Scarf or piece of fabric
III. INTRODUCTION
Cover basket of instruments with a scarf or other fabric before bringing to circle

time to avoid distractions.

I brought with me something special to circle time today. I wonder what it might

be. (Remove scarf) Instruments! I brought with me different types of instruments

for us to explore and to make music with.

IV. PROCEDURE (Body of Lesson)

We are going to listen to a song called Play Your Instruments and Make a Pretty

Sound. The woman in the song will tell us about our different instruments and

ways we can play them.

Lets put our listening ears on so we can hear the directions of the song. Everyone

take an instrument so we can play along! (Shy children may want to just listen at

first. They will not be forced to participate but will be offered opportunities to join

throughout the song if they choose to.)

Play the song and model the correct way to play several types of the instruments. As

specific instruments are mentioned in the song, point out which children are using

those instruments by saying Child A is using (rhythm sticks)!

Call attention to the change in dynamics by saying The song is playing softly and

by playing your instrument quietly.

At the end of the song, say Wow! Each of the instruments made different sounds!

We all made pretty sounds when we played our instruments together.

All of these instruments will be in the music corner by the blocks. We can play with

them and listen to the sounds each ones make whenever we are playing inside!

V. EVALUATION

I will know the objectives have been met by observing how the children respond to

the songs directions and if they are attentive to the instrument(s) they are playing.

VI. FOLLOW-UP

Place the classroom instruments back in the music corner and encourage children to

explore the different sounds each instrument makes. Depending on the interests of the

children, the song may be song multiple times in large or small groups.

VII. CRITICAL SELF-REFLECTION

This lesson went very well. The children really enjoyed the song and the opportunity to

use the instruments. One student was nodding her head with the rhythm of the song. When

introducing the lesson, make more use of the instruments under the scarf. Next time, have

students guess what might be underneath they could feel it, smell it, listen to it when I shake

the basket, etc.
