IndianEngineeringServicesabbreviatedasIESarethecivilservicesthatmeetthetechnicalandmanagerialfunctionsoftheGovernmentofIndia.Likemost
countries,theGovernmentofIndiarecruitsitscivilservantsandofficialsonthebasisofmerit,themiddlemanagementpositionsinthebureaucracyarefilledthrough
competitiveexams.Largenumberofcandidatestaketheseexams,competingforlimitedposts.IESofficersareselectedbytheuniongovernmentonthe
recommendationsmadebytheUnionPublicServiceCommission(UPSC).Acombinedthreestagecompetitiveexamination(comprisingfivetests),calledthe
EngineeringServicesExamination(ESE)isconductedbytheUPSCforrecruitmenttotheIndianEngineeringServices.[1]

IESremainthemostsoughtaftercareersfortheengineeringgraduatesinIndia.[2][3][4]In2015,atotalof434candidateswererecommendedthroughESEwithleast
selectionratioever.Intheyear2010,atotalof157,649candidatesappliedfor434vacancies(includesallbranchesandcadres).[5][6]In2011,atotalnumberof693
candidateswererecommendedforappointmentsinthesefourlistsinclude317General,209OtherBackwardClasses,113ScheduledCastesand54ScheduledTribes
(including44candidatesbelongingtoPhysicallyHandicappedcategory).[7]ESE2012wasconductedfortherecruitmentofcandidatestoasmanyas560posts,which
alsoincludes47vacanciesavailableonlyforthePH(physicallyhandicapped)category.[8]ESE2013wasconductedfortherecruitmentofcandidatestoasmanyas763
posts,whichalsoincludes19vacanciesavailableonlyforthePH(physicallyhandicapped)category.[9]

ESEisthereforeconsideredasthetoughestexaminIndiaandamongstthetoughestintheworldduetolessnumberofpostshavingaselectionratioof0.00275(based
on2010statistics)anditstechnicalnature.MosttoppersofthisexamaregraduatesofinstitutesliketheIndianInstitutesofTechnology[10][11]andIndianInstituteof
Science.[12]Becauseofthisdifficultselectionprocedure,IESofficerscarryhighrespectandstatusinsocietyandareabletomanageactivitiesindiverseareas.
Governmentspendingcomprisesmorethan15percentofIndia'sGDPandgiventheextentoftasksandfunctionsmanagedbythepublicsector,thisextendstoafairly
broadsegmentoftheeconomycoveringtherailways,roads,defense,manufacturing,inspection,supply,construction,publicworks,power,telecommunications,
