Fundamental Principle
If an event can happen in any one of n1 ways, and if when this has occurred another event can happen in any of n2 ways, then the
number of ways in which both event can happen in the specified order is n1 n2 .
Factorial n, denoted by n! is defined as
n! = n (n-1) (n-2) . 1
Permutations
A permutation of n different objects taken r at a time is an arrangement of r out of the n objects, with attention given to the order of
arrangement.
nPr = n! / (n-r)!
nPn = n!

arrangement.

Probability Theory

of the event (called its success) is denoted by:
p = PrE = h / n
The probability of nonoccurrence of the event (called its failure) is denoted by:
q = Prnot E = 1 h/n = 1 - PrE
Independent events (happening in anyone of them does not affect the happening of the others)
If E1 , E2 , E3 ,. En are n independent events having respective probability of p1 , p2 , p3 , . Pn , then the probability of
occurrence of E1 and E2 and E3 . En is p1 p2 p3 . Pn
Pr E1 E2 E3 . En = Pr E1 Pr E2 Pr E3 ..Pr En
5
Mutually exclusive events (if not more than one of them can happen in any given trial)
If E1 , E2 , E3 ,. En are n mutually exclusive events having respective probability of p1 , p2 , p3 , . Pn , then the probability of
occurrence of either E1 or E2 or E3 or . En is p1 + p2 + p3 + . Pn
Pr E1+E2 +E3+. En = Pr E1+Pr E2 +Pr E3+..Pr En
If E1+E2 denotes the event that either E1or E2 or both occurs, then
Pr E1+E2= Pr E1+Pr E2 - Pr E1 E2

it will fail to happen in any single trial (called the probability of failure), then the probability that the event will happen exactly r times
in n trials is given by:
