The patient is a 72 year old retired Engineer. He recently had a


prostatectomy (7 days ago).
His indwelling catheter is fine. Patients vital signs are fine. However,
patient is depressed / embarrassed about the catheter.
Explain why he needs the catheter in for a few more days
Ask the patient to come back in 3 days time for another review and
possible removal of the catheter

2. SPEAKING NURSES - Community Care


Centre
Your patient is a 34 y.o. male (or female).
Obviously overweight
Has been getting a lot of pain in upper right quadrant of abdomen

TASKS

Get a medical history


Ask patient about their eating and drinking habits and exercise regime
Take the patients vital signs including his/her weight BMI=32
You suspect fatty liver disease.

Explain to the patient what he/she should do to relieve the pain


How can the patient improve his/her fatty liver condition (lose
weight / give up or reduce alcohol drinking)
Suggest a diet plan
Suggest he/she attends at Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig classes
Ask patient to wait for 10 minutes then see one of the clinic
doctors to get a prescription for painkillers
Ask the patient to come back in two weeks for a review
Suggest the patient get ongoing monitoring (maybe see you on a
regular basis for a fortnightly weigh-in ?)
3. SPEAKING NURSES - Outpatients Department
Major Hospital

A parent comes into the Outpatients Department anxious to see someone


who can help her.
Parent is accompanied by 5 year old child.
Child is coughing and wheezing.
Find out about the childs home life living conditions eating habits
Any carpets or rugs in the home?
Suggest ways to cope with his/her allergy
Perhaps the family should find another home for the pet
