Donald, W. (1911). Can the Republican Party Reform? The North American Review, 194(673),
This artifact is about the late 1800s and early 1900s and how the Republican party needed
to change in order to keep up with the Dixiecrats and the new Northern liberals that started to
join the Democrat party. It discusses the first issues the Republican party faced, which is
interesting because it a similar situation happens again in the mid-1900s when Democrats are
dominating American politics.
http://factmyth.com/factoids/democrats-and-republicans-switched-platforms/
This website focused on the presidential elections and how they impacted the two parties.
It mainly went over how the two parties flipped sides throughout history. This website shows
the transition of the parties and how elections affect the parties. This artifact is starting to make
me change my overall question of just the change of the two parties to focus more on the
presidents and how the influenced their respected parties.
Democratic Platform Committee. (2016, July 8-9). 2016 Democratic Party Platform. Retrieved
from https://www.democrats.org/party-platform
This is the entire platform for the Democratic Party, which was made in Orlando, Florida,
2016. The current platforms the beginning of to start my capstone. Seeing their current views
on social, economic and foreign issues readers will be able to see which issues the Democratic
Party's thinks are the most important and their views on these issues. The Democratic Party is
primarily focused on social issues, civil rights, legalizing marijuana, etc. It will be interesting
going back in history and see how important these issues were to them 10, 20, 50, or even 100
years ago.
Dunning, W. (1910). The Second Birth of the Republican Party. The American Historical
This artifact was very helpful, as it was about the early 1900s and this helped concrete
what was going on in the Republican party during this time period. They were struggling with
changes after the Lincoln era and had to take a different approach.

This website had a different approach than the last artifact. Instead of talking about how
FDR changed the party this artifact talks about why he wanted to change the party. This artifact
was very helpful in understanding FDR and the democratic party as a whole. This artifact
helped show how the parties changed during the FDR era.
Gormley, K. (Ed.). (2016). The Presidents and the Constitution: A Living History. NYU Press.
This was a really great article. It gave a brief summary of all the presidents so I will be
able to see how the presidents changed overtime. This is helps see what each president did and
then have myself discover the changes in the political parties. Based on historical events the
parties have changed based on how the presidents decided to handle the conflicts they faced and
if they were successful or unsuccessful.
This artifact was useful because it shows all the maps from each presidential election. It
is an easy way to see how the geographic regions have changed throughout history. Having this
as a resource is very helpful when it comes to trying to see how the voters have evolved
throughout history.
This is the entire platform for the Republican Party, which was made during latest
convention in Cleveland, Ohio, 2016. The current platforms from the last election. Seeing their
current views on social, economic and foreign issues it will be interesting to see which issues the
Republican Party's thinks are the most important and their views on these issues. Comparing
their past views and platforms will be interesting; seeing the transition they have gone through
over the last one hundred and fifty years. One of the main takeaways from the platform is trying
to change healthcare.

The New Deal Democrats: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Democratic Party. (n.d.).

Reform/19_TheNewDealDemocrats.pdf
This article helped me understand how FDR changed the Democratic party. His
"New Deal" was a new economic policy that helped create a division between the two
parties in economic platforms. The new economic policy helped him gain lots of support
for the next election and beyond which is why he won 4 elections.
Why Did the Democratic and Republican Parties Switch Platforms?. (2012, September 24).
platforms.html
This website was focused on how the parties changed due to Lincoln's and
Roosevelt's presidency. One can see the boom in the time period of 1860-1936 in
American politics. In those 150 years the presidency has changed a lot, with power and
publicity. This website does a good job at showing the changes in the parties platforms,
geography, and ethnics.
