Momentum is a relationship of mass in motion. The equation
is P = mv which P is momentum, m is mass, and v is velocity. So, doubling mass and velocity results in doubled momentum. Its unit is kg * m/s and it is vector quantity. Moreover, it is also related to force which is equal to mass times acceleration.
Impulse is term that quantifies the overall effect of a force acting
over time. It is equivalent to a change in momentum. This equivalence is called The impulse-momentum theorem
The purpose of this experiment is to determine what happen
when a body which is moving with non velocity hits another body to join together and move with common velocity which can be calculated by using equation m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2 Procedure 1) Preparing the materials for experiment 2) Using a stopwatch to time the first car without mass 3) Calculate the the distance that the car can go and divided by time to find speed 4) Repeat method 2-3 again 5) Then, put two cars on the track. 6) Pushing one car to crash another 7) Finding velocity by using lab quest 8) Next, placing the mass block on the first car, the car that crashes another car 9) Pushing the first car to crash another to find velocity by using lab quest 10) Switch two cars position 11) Pushing the first car which has no mass block to crash with the second with mass 12) Using lab quest to find velocity 13) Collect data from lab quest Materials 1) 2.20 m track 4) stopwatch
2) 2 cars 5) Lab quest
3) mass block (500g.) 6) motion detector
Result and discussion Data Times Velocity w. no mass Of Velocity w. no Velocity of Object B Velocity of Object B object A By hands mass on both with mass by with mass by By Labquest Labquest Labquest
First Times D = 1.60 m T = 6. 63s V = -0.000 v = 0.018 v= 0.003
v = 0.241 meaning that it slow down
Second Times D= 1.96 m T = 3.40s
v = 0.57
Third Times D = 1.96 m T = 3.22s
v = 0.61
Average avg = 1.42
Discussion
According to Newtons second law which stated that
acceleration is inversely proportional to mass, mass increase as acceleration decrease. So the object that has mass will has less velocity than the object that has no mass because when the object increasing mass, inertia will also increase, which means that the acceleration and velocity will also decrease. From our discussion, we thought the reason that object with mass has less velocity is because the object will be heavy and has more inertia which cause the object move slowly. The momentum before and after to object crash into each other is the same. Conclusion
From our study, Law of conservation of momentum was
experimentally verified and these laws are applicable to daily life. Appendices
