What is Grab ?

Grab (formerly known as GrabTaxi) is a technology company that offers wide


range of ride-hailing and logistics services through its app in Southeast Asia,
specifically in Malaysia,
the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. As of July 2016, the
number of drivers registered in the network was over 350,000, and the Grab app
was downloaded onto more than 19 million mobile devices across Southeast
Asia.[1]
History ?
Originally established in 2012 as MyTeksi in Malaysia, GrabTaxi is a Southeast
Asia focused taxi-booking app founded by Harvard Business School graduates
Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling. [2] The idea for GrabTaxi first started when
Anthony Tan was a student at Harvard Business School and a classmate pulled
him aside to gripe about how hard it was to hail a cab in Malaysia. Tan drew up a
business plan for an Uber-like service that won backing from angel investors,
leading the youngest of three brothers to quit the family business in 2012 to
start GrabTaxi, a mobile application that assigns available cabs nearby to
commuters using mapping and location-sharing technology. [3] Tan pitched the
idea to the panel of the 2011 Harvard Business Plan Competition, that led to
them being placed second, making them the first all-Asian team to have
succeeded in many years.[4]
Localisation
GrabTaxi, or MyTeksi as it is known in Malaysia, was officially launched to the
public in June 2012.[5] The company expanded to the Philippines in August 2013,

and to Singapore and Thailand in October of the same year. [7]
In 2014, GrabTaxi further continued its growth and expansion to new countries:
first launching in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam in February, and Jakarta in
Indonesia in June.[8][9]That same year, GrabTaxi later expanded to two more cities
in the Philippines: Cebu in July, and Davao in October.[10][11] A beta version of the
app was launched in Pattaya, Thailand in September 2014.
In May 2014, the company launched GrabCar in Malaysia and Singapore. [12]

GrabCar serves as an alternative form of transportation service that uses cars
through a licensed partner in an effort to overcome the lack of supply of public
transportation during peak hours. In November 2014, GrabTaxi launched its first
GrabBike service in Ho Chi Minh City as a trial service. [14]
In February 2015, the company launched GrabCar+ (a service that provides a
fleet of higher-end cars) in the Philippines. [15] In March 2015, the company
expanded to Iloilo, making it its 4th city in the Philippines.
Funding
The initial period was tough with many sceptics. Tan started by going door-to-
door to ask the biggest taxi fleet companies to try his product. Only the fifth taxi
company he approached, operating a small fleet of 30, gave him a chance. The
company progressed and raised US$90 million in 12 months from hedge fund
Tiger Global, prominent Chinese venture capital firm GGV Capital, Vertex Venture
Holdings (subsidiary of Singapore sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings), and
more.[17] In May 2014, GrabTaxi said it had 1.2 million downloads. At around June
2013, it claimed to be doing one booking every eight seconds, or 10,000 a day, a
sixteen-fold growth within a year.[18]
By December 2014, it managed to raise US$250 million series D round, fully
invested in by SoftBank Corp which is the largest investment ever made in a
Southeast Asian internet company on public record thus far. [19] The total
investment received by the company over the last 14 months amounted to
US$340 million.[20]
On the back of the companys rapid growth, GrabTaxi opened a US$100million
Research & Development facility in the Central Business District of Singapore.

The new facility houses 200 engineers and data scientists over the next few
years. Recently joining their team includes Chief Technology Officer Wei Zhu, ex-
Facebook Engineer and creator of Facebook Connect who left the company in
Aug 2015.[22] The emphasis on software engineers and data scientists
recruitment for the new facility suggests the companys strategy in development
of new tools, possible expansion of app and service features as well as staff
management.[23] In 2016, the company will open a new engineering office center
in Seattle that will serve as a tech hub to attract talent in the United States.

The company states that it has no plans to launch in North America. [25]

There is no booking fee if you book through Grab app.

Yes, should any additional fees such as parking fee, toll, etc. are
applicable, then they are to be charged to the passengers.

What is GrabExpress?
GrabExpress is an app-based express courier service that promises
speed, certainty, and most importantly safety.
What can I deliver through GrabExpress?
GrabExpress can deliver documents or packets which do not exceed
a maximum size of 25 cm x 32 cm x 12 cm and a maximum weight
of 5 kg. GrabExpress does not accept delivery of crockery that is not
packaged properly, food and beverages that require refrigeration or
special handling, alcoholic beverages, medicines, jewelry, cash, or
other objects prohibited by the laws in force in the Republic of
Indonesia.
What is the coverage area of GrabExpress?
GrabExpress is available in JADETABEK (Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang
Selatan and kota Bekasi).
What if my delivery is not completed?
Providing the complete details of the receiver is crucial. Our bikers
will contact the receiver to ensure the receiving of the packet. If the
receiver cannot be contacted, then we will return the packet to the
sender

You can track through Share My Ride feature in the app.
If there is damage during delivery by GrabExpress, how may
I claim it?
Should any damage occurs, you may report to our customer service
by emailing to support.id@grab.com. Please provide your booking
ID and contactable phone number. All packets are covered by
insurance up to Rp. 2 mio

What is GrabHitch?
GrabHitch is a motorcycle hitch service that makes commuting
affordable while protecting the environment. GrabHitch aims to
match drivers with an empty seat in their motorcycle with
passengers going the same way.
Are there other additional costs incurred such as tolls or
surcharges (Midnight Charge, Peak Hour Charge)?
No, all costs are shown clearly beforehand. No other hidden costs
will be incurred and tolls are to be borne by the driver.
What if I want to cancel my booking?
Grabhitch is a social carpooling platform where drivers are just
regular folks like you and me, offering empty seat in their
motorcycle for their daily travels. As a common courtesy, kindly
contact the driver before cancelling your booking. Although no
cancellation fees will be incurred upon passengers, try to avoid last
minute cancellations as the driver might already be on his/her way
to pick you up.
How do I create a booking?
You can create all your bookings through the GrabHitch tab in the
Grab app. Just set your pick-up and drop-off points, schedule a trip
from 30 minutes up to 7 days in advance, select book and our
servers will ping your route request to drivers who share similar
journeys.

Youll be notified via SMS and in-app notification if a driver accepts


your booking. A reminder will be sent to you 30 minutes before your
scheduled departure time. You can book an unlimited amount of
rides a day.
