A. Overview
B. Characteristics of Metabolic Pathways
C. Control of Metabolic Pathways

II. Questions to Ask when Studying Metabolism

For Monday, March 13:

Chapter 12: Carbohydrate metabolism
Pages 369-380 and 383-384
Housekeeping Items:
Please email me (bamek@umkc.edu) if you would like to meet
with me outside of class. My office is 417 BSB.

Abbreviated lecture slides will be available before class, so you

can use them to take notes with. I will post scanned lecture
slides after each class. You will find these items on the Course
Blackboard site.

Access to the Panopto recordings will be on the Course

Moodle site.

3 to 4-point Mastering Chemistry homework is due by 8:00 AM

before every lecture. The next homework assignment becomes
available at 10:00 AM after that days lecture. Access to the
Mastering Chemistry homework is through the Course Moodle
site.

Up to 2 poll questions during each lecture, and they may be

asked at any time during the lecture.

There is always the possibility of unannounced quizzes over

the next 11 lectures. They may be given at the beginning, the
middle or the end of the lecture. There will be NO MAKE-UP
quizzes if you are not in class for the quiz, then you will not
earn quiz points.

Questions to ask when studying metabolic pathways

1. What is the overall goal or purpose of the pathway?

2. Is it an anabolic or catabolic pathway? What does this mean

in terms of energy? Is ATP used or produced? Is NADH
used or produced?

3. Where does the pathway occur inside the cell? Where does
the pathway occur in the body?

4. What are the principal substrates and products of the

pathway? Are there other possible substrates?

5. Do intermediates of the pathway participate in other

pathways?

6. What types of reactions occur in the pathway?

7. What steps in the pathway are regulated? How are they

regulated?

8. Under what conditions in the cell/organ/body will the

pathway be turned on or off?
