125 grams 4% by mass

20grams of NaHCO3 x 1 mol of NaHCO3/ 84 grams of NaHCO3 = 0.2 mol of NaHCO3

0.2 mol of NaHCO3 x 1 mol of CO2/ 1 mol of NaHCO3 = 0.2 mol of CO2
0x.2 mol of CO2 x 22.4 liters of CO2/ 1 mol of CO2 = 4.4 liters of CO2

5 gram of CH3COOH x 1 mol of CH3COOH/ 60 grams of CH3COOH =0.08 mol of CH3COOH

0.08 mol of CH3COOH x 1 mol of CO2/ 1 mol of CH3COOH = 0.08 mol of CO2
0.08 mol of CO2 x 22.4 liters of CO2/ 1 mol of CO2 = 1.7 liters of CO2
CH3COOH is the limiting agent.
Pressure that will because inside of the bottle
Formula: PV=nRT
P= (0.08 x 0.082 x 298) / 1.5
P= 1.3 ATM

Data table:

Our data table has an error because we change the rocket body and the wings, also
there are some time that our rocket did not lunch because the gas leak out.

Analysis
- The rocket went farther than our goal
- 20 grams of baking soda and 125 ml of vinegar is the best
condition to provide the longest distance.
- Change the rocket
- We have a lot of error in this experiment

Error
- We used different band of vinegar, so each band of the
vinegars have different concentration of the acid
- We change the bottle, so it change the mass of the rocket
and it can cause error. We have inaccurate of the calculation because we assume that
acid and base react with each other completely.
- We change the design of the rocket
- Some gas leak out when we try to shoot the rocket

Conclusion
Our rocket project result is failed. Our rocket is able to fly straight without curving
out, but we are not able to find right amount of the chemicals that will make it reach 20
meters. Our rocket only fly and land before or after the target, but not land exactly on
the target because we miss a lot of detail when we were doing the experiment and that
cause a lot of unacceptable error in our experiment.

Physics lab report

Objective: Design the acid base water rocket to make it fly to the goal accurately

Abstract :
We are launching the rocket by using the chemical reaction. We had design the rocket
by using a lot of physic theory to make the rocket fley and hit the goal that is set. However, our
rocket is not success because of our rocket design and uncontrollable factor like wind. We try to
use the aerodynamic theory to make the rocket fly farther, but it fail. Therefore, we need to
changed the rocket. Also we changed the wings too by using the future-board to make the
wings. It is work, but it is also an error of this experiment too.

Introduction and Background research

This experiment is about making the rocket by using pressure from gas that is
made from mixing acid and base together. Moreover, we use measurement, Newton's
law, free fall, Projectile, Impulse and momentum, and energy to make our rocket work
and hit the target.

Discussion of physic concepts

- Our group use the aerodynamic wings that will make the rocket take more air
time. This aerodynamic wings will make the wind on the top of the aerodynamic
wings go faster than underside of the wings, so the pressure on the top of it will
be less than the under of the wings and that will lift our rocket up. Also this wings
will lower the air-resistance.
- Energy, we using this concept of making this rocket by when we produce the gas
to the bottom we are increasing the potential energy, so when it releases the
potential energy the kinetic energy will make the rocket fly.
- Projectile motion is a combination of vertical and horizontal motions that are
completely independent of each other. There are 3 types of projectile motion
which are horizontal, Vertical, and Parabolic. Also any projectile motion can be
broken down to two simultaneous in any 2 perpendicular directions. These 2
motions are completely independent from each other. This is known as Principle
of Physical Independence of Motions
- Newton's laws of motion(1,2,3): First law: The rocket will be stopped by the
external force which is the air resistance. Second law: We increase the mass of
the rocket, so it increase the force Third Law: Action when release the gas will
cause the reaction that make our fly
- Measurement: We measure the volume of the rocket to calculate the perfect
amount of the chemical
- Impulse and momentum: We cant calculate the impulse and momentum
because we did not time the time

Analysis
- Our rocket go farther than the goal because of new mass of the rocket and new wings
- Our aerodynamic wings is fail when we launched it
- Our rocket has low accuracy because it is not hit the target at all
- Sometime wind blow our rocket, so it cannot reach the goal
- We have a lot of error
Error
- We can not calculate the momentum because
we did not measure the time
- We change the rocket and it make the mass
change
- We change the angle of our launcher
- The design of our wings because when we use
the aerodynamic wings it is are to control the
direction of the rocket.
- We change our wings. Also we change the amount of wings too, so it might cause a lot
of error.
- The wind that blow our rocket

Conclusion:
Our experiment of our rocket project is failed. There are many factor that causes error
on our experiment such as our wing is unbalanced and the head is too dull and the launcher
that is not 45 degree angles. Then later we rebuild the base and rocket it's flew better and
straight but we still unable to hit the target. If we have more time to shoot the rocket we think we
will be able to hit the target because our rocket if able to fly nicely.
