Embodying the Core Value of Caring
In the category of focus, | gave myself a 2. | thought | did a pretty good job at staying
focused throughout my essay. The central theme of the personal statement was the core value
of caring. For the organization category, | scored me personal statement as a 2. | gave this score
because the essay was organized in paragraphs in chronological order. However, | think | could
have done a better job transitioning between each paragraph. For the development category, |
gave myself a 2. | provided specific examples of how | exemplify caring as a core value. The
examples were stories of how | cared for others like a boy | went to school with, homeless
shelter residents, and my friend. | think the examples where adequate evidence to how |
exemplify the core value. For the audience awareness and voice category, | scored my paper a
1.1 don’t think my voice throughout the paper is clear and strong,
11am concerned that my examples are not strong enough as evidence for this personal
statement. | am concerned that my transitions throughout the statement are weak, and | am
worried that | don’t have the correct voice and tone for my audience.
From a young age, | noticed that | was constantly worried about how other people were
doing. | always wanted to make sure that everyone around me was okay. If they weren't | tied
whatever | could to make them feel better. | realized that | whole heartedly cared about the
well being of others. It was at this moment that | knew how important it was to be caring to
others and | have tried my hardest to exemplify the School of Nursing’s core value of caring.
In middle school, there was a boy named Dylan. Everyone in the class bullied Dylan, or
worse, ignored him entirely. | could feel in my heart that he was hurting and knew that | need
to be caring to him. During church one day, it came time when we were supposed to shake
hands with everyone around us. | noticed that no one would shake Dylan’s hand. | made sure to
shake his hand and give him a smile because | knew it would make him feel just alittle bit
better. As a nurse, you must be caring to all patients, even the patients that other people may
not like. Understanding the value of caring for others is necessary in being a good nurse so that
you can provide the correct care to your patient. x

NISUAL wr Yeah y MLNIn high school, | volunteered at a homeless shelter called Rebuild. At the shelter, |
helped make and serves lunches to the homeless people that visited the shelter. | could see
that each person at the shelter was down on their luck and needed to be cared for. | noticed
that many of them just needed someone to talk to or a simple caring word. So | began to
compliment each person as | gave them their lunch. It was amazing that such a simple
compliment, such as “I love your hat” or “Your hai
is beautiful,” could brightened up their
entire face. | saw the true impact that a simple caring act can have on a person, eve

mom to take care of you. My friend, Skyler, came to this harsh reality freshman year. It was
during this time that Skyler came down with the flu. She needed someone to care for her. As
her roommate and friend, | felt happy to care for her when she wasn’t feeling well. Although it
was inconvenient, | willingly walked across campus to buy her a smoothie and soup because it
was the only thing she could keep down. | cleaned up her dirty tissues and made sure she was
comfortable in bed. Later when she was healthy again, she expressed her surprise in how well | \®
