Ethics and Sustainability

Mode of delivery
Lectures/Consultations/Presentations
Dates will be confirmed in class.
Directed reading and individual research outside of class hours
Assessment Structure (25 marks)
1. The assessment is through a group assignment (15 Marks) and
2. an individual Class Quiz (10 Marks).

Objective: undertake research in sustainability / Ethics with application case studies in a

selected engineering topic
Due dates can be found on the assignment sheet and will be confirmed in class
Final Mark depends on the Peer Evaluation (see next slide, and to be explained in class)
Ethics and Sustainability
Peer Evaluation for all assignments and presentations
If you have concerns about the performance of any team member, you should email Dr Michel Chaaya
on the following address:
Michel.chaaya@sydney.edu.au

The peer evaluation email is due at 5:00pm on the 27th May 2016 (after 2 days of the assignment
submission) by an email sent to michel.chaaya@sydney.edu.au

You need to state a percentage of contribution of the relevant team member and his/her mark will be
adjusted taking into effect the average of all percentages submitted. For example, if I receive an email
from 7 students (for a team of 8 students) giving a percentage of contribution of 50% for the 8th
students, the 8th student mark for the assignment will be multiplied by 50%.

Note that you do not have to submit a peer evaluation if you are rating your team members 100%. So if
I do not receive any emails from any team members, I would assume that all team members are happy
with the contribution of all. The mark will not be changed.

The lecturer will elaborate more on the peer evaluation in class.

Ethics and Sustainability
Course outline Week 1
Students will be introduced to Basic Fundamentals and theories of ethics and
sustainability practices in engineering. Students will form groups to undertake the
assignment.

Ethics and Sustainability Assignment

Group Assignment (managed by all team members)

Each team member should find 2 case studies (one on sustainability and one on ethics) and
comprehensively highlight the aspects of both with in-depth analyses. It is preferable that the
case studies are related to their field of Engineering/profession. (15 Marks)
Each team member to produce max 3 pages for each case study and the whole team will be in
charge of compiling and submitting one MS Word document. Hence, the team report will be
submitted electronically only as a Word Document file (font 12, 1.5 spacing). Each team
member is responsible equally for the compilation of the whole submission (One submission
only by team).
The Due Date for the assignment is 4:00pm in class on the 25th May 2016 (by an email sent
to michel.chaaya@sydney.edu.au). No hard copy is needed.
The mark of every team member will depend on the peer evaluation (if any) which will be
explained in class (peer evaluation is due at 5:00pm after 2 days of the submission on the
27th May 2016 by an email sent to michel.chaaya@sydney.edu.au)
Note that you do not have to submit a peer evaluation if you are rating your team members
100%. So if I do not receive any emails from any team members, I would assume that all
team members are happy with the contribution of all. The mark will not be changed.
