SEISMIC PARAMETERS
This section shows how the group arrived with the values of the seismic parameters of the structure.
This parameters were used especially in determining the design base shear of the structure. The following
acronym, desriptions, and numerical values below show the seismic parameters.

TOTAL SEISMIC WEIGHT
To determine the total seismic weight, the weight was divided into two components, which where the
total weight of the structure and the total weight of the superimposed dead loads. The total weight of
the structure is constituted of the weight from structural member such as columns, beams, and slabs,
including also the weight on walls and stairs. For the total weight of superimposed dead loads, it included the
finishes such as ceiling and floor finishes, stair finishes, and roof finishes, whose value are based on the
structural code and is enumerated in the previous sections.

TOTAL WEIGHT OF SLABS
To determine the weight of a slab, the area was multiplied to the thickness and the unit weight.

SUMMARY FOR CALCULATION OF TOTAL SEISMIC WEIGHT
56
CALCULATION OF STRUCTURE PERIOD
The method used in determining the structure period is Method A. As what was presented, the
structure is a reinforced concrete. The level height applied for the computation of the structure period was
from ground floor up to the attic floor (column height). The calculations below show the resulting structure
period.
For all buildings, the value of T (structure period) shall be approximated from the following
equation,
3
= ( ) 4
3
= ( ) 4
3
= 0.0731(6.10) 4
= 0.2837
In calculating the base shear of the structure, the static force procedure was used. Considering the
total seismic weight of the structure, the combination of parameters with most satisfactory result of base
shear was chosen. The calculations below show the resulting design base shear of the structure.
The total design base shear in a given direction shall be determined using the equation
57

and if the structure is located in Seismic Zone 4, the calculated value shall also not be less than
0.8

VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF FORCE
After determining the design base shear of the structure, the value were then distributed to every
level, so that structural analysis can be applied. The forces in each level shall be calculated as follows,

STAAD ANALYSIS
To be able to have an accurate result especially in the computer result for the total seismic weight of
the structure, the members and dead loads were drawn stated as follows:
Columns. The frame was drawn starting with the columns positioned at that places stated in the
structural plans. The frame was particular in the length and dimensions of the columns connecting each floor.
Beams. After drawing the columns, nodes in the columns were connected where appropriate beams
were situated as stated again in the structural plans. Like in the columns, the beam dimensions varied
depending whether the beam was exterior or interior.
Slabs. After drawing the members, the slabs were next to be presented by plates in the software.
Thickness was defined for the slabs. In the project, the second floor slabs and attic slabs had the same
thickness.
Walls. The walls in the frame were presented through wall pressures applied on the beam where the
walls pass their loads (self-weight). The thickness of the walls vary depending if it was an exterior or interior
wall, and so, the pressure varied depending on those two. The walls were applied in the structure through
member weights added in the seismic description.
Stairs. To be able to analyze the structure including the stairs, a plate was drawn where the stairs
were situated. Thickness for that plate was defined same as the thickness of the stair riser. In the project,
there were only two stair cases having different risers.
Ceiling and Floor Finishes. In the STAAD, these finishes were presented through floor weights whose
minimum and maximum distances were defined so that it can be applied in the desired height difference in
the structure. The floor weights were added in the seismic definitions.
Stair Finishes. To define the stair finishes, an element weight was added in the seismic definition so
that the only desired plate could experience the load placed, and in this case, they were only for the stairs.
Roof Finishes. Like in stair finishes, these loads were defined through element weight and were
mostly placed in the plates in the attic.
62
To be able to analyze the structure completely, the
appropriated properties were assigned to members. After
drawing the structure, supports where also assigned to the
structure to be able to start defining loads.
The seismic weights described in the former paragraphs were also defined in this part. The figure
below shows the used weight for the seismic analysis.

FINISHES
- Grd to 2nd Interior
- 2nd to Attic Interior STAIR FINISHES
- Attic to Roof Sidewall
ROOF FINISHES
- Grd to 2nd Exterior
- Attic to Roof Rear Wall
After doing the jobs in the description, the load cases were then defined.
The loads defined were only the seismic loads in two different directions namely
X and Z.

COMPARISON OF CALCULATED VALUES
To be able to have an accurate result for the project, analysis was done after every member were
drawn so that the seismic weight resulted by each member could be gathered. Results were tabulated so
that it could be compared for the manual computation.
The bar chart below shows the differences in the values of the components of the weight of the
structure. The walls got the largest amount of influence in the seismic weight followed by the slab. The stair
finishes though got the lowest value of weight influence.

Based on the tabulated values and bar chart, the columns and ceiling and floor finishes had the
largest amount of discrepancy, 46.675 and 47.2761 respectively. In columns, computer aided had larger
weight compared to the manual, but in ceiling and floor finishes, manual had larger eight than the computer
aided. Thus, since the discrepancies have almost equal value, these difference is somewhat neglected. Other
discrepancies of weight components already have small values and might counter each other.
After solving the total seismic weight and design base shear, the two results in each kind of analysis
were compared. To determine the percent error of the calculations, the following equation was used.
Having a margin of + 5% for errors, the result of the computations show that calculated values almost
the same with the values from the computer aided analysis and gathered a percent difference of less than
one percent in both total seismic weight (0.0474%) and design base shear (0.04075%). The percent
difference for vertical distribution of forces for second floor and attic are 3.0607% and 1.7224%, respectively.
Since all the results did not exceed the margin of error, the result of the manual computation can be concluded
as correct and can be relied upon for advanced computations such as structural analysis and design.

of calculations. In the project, there are also possible sources of errors encountered by the group. These
sources are enumerated below.
1. In computation of the weight of columns, only half of the ground floor to second floor columns
was calculated in the manual computation, unlike in STAAD where the whole height of the
structure was considered.
2. In computation of the weight of walls, the area of openings are considered in the manual
computation, unlike in the computer-aided computation where the walls are considered intact.
Also, the length of walls were not clearly drawn into the structural members in the computer
aided computation.
3. In computation of the ceiling and floor finishes, the two way slab distribution was applied in the
manual computation, but STAAD doesnt seem to have the same because the values obtained
were far from each other.
4. In computation of the roof finishes, it was calculated as inclined in the manual unlike in STAAD
where the pressure was placed horizontally to the attic slabs.
