Dear School Counseling Department,

I am seeking a full-time school counselor position within a reputable
school district. Unlike other candidates, I have experience working with
students outside of the classroom and beyond learning. After coaching in
various environments with different age groups and working towards
completing my practicum and internship hours, my strong desire to help
young people with their academic, social/emotional, and post-secondary
needs coupled with what I have learned from working in the Admissions
Office at Lebanon Valley College and coaching makes me a strong candidate
as a school counselor.
I am a graduate from Lebanon Valley College (LVC) where I majored in
Business Administration. I was also a three-year captain of the womens
lacrosse team. When I was recruited to play, LVCs womens lacrosse had just
finished its first season. As a result, a big factor in my choice to attend the
College was recognizing the value and rarity of joining a new program; I truly
believed it would allow me to be an active part in shaping a quality program.
Looking back, I am proud to have worked with coaches and fellow athletes to
build a successful program with plenty of potential for the future. Being a
captain allowed me to connect with teammates on a different level than just
a normal teammate. This honor made it easy for them to come to me for
help, whether it involved a personal, social, school, or family related issues.
On top of that, I worked in the admissions office at LVC giving tours of the
campus and assisting with open house events giving me the opportunity to
talk to interested students about not only the school, but the admissions
process as well. More recently, I have been given the opportunity to
represent LVC at various college fairs on Long Island where I speak to
prospective students about the wonderful opportunities available at LVC.
After graduating college, I accepted a sales representative position at
Arrow Electronics. While working there for 11 months, I did a lot of soul
searching realizing I needed a career in which I help people and have an
impact on others lives. I took a step in that direction by coaching the JV
Girls Basketball team at Kennedy High School, coaching two 7 th grade
basketball teams, and then becoming the assistant womens lacrosse coach
at Farmingdale State College as well as obtaining and continuing to obtain
several other coaching positions. Being a coach allows me to have a positive
influence on the children and young adults I am coaching and allows them to
be mentored by someone other than their parents, teachers and friends
while pushing them and teaching them skills to become the best student-
athlete they can be. I thrive and feel fulfilled when I help others and see
them happy and successful.
Currently, I am enrolled in the Master of Science in School Counseling
program at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and will be graduating in
May 2017. During the two years of the program, I have been exposed to
several courses that have educated me in numerous topics surrounding
school counseling. These courses include, but are not limited to, Foundations
of Counseling, Group Counseling, Career Counseling and Lifestyle

Development, Consultation, Education Law, Policy and Ethics, Counseling and

Cultural Competence in a Global Society, Post Secondary Transitions and
College Counseling, and Research. Currently I am enrolled in Social Justice,
School Counseling Programs: Development, Implementation and Evaluation,
and Internship II. All of the classes listed have equipped me with skills and
knowledge while increasing my confidence towards becoming a successful
school counselor in the near future.
During both practicum (100+ hours) and internship I (300+ hours),
Grace Pariti at Valley Stream North High School (VSN) has supervised me.
Working with primarily seventh through ninth grade students has given me
practical experience, allowing me to put what I have learned in class, into
action. I have learned the ins and outs of how VSN implements a successful
school counseling program, specifically using communication and
collaboration skills between the counselors, psychologists, social worker,
administrators, teachers, parents, and students. Additionally, I have been
given the opportunity to develop and present lessons, which are directly tied
to VSNs core values, for the Self-Contained seventh grade students that
involve data collection to track the success of the program. Furthermore, I
am a co-facilitator of the Beautiful Me program that is presented to the
seventh and twelfth grade girls.
I am currently completing my second internship (300+ hours) within
Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District under the supervision of Adam
Nislow (Grand Avenue Middle School) and Matt Grasso (John F. Kennedy High
School). I am quickly learning how they use similar methods in order to have
a successful and comprehensive school-counseling program.
At Grand Avenue, I have had the opportunity to quickly input new ideas
to help streamline processes for programing/ scheduling, Committee on
Special Education reviews (Annual and Initial), and one on one academic/
social/ emotional meetings with struggling students. Additionally, I have
experience co-facilitating a Social Skills group that includes boys in 7 th and
8th grades. At Kennedy, I have attended the District College Planning Night
and the Guidance Program for 11 th grade parents, as well as, experienced
Junior Post Secondary Education meetings.
Additionally, my course work while at NYIT and LVC has made me
proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly being considered an advanced user
of both Excel and PowerPoint. Having to give several professional
presentations, as well as, complete difficult papers allowed both my verbal
and written communication skills to excel and prepare me to thrive in a
professional environment. Moreover, my experience with Zoom, Jing, Google
Forms, Google Drive and other Google services allows me to use technology
when working with students, teachers, administrators and other school
personnel. Being at both Valley Stream North and Bellmore- Merrick CHSD
has given me exposure to E-School and Infinite Campus respectively.
Finally, my athletic and academic careers have also given me the skill
set to work as a team player in a fast paced environment. Being a career
athlete has instilled in me that working with my team while being individually

driven will result in a positive outcome the majority of the time. In addition,
playing sports taught me to think on my feet and multitask. Having said that,
I have the leadership ability, communication and people skills needed in a
school counselor.
I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss the
opportunity to fill the school counselor position open within your school
district. Thank you for your time and consideration; I hope to hear from you
soon!

Sincerely,
Taylor Kruter
