Block 1/A Lesson Plan

Teacher(s): Ms. Kocher Grade Level: 6th Date

Taught:
Lesson Title: Chemical Reactions Subject: Physical Science
Approximate Time Length: 55 min

KCCR Standard MS-PS1-2 Analyze and interpret data on the properties of

substances before and after the substances interact to
determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
Lesson Objective Students will be able to use properties to identify if a chemical
(Application) reaction has occurred.
Essential Question(s) Where do you see chemical reactions in your surroundings?

New & Familiar Chemical reaction, physical properties, chemical properties,

Est Lesson Activities

. Write out detailed lesson procedures. Be sure to include 4-5 important questions you will ask during the lesson and
Ti the expected student responses. Your plan should be detailed enough for another teacher to teach it without having
me to ask you any questions. Numbering and/or bullets are encouraged.

2. The teacher will ask the students to mix the skittles and M&Ms together in
one cup and ask if it is possible to separate the two candies. Students
should respond that they can be separated.

3. The teacher will ask the students if they can separate out the flour
and water from the muffin. The students will say no.

4.The teacher will ask why it is not possible and point out that a chemical
reaction must have occurred.

2.They teacher will discuss the signs that show a chemical reaction occurred.

3.The teacher will demonstrate a chemical change with paper and food
coloring and a chemical change with a candle and a jar.

4.The Teacher will break the class into groups of four to explore the four ways
to see that a chemical change has occurred.

5.The teacher will follow the lab procedure found at

6.The Students will follow each lab procedure as the teacher walks them
threw it and make observation notes in their lab notebooks. They will identify the
products and reactants as well as what signs showed that a chemical reaction occurred.

7.The students will clean their equipment and lab tables and return to their seats.
e Extend/Evaluat End

5 1.The teacher will ask the students to summarize what they have learned on
mi a sticky note. They can include things that they learned as well as any
n questions they may still have.

2.The students will stick this note the wall assigned to their class.

3. The teacher will summarize the lesson and ask the students to consider
how scientists can see that a chemical change took place by looking at only
the written chemical equation. The teacher will inform them that they will find
out in tomorrows lesson.
