Extended Newsletter

In 5th Grade

Reading:/Social Studies/ Writing: Students are currently working on their Civil War
research project. This project will incorporate researching many different
components and perspectives of the war. We will be working on developing our
skills as a nonfiction researcher and writer as well as a historical fiction writing. We
have been and will continue spending one day to research each subsection and
then one day creating a rough draft. Our final product will be creating a website to
show understanding of the topic. Please see information on the second page of
this newsletter for information regarding the sources we will be using and how your
child will be protected. For their weekly 30 minutes a night of reading, students
may choose to work on the project rather than reading a choice book.
Math: Students finished their study of Order of Operations and have started looking
at Geometry. This unit will take us to the end of the quarter. Geometry is very
vocabulary intense, so a Quizlet and vocabulary words will be posted on the
Weebly.
Science Students are completing their unit on ecosystems. They have created
fabulous Google Slide presentations on different biomes. Make sure they show
you their project! Also, students are looking at populations in a biome and what
can happen if just one animal is taken out of that biome and how it can change the
entire dynamics of the system.

Civil War Research Project- Creating a Weebly Permission

Dear Parent(s),
Our class would like to use student.weebly.com, an online
learning tool that students will use to create a Civil War
website. Before using this tool, we will need your parental
consent because our students are children under the age of
13.
In order for students to use this program/service, they will
obtain a private account through a teachers weebly. The
website they create can only be accessed with a pass code.
No personal information is associate with their individual
account as it is linked to their educators account.
Please take a moment to look at the website we will be
using: https://education.weebly.com/ed-features.php .

After reviewing this site, if you would NOT like your child to
have their own Weebly account under a teachers account,
please contact me in writing, through email or
letter, before March 23, 2017. If I do not hear from you
otherwise, we will create a Weebly account for your
student on March 24, 2017.

Sincerely,
5th grade Literacy Teachers
