Dear Parents,
We are very excited about the upcoming STEM EXPO, which will be held on
March 18, 2014. As we did last year, this year we will continue with our expanded
Science Expo to a STEM Expo that includes Technology, Engineering, and Math, in
addition to Science. This will enable students to select a project that targets their
individual interests.
Each student will select between the following types of projects: constructing a
Rube Goldberg machine, creating an original Invention, developing a plan for an
Environmental Innovation, investigating how something works through Reverse
Engineering, Engineering a Robot to perform a specific task, or further exploring
science through a typical Scientific Inquiry project. Students will be doing most of the
pieces of their projects at home and some pieces at school. This is a valuable learning
experience to foster scientific awareness, curiosity, creativity, effective research
techniques and time management skills.
There will be bi-weekly check-ins during science class to make sure each
students project is on track and observations are being recorded in his/her project
notebook. Below, you will find a rough outline of due dates for project parts. Each
student will receive a detailed due date list specific to their type of project in early
November. Ive asked each student to discuss their ideas for their projects with parents
and to get signed approval taking into consideration the timeline, materials needed,
cost, and supervision.
Part 4 of project due (Data analysis and February 13th (7th grade)
conclusions, project improvements, etc) February 14th (6th and 8th grade)
