MATH 20101 Complex Analysis

Problem Sheet 2

1. Using the definition, differentiate the following complex functions:

(a) f (z) = z 2 + z; (b) f (z) = 1/z (z 6= 0); (c) f (z) = z 3 z 2 .

2. In each of the following cases, find explicit formulae for u(x, y), v(x, y), where f (z) =
u(x, y) + iv(x, y), z = x + iy, and u, v, x, y are all real:
1
(a) f (z) = z + (z 6= 0); (b) f (z) = |z|; (c) f (z) = z.
z
Show that u, v satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equations everywhere in (a) and nowhere in (b),
(c).
3. Verify the Cauchy-Riemann equations for the functions u(x, y), v(x, y) given by:

(a) u(x, y) = x3 3xy 2 , v(x, y) = 3x2 y y 3 ;

(b) u(x, y) = x/(x2 + y 2 ), v(x, y) = y/(x2 + y 2 ) (x2 + y 2 6= 0).

4. Let f (z) = |xy| for z = x + iy. Show that the Cauchy-Riemann equations are satisfied
at the origin yet f 0 (0) does not exist.
5. Suppose that f (z) = u(x, y)+iv(x, y) is differentiable. Use the Cauchy-Riemann equations
to show that u and v both satisfy Laplaces equation:

2u 2u 2v 2v
+ 2 =0 and + =0
x2 y x2 y2

[You may assume the second order partial derivatives exist and are continuous. Functions
which satisfy Laplaces equation are called harmonic.]
6. For f (z) = z 3 , calculate u and v satisfying f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y) (where z = x + iy).
Verify that u and v both satisfy Laplaces equation.
7. Find the radius of convergence of the following series:

X
X
X
X
(a) z n /n; (b) z n /n!; (c) n!z n ; (d) np z n (p N).
n=1 n=1 n=1 n=1

an z n has radius of convergence R, use the formula 1/R = limn+ |an |1/n to find
P
8. If
the radius of convergence of the following power series in terms of R.

X
X
X
(a) n3 an z n ; (b) an z 3n ; (c) a3n z n .
n=0 n=0 n=0
