Definition for multi-turn actuators

according to EN ISO 5210
A multi-turn actuator is an actuator
which transmits to the valve a torque
for at least one full revolution. It is
capable of withstanding thrust.

Tandem switches (option) For switching two different potentials. The switches have two compartments with 2 NC and 2 NO contacts
galvanically isolated switches in a common sealed housing. The two switches are (2 NC und 2 NO)

Absolute travel measuring

without battery
The valve position is determined
using a so called multi-turn-absolute
encoder.
Four shafts, each with a ratio of 8:1,
are used to convert the travel into an
electronic signal. Each valve
position is assigned an unambigu-
ous combination of the 4 shaft posi-
tions. Magnets and hall sensors
register the shaft positions electroni-
cally.
As soon as the power supply has
been restored after a power failure,

due to manual operation during swit-
ched off power are registered by the
MWG even without supply voltage. A
battery is not required.

Torque continuously available

The proven sliding worm stands for
the mechanical principle of torque
sensing. A torque at the output drive
results in an axial movement of the
sliding worm against the spring
action. With a lever, the axial move-
ment is transformed into a swivel
movement. Hall sensors convert this
movement into an electronic signal.

Design principle
Motor
1 An especially high starting torque is
frequently required to unseat valves
from the end position. The motors developed
by AUMA fulfil this basic requirement.
Besides the commonly used 3-phase AC
motors, 1-phase AC motors and DC motors
are available for the actuator sizes up to 14.5
or 16.1 respectively. The sizes SA 07.1 up to
SA 10.1 are available with variable speed
Control unit motor.
2 Depending on the type of valve the The motor is connected via an internal plug/
actuator must be switched off in the socket connector (up to 16 A nominal cur-

motor, e.g. for change of output speed.
For this purpose two independent measuring
systems (limit switching and torque Further information on page 18.
switching) are provided within the control
unit. They measure the travel or the torque
demanded at the output drive, respectively.
6
The switches signalize to the actuator con-
trols that the set tripping points have been
reached, which then switches off the motor.
The control unit may optionally be equipped
with a magnetic limit and torque transmitter.
The transmitter converts the mechanical
parameters limit and torque into continuous 1
electronic signals. In combination with the
integral controls AUMATIC tripping points
and tripping torques can be set non-intru-
sively, i.e. without using tools or opening the
control unit.

2
Gearing
3 The well proven principle of worm
gearing, sometimes combined with a
planetary gear, is used to reduce the motor
speed to the required actuator output speed.
Self-locking (refer to page 12) is achieved by
the worm gearing. Worm shaft and output
shaft with the worm wheel run in ample sized
bearings.
The sliding worm is positioned between two
stacks of springs on the worm shaft. The
worm will be moved in relation to the torque.
This axial displacement, as a measure for
the torque, is transmitted to the control unit
via lever and gear wheels.
The gear housing is filled with lubricant. This
results is maintenance free service for a long
period of time.

16
Design principle
Electrical connection
6 The connection for motor and con-
trols up to size 16.1 are made on a
50-pole AUMA plug/ socket connector. On
larger sizes, the motor is connected to termi-
nals in the actuator.
If the plug/ socket is disconnected for mainte-
nance work, the wiring remains undisturbed.
The explosion-proof actuator types SAExC
and SARExC are provided with a special
plug/ socket connector for explosion-proof
actuators as a standard.
Further information on page 24.

Manual operation
5 For commissioning or in an emer-
gency the multi-turn actuator can be
operated with the handwheel. By operating
the red change-over lever the motor drive is
disconnected and the manual drive
engaged. Since disconnection between
motor and drive shaft is made before the
self-locking worm/ worm wheel, easy
change over to manual drive is possible even
5 if the actuator has been operated at full rated
torque.
When starting the motor the manual drive is
automatically disengaged. During electric
operation the handwheel does not rotate.

Valve attachment
4 The mounting flange is according to
EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210.
Various output drive types are available.
Therefore it is possible to adapt to different
types of valves.
