Activity: Workbook

Goals/Key questions
What factors led to BC, PEI, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland to become
provinces of Canada,
and what were the consequences?
What factors led to BC joining Confederation?
This lesson will meet the overall goal by: recapping the last chapter and
handing back some assignments ad connecting the project sell the west
perspective with the historical perspective of the new chapter. Then
introducing them to Chapter 10, the chapter inquiry question, and the
question to keep in mind today and read the first section (pages 216/217)
and discuss historical perspective. Asking the students why did Canada want
to connect coast to coast and have a route to BC? Then read the next
sections (pages 219/220 maybe 221) and discuss. Let them work in the
books and then introduce them to their next project A Confederation
Timeline.

Objective (connected to PofS): To understand how the country developed and


to appreciate the efforts that were made by the founders,
settlers, and First Nations during Confederation.

General Outcome: 7.2 Following Confederation: Canadian Expansions


Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how
political, demographic, economic, and social changes that have occurred
since Confederation have presented challenges and opportunities for
individuals and communities.
Specific Outcome(s):
7.2.1 - recognize the positive and negative aspects of immigration and
migration
7.2.2 - recognize the positive and negative consequences of political
decisions
7.2.3 - appreciate the challenges that individuals and communities face when
confronted with rapid change
7.2.5 - evaluate the impact of Confederation and of subsequent immigration
on Canada from 1867 to the First World War by exploring issues and
questions such as:

Content:

Connect Sell the West
perspective to historical
perspective
Ask them which province
came next in
Confederation? Why did
Canada want to connect
with BC so badly? And
what did it do in order to
convince BC to join?
Show them on the
Railways and Immigration
map
Introduce them to new
Chapter inquiry question
and what question we will
be focusing on for the first
two lessons.
Read pages 216 and 217
and discuss historical
perspective and time and
change
Tell them about their new
project that is a
Confederation Timeline
and they will get more info
at the end of class or
maybe tomorrow
Read pages 219 and 220
(maybe A New Beginning
on 221 depending on time)
and discuss.
Hand out new workbooks
Transition Tell them to do the Starting their new
considerations sections in the workbook workbooks
that we covered in the
